    I am a 70 woman. I have been strength training since my twenties, off and on, but I got more serious in my sixties and I go to the gym regularly now at 70. Will, you are so correct about every thing you have said. I see so many of my friends settling in at this age and not doing anything. It’s like they give up! It’s the worst thing you can do!! I also do a rebounder workout for 20 to 30 minutes and day besides walking my dog. My husband who is 75 has gotten on board with the weight training and he is hooked now. Even though he walks everyday the gym membership has helped him to gain strength that he can feel walking up those hills, he is amazed at how better he is at everything he does. No weaklings in this house!! I know if we keep to this regime we can go into our 80’s with strength and good health!!! You are never too old to start, just start slow and I feel Will’s advice is spot on!!!!

    A gym membership is expensive, BUT it's more expensive to have to purchase a wheelchair, front-wheeled walker, orthotics, etc., pay for high-priced gasoline to drive to the doctor's office, pay for what the medical insurance doesn't cover, and pay for prescriptions...the costs of medications in the U.S. are extremely exorbitant and the medications produce numerous side effects. Nursing homes are also extremely expensive if you want to be cared for properly, otherwise, a lot of nursing homes in the U.S. take your money, ignore you, leave you in bed to develop bed sores and take forever to change your diaper.

      There is no need to deteriorate to the extent that you describe. If you watch your diet - and it seems many in the U.S. don’t, and you exercise regularly with country walking, leaving the car on the drive for places you can reach on foot and not using the lift if possible, also strengthening exercises where you are weak, then you can keep well unless you get a specific illness which attacks you. It is a lot easier in Britain of course as we have free access to all parts of the countryside including private land where we have permission to hike what are called ‘rights of way’. Within minutes of where I live we have hundreds of square miles of open countryside and hills where anyone is free to roam. Of course that is not the case for everyone, particularly for those who live in mega-cities and in vast countries where it would require travelling distances to reach national parks etc.
      We are particularly blessed in Britain by living in a truly free country! I am over 75, can easily walk 12 miles or more, climb hills and even mountains but I don’t go to the gym. (P.S In Britain Seniors get free prescriptions).

      And it’s funny how people who don’t have money for the gym somehow manage to find the money for cable subscriptions and take-out meals.

      There are many gyms that have a low subscription and no contract. Or there are so many free videos on yt ,all you need to do is buy a couple of dumbells. There is no excuse

      High end gyms are expensive, Im sure there are inexpensive gyms with no fancy machine equipments

    As soon as I retired, doctors, my friends and everyone I came in contact with mentioned my age. I'm writing from Paris suburb. Everyone encourages me to stay home, stop moving.

    I'm 50 and next week going on a solo backpacking trip through the BC wilderness across mountain ranges and glaciers. I feel as good as when i was 20.

I get a lot out of your videos, and I enjoy receiving your 3 tip Friday emails. You seem very aware of what it's like for over 50s, even though you're younger. How did you gain this perspective?       Hi there - I'm so pleased to hear you've found my videos useful and that you've enjoyed my mail outs. I've worked in my profession for over 10 years now and I've seen the damaging effects of bad advise and, on the opposite end, the amazing results of great advice and action. Our bodies and minds need stimulation to keep them healthy. The more we can do to protect ourselves, the better it is for preventing injury and poor health!

    The one exception was when my wife developed MS 26 years ago. She was unable to ambulate for the last 15 years. I still have a room full of equipment we used...hoist, wheelchair, powerdrive etc. We even built a specially designed disabled home for her. I live here alone now. BUT.....I am 77 and walk about 12,000 steps a day and I am determined to stay healthy and fit for as long as I can. I live in Australia.

    I started weight lifting when I was diagnosed with high osteopenia. One of my medications has osteoporosis as a side effect. My doctor recommended osteoporosis medication but I wanted to see what I could do naturally. So I started lifting challenging weights. Fast forward one year and when tested again, my doc thought he had the results back to front. After about now 5 years, one reading is now normal and the other is slight osteopenia. I am 56 years old. I am not on any osteoporosis medication.

    Most Family Doctors have spent very little time studying nutrition and exercise so they would be the last person I'd ask for advice in this area.

      "ask your doctor" is not for a detailed nutritional plan but to check if you have any underlying medial issues that's worth knowing before profoundly changing your activity level .

    You are so right about the gym!! I went for several years, and then a neck problem caused me to stop. I notice my balance is off, carrying groceries in is harder and just the way I feel has gone down.
    As far as worrying about others in the gym, first they're there for themselves, they don't care what you're doing. Many are very nice and last, who cares anyway! You're there to get and feel better! Time is short, don't worry what others are thinking! Go! You'll feel better!!

      I'm sorry to hear about your neck injury! You're absolutely right, everyone is feeling the same way at the gym, and they're focused on what they're doing. For the most part, everyone is there to work on themselves, so they're not there to judge anyone else, and even if they are, more fool them!

    Am 84 and go the gym 4x week for 75 mins. per....have had knees and hips replaced...NO DOCTOR RECOMMENDED PT or EXERCISE.
    Good read beside Will's book is EXERCSE IS MEDICINE by Judy Foreman. (Tuscon AZ)

      I hear ya. When I got a new PCP, I explicitly stated that I was most interested in extending my healthspan and was willing to do what it took - they didn't ask about my diet (except to ask about alcohol and tobacco) or exercise. They adjusted my bp meds and sent me on my way, without really addressing other possibilities. I have to do my own research which is not necessarily a formula for success - but at least Dr Will seems like a good source of information

    Thank you, Will. Great advice. When I fell - hard!- on right knee in 2000, I could barely hobble around my house using furniture, walls, etc. When I finally was able to get appt with orthopedic surgeon for assessment, he said I needed knee replacement but he wouldn’t do it due to my age; I was 78. When asked what my options were he said - and this is direct quote!- “learn to live with it”. I never knew a doctor could be so mean and cruel. Enter Will Harlow: thanks to you. I am more mobile now, I can even walk without my cane. Sometimes, I never use my walker anymore, except to get in and out of the shower. I still have a lot of pain, but with the leg strengthening exercises, you’ve suggested I expect that to Start decreasing. Thank you so very much for helping me to help myself to improve the quality of my life.

      @@samanthathompson9812 the recent leg strengthening exercises Will has taught have helped me be stronger and more mobile. The earlier exercises on balance are what I started with. Personal daily commitment to do these are when real improvements began. I take Sunday off. Best wishes to you. Oh… I also bought and am reading Will’s book. It’s wonderful and inspires me to keep trying.

      I hate the gym. I hate the clothes,the smells,the sounds,the sweat,the atmosphere,being with a load of people exercising. Especially the noise.

    The problem with gyms is this: We older people know our bodies--as they were--and how they are. If you tell a trainer to "take it slow" they don't really understand that you REALLY HAVE TO START STUPID SLOW! They end up injuring you and--worse than that--it is not a good experience or certainly not enjoyable. I was an athlete, now old. I always enjoyed working out. Trainers have to learn patience!!!! It's ok. We don't have to lift a lot!!

      I had the same experience with personal trainers. These young trainers don’t understand our limitations and you end up hurting so bad that you don’t want to continue. Most gyms don’t have someone trained in helping seniors.
      I go to the gym but don’t use a trainer. I used to hate it because I felt I was wandering aimlessly around the machines. Then I found an app (Hevy) that allows you to create your own routines based on the machines in your gym. I have a legs routine, arms, routine and core routine. It tells me what to do next and remembers how much weight I used last time. It’s made a huge difference. It even connects with my Apple watch so I don’t have to keep my phone out.

      @@anitawallace2166 There are more of us than them. A huge market that is untapped in fitness is mature fitness and rehab. For example, lots of people have knee replacements, but PT is limited. One has to get FULL range of motion back or walking will be altered forever. Those kinds of things don't have to be done by PTherapists. A responsible gym program would be so helpful. We don't need to run for 45 minutes on a treadmill, a good 20 on, 20 off, 20 on is good enough! And power-walking isn't important--it's the time you spend MOVING that helps us age well.     Muscle is the organ of longevity, 57 , can dead hang for two minutes, have more muscle mass than guys in their 20’s ( drug users excluded) . I train 5 days a week, 45 minutes a session, I stick to to the 15 -30 rep range so I’m not lifting heavy but instigate hypertrophy. I eat a ton of meat ( no shakes) and then everything else only after I reach 1g per pound of body weight. Each year my blood results are all in the healthy range, despite by dinosaur of a doctor telling me I’m wrong ( he is frail) about my diet. Number one rule , DONT get injured! Leave ego at the door and come back fighting the next day…. Make yourself hard to kill.

      Absolutely. Don’t get injured is a biggie. Warm up, cool down and leave your ego behind. As you get older, injuries take longer to recover from, sometimes a lot longer, which leads to extended periods of recuperation, which disrupts training, which often makes people train harder when they come back to catch up, which often causes injuries etc etc. Remember why you are exercising in the first place.

    My daughter and I go to Planet Fitness, a gym that may not be in your area. I love the support I get there and it's promise to be a judgement free zone. The staff and members are supportive and willing to show you how to use the various machines. So far, in the past four months I've picked up speed on the treadmill and can almost do three miles in an hour. I'm 68 and getting back in shape and trying to lose some of the weight I've gained from eating processed foods and being sedentary for the past ten years. I feel great.

    With osteoarthritis, it's important to find your Goldilocks zone between moving too little and moving too much.

      I just turned 62 and I have to stop myself from jumping in and going too far too fast. Then I can't move for a week!

    I am 61 years old and started weight training last year. I am going slowly because I have osteoporosis. I feel a big difference in my overall health and strength. I was motivated to workout after visiting my parents in a seniors residence. Most people could not walk or get out of a chair. That is not the future I want if I can help it.

    Since my mother became a pensioner most of her friends and acquaintances told her to relax, slow down and indulge her hard-earned pension. My mother do just that and accepts them, eating poorly, aversion to exercise, and believing that supplementation can improve her current state of being. I had made my effort to inform her how she can improve her wellbeing but she simply dismiss me and said that I'm only turned 30 and once I reached about her age, 55, I'll be in the same boat. It is frustrating and demoralising to me as her son, in addition of having to hear her complaining about her bodyaches and food cravings is the cherry on top of this figurative cake.

    The gym! Ah the gym… I’m 61 years old and like many of us I fight many many challenges; both knees have been replaced, surgery on both shoulders, fibromyalgia, high blood pressure, high triglycerides, 12 surgeries in total in 9 years, addiction, bipolar disorder, pre diabetes and general body weakness. But!, everything (and I mean everything!), every bit of everything is managed in the gym. I came very close to death after detox. Starting to workout **at my personal level** was the most important element of my survival. (Please don’t strive for my results, it’s taken 11 years to get here) I can now comfortably walk 5 miles, I lift heavy, I hike, scuba diving is my passion, I do everyday chores with ease, lifting groceries etc is something I don’t have to think about and I’m managing my mental health issues successfully. Exercise is the panacea of life. And remember, I’m 61 years old!

      Ladies only gym sounds helpful.
      I used to go to the gym. Men staring as tho free entertainment is unnerving. My friends say the same. The men who do this are
      the dumb bells in the gym. 😤

    Your channel and your approach to all things fitness are a wealth of information! Not just doctors give out advice to take it easy, but society in general prides itself on telling us how to live. Lots of online workouts are good but I have commented on them when they mention No Gym Needed workout. That’s nonsense because gyms have their place with trained staff and up to date equipment to challenge you. The short time doctors schedule on our visits make it up to us to manage our physical health. Never do they talk about exercise. I have osteoporosis and was referred to a bone endocrinologist who never mentioned seeing a physio to look at key exercises to strengthen bones and muscles. I am doing that. Maybe the general population doesn’t follow through with exercise? So doctors go right to meds? Maybe you could interview a doctor on your channel and ask them about that. It would be interesting. Love your channel. Thank you 👍🇨🇦

    My husband suffers with both OA and RA. He says keeping his mind active keeps his mind off pain. He spends much time in “ his” garage working on his car collection. Some days are better than others. Quality sleep also is helpful.

    I started working out 10 years ago when I was 46. I am now 56 and even look, feel better and actually much healthier than ten years ago. I have with me my fitness coach, of course. I can't even imagine quitting the gym, even when i'm in my 60s. I'm stronger, more balanced, and my glow up is just wonderful. Now, people, when they see me, mistake me for being 45. 🙂

    I am currently 73. I have been going to the gym (my own gym these days) for about 10 or 12 years. I used to go to a public gym but guess what... when it came to the resistance training section of the gym, I came upon almost nothing but younger people and body-builder types. So, no, that ended my gym membership. I put a little money into it and bought dumbbells of various weights, a workout bench, one of those Styrofoam rollers and a few other items. I would agree that gardening and walking aren't enough. To that end, I get a little annoyed when I hear "it's better than nothing".

    I go to the gym at least 5 days a week and just as much of a benefit besides keeping my body healthy is my mental health. I have a friend who fractured her hip at 87 and 9 months later is still using a walker most of the time she is still amazed that I bounced back from the same fracture 2 years ago and my response was I was fairly fit before that which helped me tremendously.

    I personally don’t go to the gym because it’s not at all convenient. I’d spend a large part of the time I now spend exercising driving there and back and I also hate driving.
    So I do everything at home. I try hard to keep my form as good as possible. I exercise a lot. I recently incidentally while doing Les Mills Body Balance found I can do the splits at 71! I can do it easily without risking injury. All that yoga and hyper mobile hips and hamstrings!
    Probably a useless skill but I’m happy 😂

    Thank you, Will, for another excellent video! I'm approaching 72 and I was having horrible pain in my hips and knees. I talked to my PCP about it and she basically told me to suck it up because of my age. Then I started a fairly strict carnivore diet (~80% red meat). Three months later I have little to no pain. It used to be an ordeal just getting out of bed in the morning. That's all gone now.

      Give it a bit more time 😂😂😂 my doctor says she has three patients at least every month at her hospital department- not big really - all with complications bc of these marvelous diet. Have you heard about Wałesa? You know fall of communist regime in Poland and so on. So he was a big advocate of this diet - cured his diabetes and so. Next thing we hear he is in hospital with renal failure. From that time to this day - no more talking about this miracle diet.

    This video has answered so many questions I've had about joining a gym at age 71. Will definitely join after listening to Wills advice. I have never been in the least bit athletic, this may be contributing to my current situation. Last year I worked up to walking 3-4 miles almost every day, this summer I can only walk 2-2.5 miles and my legs ache. I believe that leg presses, if that's what they're called, will help me and this video has so encouraged me to do it. Thank you Will!

      If you have a YMCA near, you definitely check that out. They have an entire program just for people that are older. Everybody in my 7 AM class is older than me and it’s not an easy class.

    The most solid advice for us over 50's from this guy. Only one thing I'd like to add. I'm close to 60. My rule of thumb is "Use it or lose it!" I still try to do all the pastimes I did as a kid. Cycling, swimming, even skateboarding. Sure, I was good at skateboarding as a kid so most of it is muscle memory and I take far fewer risks these days but doing something that is fun and active is the best way to get fit. Skateboarding has been great for my balance and core but I do need to work on upper body strength so have recently taken up paddleboarding. Gosh it's a struggle to get back on it after falling in but it's fantastic to get my arms and shoulders working again. I've even considered a bouldering gym but I haven't found the time yet. I'm not suggesting my pastimes are a suitable level for many but the point is to do something fun that requires some effort. You won't notice you're exercising and for me, it's way better use of my time than doing reps down the gym. Also, when you have a fun activity, you're more incentivised to do any extra exercise you need so you can level up on the activity you love.

    My insurance pays for my gym membership. I try to go 3x a week. I’ve had total elbow replacement surgery…don’t have much strength in that arm…reinsured, rod became unglued, facing surgery again with rehab. I will continue to go to gym when possible again. Thanks for advice on weight…I’m near 30% and have been concerned about weight…..you just made my day.

    I wanted to let you know I’ve been watching and applying your advice and I find that it does help me. For instance, every time I get up and down from the pew at church I do not use my hands to get up. I’ve been working at this for about a month.
    I’ve become so strong in my legs because of this that I started to practice getting up sitting in a hill without using my hands like I did when I was in my 20s.
    I am now 53 and I walk for an hour a day and take a day or to break when my body feels like it needs to.
    Listening to your videos has helped me to listen to my body.
    I’ve been watching you for a couple of months now.
    I’m from America.
    Keep up the great work at helping people like me.
    I have a daughter who is recovering from cancer at age 15 and the pain in my hip I’m assuming it’s from inflammation has been excruciating. I didn’t know how I was supposed to help her and other people around me when I was feeling in so much pain. I stopped eating wheat and dairy and meat and some beans and have been exercising with you and I am hardly in pain at all anymore. Thank you so much I really value your advice keep up the good work!     I see absolute proof of what you say about Gym attendance and staying fit. I had a job where I had to maintain a high standard of personal fitness to remain operational, there were of course people who did purely admin or logistic tasks within the same organisation. We have an annual reunion, we are all now early 70's to some like me at 80 years, and it is very noticeable that those who have maintained a degree of fitness do not suffer many of the afflictions that seem to trouble those who never were fit or have not controlled their weight or personal fitness. I know some have listened to the 'Stay away from the Gym at your age' advice and now suffer because of that bad advice.

    Having lived an active (70+) life of farming, hiking, gardening, it is was a shock when (Fall2023), working outside my legs dragged, rather than picking up my feet. I used canes and practiced walking in the house, up and down stairs. I'm buying the book!!!

    glad to hear someone saying these things. I'm 74 and have been doing strength training for 2 1/2 years. Started doing some run/walk at 70. Walked my first marathon last year. Started having a problem with one of my knees 2 months ago. I babies it for a while to no avail. I had paid for a 5k so I did it inspite of my knee hurting and by the time the race was over, my knee felt much better. Keeping active is so important as we age, both physically and mentally ie being open to new ways of thinking : trying new things.

    I am going to retire earlier because I want to exercise more. Of corse I also have other interests, but I need to do resistance training, cardio, pilates, yoga and meditation and while working 8 hours a day I do not have time. I go home tired and I just do some resistance training 3 times a week and during weekends I go trekking. I am 63 and it's time to look after my health. Thanks, great video

    This is wonderful video full of very sensible information. Im 80 and i have a real passion-ballroom dancing- which is brilliant motivation for keeping flexible, fit and strong. Im constantly exercising muscles to improve my dancing. I still compete and teach. I use the gym regularly of course, but i specifically work on calf muscles ( heel raises) glute muscles, quad exercises-all to improve dance technique. I work on posture, abdominal strength etc. The motivation i get from the determination to improve my dancing, which i love , is magic. I dont hear those 3 little words" at your age". My brain has blocked them out. When i step.on the dance floor, any little niggles and stifness disappear within 10 seconds, really. Its magic so, find a passion that requires you to care for your physical and mental well-being i would unreservedly recommend ballroom dancing. Two left feet? Take your shoes and socks off, put your feet together and look at your big toes. Next to each other, right? Anyway, where are all the people with wo right feet?😊

    Brilliant advice here and delivered in such a genuine fashion. I'm 64 and feel 40. I lift weights, do squats with weights, do a myriad of stretches and yoga poses, ride my stationary bike, walk my dogs, jump rope and do cardio exercises on You Tube, all from home for free. I eat wisely, take my supplements, wear sunscreen, practise gratitude and relax my mind on a daily basis. Be good to yourself if you wish to be good to others.

    I was diagnosed with osteoporosis after a year of chemotherapy. I hired a personal trainer to work with 2 days a week and went to the gym 5 days a week (i am working full time). The osteoporosis is gone! Move!

    I am 73 and very fit and workout/gym 6 days a week. I have been diagnosed with back arthritis and hip bursitis (knees are fine). I do my rehab. Is there such a thing as too much exercise? Walking feels much better than sitting! Thanks!

    My plan is to be anble to bench 1,5 times bodyweight at 70 years old, Deadlift 2,5 times bodyweight at 70 years old, and squat 2 times bodyweight at 70 years old, and i also have a plan to be able to run 10 kilometer under 45 minutes at that age, and be able to to at least 10 pullups when i am 70. Elite in both strengt and stamina, and i know 100% shure that i can make it, because i am addicted to the gym 😎

    Best advice i have is to treat your mechanical injuries by gently slowly improving the range of the limb etc. Dont use weights until you've improved the range. My rotator cuff and popped bicep are nearly normal now.
