Got one, 4 door, my daily driver... been everywhere... does everything... sounds beautiful, smiles all round. Uprated my brakes with Riley 1.5 drums up front, and eventually I will fit the taller diff from a Wolseley 1500. Economical, workable, repairable.
My aunt had a mid sixties pale green Minor. I remember being taken to the pictures in that car as a child in the 70's in Auckland New Zealand. These cars were everywhere during the 70's and 80's in NZ. A mate had one that was a late 50's example that he resurrected as a first car. My first car was a Morris 1100 that I dragged out of my Dad's shed where it had lain rusting for a few years with the engine in pieces on the workbench. I didn't have the patience to rebuild the engine, so bought a second hand engine from a wreckers yard and got it running. That was in the early 80's. Same A-series engine as the Minor, just mounted sideways with the engine in the gearbox, so dropping the subframe to install it was not a difficult matter even for a novice like me. I loved that little car.
My aunt had a pale green 4 door Minor and she lives in Auckland but drives a Mazda 2 these days. We had a ‘66 Morris 1100 and a ‘72 1300 in my immediate family, the 1300 finally left us in ‘93. Great memories.
I have owned a 1958 2 door saloon named Morty for over 20 years.. 1098, ribcase, disc brakes. Great car. The chassis is so live, it just begs for more power, but great fun even as is. Almost as fun as my Austin America in the twisties.
It's got a lovely timeless shape like the Beetle and Citroen 2CV...😁👌
I know, I'm late to the party this time too. I grew up in Connecticut USA and around 1971 or 72 the boyfriend of our neighbor high school girl had a Morris Minor convertible, but not only that he had a Saint Bernard dog. This was very funny to us kids at the time
A lot to be said for simple cars and engineering. I hate the way cars are super complicated now, great video

Passed my test in a van in 1967...it was our farm workhorse basically hated it (wanted a car) BUT can't knock how bloody good they were better than any competition. ...indestructible. ..😊👍 cheers from dave..
One of my aunts,had a 53 Morris minor,in portugal, another aunt had a 53 Morris oxford series 2 also in Portugal I guess they liked Morris cars.i was 7 years old at the time,what did I know about cars,now that I'm 62 I appreciate them, cheers.
Takes me back to my younger days when I drove an XJS and my friend had a 2 door Minor - I was the jealous one!
We had a 4 dr. as a family car in the early 70’s when I was 3 or 4 years old...in the USA! It was red with a white top and had chunky looking Chevy Vega steel wheels with tiny chrome hub caps. Adorable little car

These were really great. My girlfriend thought we would never get up Hardknott Pass (or wherever it was, somewhere in Wales or Dorset actually) in hers. She liked it but she was more of the school of 'the little car goes parp-parp', like Noddy. Double-declutched her into second (the Morry, not the girl) and up she went (both the Morry and the girl, and me too). Earlier I had known a mechanic in Melbourne who had put a Cooper Climax engine into one. Caused a few surprises at the lights ... but then the Mini Cooper came out. Hiya MP :-)

Hearing that engine sound makes me feel nostalgic for the many Morris 1000 that my Dad owned.
My uncle has a Morris 1100 convertible in Black with the split screen and pop up side indicators! And a red interior. He also owns 2 Morris travellers. I personally don't like them but I can see their appeal and I'm glad there are some good examples still going.

Welcome to the pantheon of essential British classic cars, sir! My mother had one in her family from 1958 to 1983. It is still around now!
I do need one of these at home, Im sure it would come in handy for something. Was that the same car from 58 to 83?
@@furiousdriving, yes, a 1958 Morris Minor 1000 two door in turquoise. My grandfather bought her brand new (his second Minor) and passed her onto my mother in around 1969. My mother finally sold her to a colleague of my father's in 1983. He intended to restore it, but never did. In around 2005, an old friend of mine who is now retired from 40 years in the motor trade bought her from my father's former colleague and restored her. She was kept by him until a few years ago.

I had one of these in the early 70's. Put twin carbs and exhaust on it from a Mimi. It was a great little car.
I must say sweet little moggy, I remember a guy who dad's moggy was well modded with a MG metro engine engine with electric upgrade with the seats as well a tuneible car, convertible cars are a interesting taste for me it stops me breaking the speed limits and stag roof is great fun long as you go to driver's side door to pull the roof latch I could put my stag roof up in about a minute plus
Looks like a beautifully lovely day in the UK. Superb attention to detail as always, and spot on about the little details one remembers from childhood. I always wanted to hear what a Morris Minor engine sounded like in driving, especially being from America, and this was perfect! Sounds like a modern car actually.

That engine sound. You can't help but love these cars, as they put a smile on your face when you see one.When you mentioned things that stick with you as a kid, I liked the tail- lights on mk1 Cortina. They used to remind me of Rowntree's Fruit Gums! and the traffic light air fresheners from the 1970s, I used to like those, especially the plastic thing that stuck out!
Issigonis was a genius, and I have to agree about radios distracting and keeping the safety equipment to a minimum. The roads would be safer places if his ideas had been adopted. Just love the Minor, had 3 of them. Reliable and easy to work on , great on the corners as well.
What a lovely car! Really basic requirements, I don't remember if it had seat belts at all! In those days, collisions were less and this car took care of everything! No A.C.too!I wonder whether the present day cars will live like this! Added to that, we had a psychlogical attachment to these cars, as you love your pet dogs, and these cars kindle your old fragrant memories that go with this! Nice video and keep it up!

Being outsold by the Beetle was quite an embarrassment. The MM offered more body style choices (no 4-door or estate versions of the Beetle) but Morris were slower to update and upgrade the MM so the Beetle became the more mature product.
Probably that's why well maintained Beetles were considered collectible much earlier in the UK than in Germany.

My Dad had a spilt screen convertible in 1955, it was black with a red roof, had the signal arms in the doorposts, toured Europe in '56, like all Brits, because we were travelling far, he had the engine overhauled, we came back without a problem, magic motor
As a child of the 80's these were fairly common when I was growing up, there where still a few old banger Minors knocking around. I seem to see less of them on the road these days, even a few years ago they seemed to be common ;( Might just be a local demographics thing as many of the locals here are driving new electric cars now to 'save the planet'
If it's possible to love a machine, I love the Morris Minor.

Canterbury Convertibles restore the original factory built drop-heads. However, there are some very good companies that have converted 2-door saloons, these are perfectly OK, but the same can't be said for some of the DIY bodge jobs - definitely to be avoided. You could always get them rebuilt by the specialists to a good spec I suppose, with the strengthening in the right places.
Just inherited my grandfather's convertible moggie. It's been in family since 1966 just doing a few updates and hope to be out and about in it watch out inverness

"C" on the choke usually means "clothes peg" essential when setting up your car for an early start on a cold morning when a hand crank is neccessary beacause the battery is a bit knackered...
or the lock has gone on the chock cable - one peg for summer, 2 for winter
The four inch wide ridge down the centre of the bonnet is down to a mistake when the headlights moved from the grill to the wings, the new bonnet needed to be Three inches wider but no one redesigned the press, when the bonnets arrived too small, it was decided to cut them down the middle and weld in a filler strip to save costs and production time in making a new press. It was left proud as a design feature. Later a new press was made but the ridge was left as it added strength to the bonnet.
You have got a part of the story, but got it entirely wrong. It was during the prototype stage that Issigonis decided that the car needed to be 3" wider, so he cut the hand made car down the middle and added some extra metal. The first few hundred production cars had bumpers with a widening patch on them, because a batch of the bumpers had already been made before the decision to widen the car was taken. But all this was at the prototype stage, and no production car was widened.
@@psk1w1 I may have got it partially wrong but can remember my Fathers 1st. MM a 1949 split screen, headlight in grill did not have the ridge in the bonnet, but later still split screen , headlight in wings models did. The first production models having the same dimensions as the original pre production dimensions of the flat four as the original design concept was, the exception was a raised bonnet design to allow the use of the 850 cc side valve 4 cylinder engine of the pre war car due to cost. The later OHV A series engine was wider than the side valve, but still fitted between the chassis frame but needed a wider engine bay, unfortunately no one told the bonnet manufacturer. The rest of the body pressings were done in house so new press tools were made. Thankfully these errors don't occur that often with most modern cars made using outside body pressing companies and good communications between maker and sub contractors.

First production car to have rack and pinion steering and independent front torsion bar suspension unusual on a budget model.

My first car was a 1969 Traveller.Seat adjustment was simple.Length of 3x2 under the seat! Scrapped for fifteen quid in '81 due to corrosion,no money and grief from my landlord. I like to think parts of the old girl are still putting the miles on!

I know exactly what you mean about the coloured faceted lights around the speedometer meaning something to a child, as I was equally fascinated by these in the family mini and Riley Kestrel!

The best thing about a Minor is the exhaust. I could listen to the overrun all day. It does that due to having a bend in the exhaust over the rear axle. Britain was the king of making farting cars. Some people like to put Cherrybomb exhausts on them which spoils it.

Those 2 unmarked switches... one is headlights, the other is windscreen wipers. I had a moggie for 11 years, and I never could remember which was which!

Th extra space at the side of spare wheel is for a hammer a screwdriver and gaffa tape.all that should cover any brake down.thanks for the video.kevin
My that boot seems a century ahead of its time, so simplistic having so easy seperate access to the spare wheel and tools we seem to have gone backwards.
Its so obvious and keeps it clean and easy to access...now we don't get one at all on many cars :-(
The horsepower tax was based on RAC horsepower, based on the the piston diameter to work out that "Horsepower".

My high school teacher had a early leaky hood version. Unfamiliar with vehicle maintenance, other then petrol, he decided after being overtaken by a Vespa scooter, in a rain storm while attempting to ascend a local hill ,that it was time for another vehicle. Narragansett Bay

Great video especially all those camera angles, remember accidentally using third from starting off and up and over a bridge hardly made a difference. Remember seeing one in a mag for sale "all original except plastic wheel arch liners !" Which should reduce rust and road noise considerably.

The Mosquito name was actually meant to be used for the production version, but Lord Nuffield insisted on resurrecting the Minor name last used in 1934. Jack Daniels and Reg Job (who worked with Alec Issigonis on the design of the car) both believed the flat-4 engine prototypes were sabotaged during development (Lord Nuffield hated change as he got older) so they were replaced by the Morris Eight Series E side-valve engine for the production version.
A rare paddle shift version! The dodgy camera mount combined with Morris suspension meant I had to hide the in car camera view more than planned!

Great video. Sister had one in Devon. I had a Herald convertible which looked cooler. Wished I'd kept the Minor....I prefer modern cars to drive.

Nobody called the ohv models Minors. We called them Morris thousands.

70 mph in a 1000 on the motorways is no problem. I do it every mon - fri twice a day
someone as fitted a banjo steering wheel. which is more pleasing to look at. but is wrong for the year.

That's what I thought. This is a 65/66, and I'm sure they had the two-spoke steering wheel by then.
British cars of that era had Character,which made up for the many less desirable aspects of owning them!
