The “gotcha” attitude really bugs me! One place I constantly run into it is when people talk about wind generation for electricity. People love to show up and talk about bird deaths with that “gotcha” attitude.
But they’re making this comparison in a vacuum and totally disregard the fact that coal/natural gas power plants actually kill more birds per KWh generated! And they ignore the fact that the leading cause of bird deaths is actually outdoor cats.
So keeping our cats as indoor only and supporting Trap, neuter, release (TNR) programs in your local area will have a MUCH more profound effect on bird lives…

Shelby- thank you for making this video. It's really unfair that people are this nitpicky with your content. When people are new to low waste/sustainability, you are usually the first person I send them to because of all the reasons you listed. You seem like a real human being! You drive a car! You eat what you want to eat! You live in a house! I have so many friends that see people like me (live in a big city with ample public transit, in a small space, etc) and think they can't make any changes because they can't make the changes I've made. And a lot of sustainability "influencers" live lifestyles even more outwardly perfect than mine. Thank you for sharing your perspective! :) I'm a third year medical student, and I chose to become a medical student to address human suffering. A lot of aspects of my life, just because of being a medical student, are fairly unsustainable. Public transit is not an option for me, ignoring the fact that I live in Texas, because being on time is literally a matter of whether or not I keep my job, I cannot risk not being on time. I also have to buy lots of supplies that cannot be purchased secondhand, like my stethoscope, hospital attire (all of my business casual is secondhand but scrubs? Not willing to buy those used), notebooks (tech is iffy because of patient confidentiality), and other things that non-medical students don't think about. Not to mention the process of getting into medical school/residency, which usually means flying all over the country to accept whichever school/job you get offered. Of course I do the best that I can, I eat 100% plant-based, always buy clothing/furniture secondhand, and I try to reduce my impact wherever I can, but I will never be perfect. Other environmentalists pointing it out just makes me feel helpless lol

For what it's worth I love your slogan. It really helps any time something feels like only a small effort that won't help much to remind myself that any good I can put into the world is a positive. People love to criticise to make themselves feel justified in giving up and not trying at all. We can all only do the best we can with what we have and none of us can be perfect simply because the system doesn't allow us to but that doesn't mean we should just give up like many people sadly seem to think. Plus talking about our efforts helps everyone because we can all share ideas and it helps us all improve little by little.

Keep going girl, you're a beautiful soldier of the Earth and nobody's voice is more important than the voice of your soul, so if you're at peace with yourself and your life, the rest of the world can go to hell 😘😘💚💚

Shelby, I cannot even begin to tell you how much you’ve helped me with my sustainable lifestyle. It really hurts my heart that you even had to make a video like this. People who criticize you honestly just don’t understand how difficult it is to have a sustainable lifestyle particularly in the US and that you sometimes have to choose your mental health or yourself over sustainability. Yes, you can always be more sustainable, but do these people not understand you’re a human & need to live your life? It blows my mind that they have the need to comment about having AC, they obviously have never been to Texas in the summer. (Fellow San Antonian myself) 😂 y’all wouldn’t even last a day. Please know you have a huge community that supports and appreciates you! This is also honestly my first comment on one of your videos even though I’ve seen so many, just know you have tons of silent appreciators!!!

I feel like the last few weeks I've slipped a lot in my sustainable habits, and I'm wanting to get back into it. But having grace for myself in the times where I'm not "perfect" is so important, if I didn't I would get burned out SO easily.

Sending you hugs! (Some) people can be just awful! No one is perfect. And the people who leave these comments aren't perfect either - it is just that they want to pretend that they are. One of the things that I LOVE about your channel is that you don't claim to be perfect. You show the parts of your life where you aren't perfectly sustainable. And at the same time, you call it out - you say, this is not the most sustainable thing that I do but I am doing the best that I can and that is what matters. Lots of times, you mention what is the most sustainable option for those who are able to do this (access, affordability, lifestyle, etc). There are so many people who think that they can only be environmentalists if they do everything...then, they get overwhelmed and do nothing. That is the last thing that this planet needs. Thank you for everything that you do!

First, I LOVE when people make ranty videos, but I am very sorry that you felt that you needed to due to negative comments.
I definitely agree with you that the people who are making the comments you mentioned (on either side) are people who can't watch all of your videos. Your outro messages are very clear and helpful, and strike the right balance in my opinion between "there is no ethical consumption under capitalism" (true) and individual choices do matter.
I also want to agree with the general sentiment that we can't do everything right all the time. No one's actions can line up with their ideology 100% of the time, and that's because we live in a complicated, nuanced world. I've been feeling really bad about crafting projects recently because I enjoy doing them but there isn't really a purpose for the completed crafts. But at the same time, I'm being sustainable with my crafting purchases and don't buy much (crafting or otherwise) new. The people who are making these comments are making them in either ignorance or bad faith, and haven't given time to critically think about the issues.
Thank you for this video! I always appreciate your content, and look forward to new videos + newsletters (whenever you're in the headspace for them again!).

I'm so sorry you have to go through this. I have learned SO MUCH from your channel and have been able to critically think about my choices and how they can be more sustainable. Remember that the people who are criticizing nitpicky shit are people who are most likely doing nothing themselves to make better choices, or who feel helpless to do something, so they instead choose to take it out on others who dare to do better.
There's a difference between genuine criticism that opens productive discussion, and judgmental criticism that compromises good intention and generates zero progressive action. It's not easy to "just ignore the negative comments," but please remember that the good you're doing completely outweighs the pointless criticisms that you're receiving.

I really enjoyed how candid you were in this video. I completely understand why you wouldn’t want to talk about food given people being toxic and why people request it highly because as someone who has to eat gluten free at times it is super hard to try and be as low waste as I’d like and get reasonable gf food.
It wasn’t my daughter turned maybe 5 months or 6 months and a female consultant for an education savings company tried to suggest how I style her hair over a zoom call that I realized how ridiculously and deeply engrained it is in our society for people to think they have a right to comment on peoples appearances. She’s just over a year and every time someone says something positive or negative about her appearance I cringe now because she doesn’t exist for the sake of other people to look at or have an opinion on her appearance, so I can only imagine how amplified that is when your career involves a public forum like TH-cam. I’m sorry that you have experienced that toxicity and I hope in the future viewers will remember what your content is actually about and keep unsolicited (especially the toxic ones) opinions to themselves

Hello Shelbi! I totally love your content!!! What you're doing is extremely important and it makes a huge difference in the world! Thank you for your lead! Even though I have no scientific proof, I'm pretty confident that these judgmental people either criticize you because you're doing better than them and they can't stand how well you meet your goal and how big is your impact or they are people that simply see enemies everywhere. No one owes an apology about their choices, anyway. Our goal as a community shouldn't be "perfection". Perfection isn't viable. If we strive for perfection we will end up doing less for the planet instead of more. Also, as you say sustainability is a "gray area", so there is no such thing as "perfection". But if we can assume that such a thing exists, then you have come very close.

I really loved and appreciate this vid! The sustainability space can be so toxic. It’s like, the minute you vocalize that you want to do better, people take that as an invitation to find all the things you’re doing that are “hypocritical” to that mission statement. I’ve seen this happen so often-there will be two creators: one that has never mentioned sustainability, and one that has mentioned wanting to try to do better for the planet. The two of them do a brand partnership with Target or H&M, etc. and the comment sections are only tearing apart the one who has mentioned sustainability. I definitely think there are issues with those kinds of greenwashing partnerships, but I just feel like people are sooo quick to criticize anyone who steps into sustainability. My parents do this too - I mention trying to reduce waste and then my dad will say “well, aren’t you using water to wash that reusable cup?” It goes back to the black/white, all-or-nothing mentality and importance of understanding the nuance that you mentioned in your previous video. I don’t even like using the word “sustainability” or “minimalist” because the internet has turned those words into something synonymous with “perfection,” yet, like you mentioned, the algorithm loves those words. It truly is hard navigating things as an internet person, and I think you did a stellar job touching on so many important things in this video. Love your integrity and honesty as always.

People need to understand that living 100% sustainably in this society IS NOT POSSIBLE. We can only do our best with the tools we have, and the rest is up to corporations. As individuals we are simply subject to the means we have, everyone has different needs and abilities, it is simply not realistic to expect everyone to do everything all the time. I would argue that it is better that we do some of it some of the time than to give up because we don't feel like we can do it all. It is psychologically proven that you cannot SHAME people into being better, quite the opposite actually. People get stirred away from being more sustainable when we start gatekeeping. This is not meant to be a fashion but rather a paradigm change. So everyone chill out, be kind, do what you can, lead by example, and like Shelby says: Advocate for the rest.

I'm a very new subscriber, and from the first video I saw, I LOVED your phrase "you can't do all the good the planet needs, but the planet needs all the good you can do". It is such a great message, and is a brilliant way to encourage people who otherwise would throw up their hands and say "why bother" when we can't do everything perfectly.
It's a real shame that people will try to trip you up with things they notice. If you projected a holier than thou kind of mentality (e.g. if your approach was to scold your viewers about not taking every eco-friendly step possible in their life) then I'd understand the kickback from viewers... But the wonderful thing about your channel is that you are a realist and you give advice, rather than a blueprint or dogma.
All strength to you and your family, and I wish your audience in general grows to match you in hopefulness, tolerance and pragmatism.

I'm thankful you made this video, but sad for you that you felt like you need to explain yourself! Full honesty, your motto of "you cannot do all the good the world needs, but the world needs all the good that you can do" ACTUALLY (like my memory pinpoints it on one of the first videos of yours I watched a little less than a year ago) to not only work more towards my footprint and being more sustainable conscious, but also drove me into being more engaged in fighting for the rights of my community (not eco-related, but definitely helped empower me to seek fighting for better working conditions in my industry, which personally I also think is powerful.) Your motto I think has attracted and empowered so many including myself, BECAUSE it inherently challenges viewers to engage in healthy thought to try one's best, while also forgiving one's self for being human, and living in a world that is not built for ultimate sustainability. I know so many people who feel defeated in the face of climate change, but I think outlooks like this one HELP encourage people to try - we don't need to give up, nor abuse ourselves for our mistakes, because that will just also make us give up, which is how this system works!!! This was a long ramble, but I just wanted to say thank you Shelby, I hope you continue to take care of yourself, and you have encouraged and empowered so many people in a world that currently feels like it needs to beat us down. You are doing all the good you can do, and that has been more than enough.

It’s so much easier to criticize others than it is to look at your own faults. I think that’s why people get so damn nitpicky because they won’t look at their own lives and improve it when they can “feel better” by pointing out someone else’s “imperfections”. I adore your content, and I think you’re doing so much to help the world not just in the sustainable things you do but also by educating others. I just want to say I’m really frustrated that you receive that kind of feedback! I’ve been so interested in low waste and more eco-friendly living for so long but it wasn’t until I found your channel that I felt like I could truly do it. you have such a kind, sensible, understanding approach to it. I quote your end statement to so many people when I share about changes I’m making to be more sustainable or aware. So I guess I just want to thank you for actually putting out content to inspire not condemn. Ironically I always found the zero waste movement very toxic. And sometimes felt like all the things I was trying were worthless anyways because I could not do it perfectly until I found you! Eco Fatigue is so real and I wish this community was more about celebrating what we are doing instead of criticizing each other. When we criticize I feel like it just makes us all want to give up and what is that really doing for earth??? Thank you Thank you!! I really appreciate what you do!! The reason you're one of my favourite TH-camrs is because you're honest. You motivate to make sustainable choices where possible, and don't judge people who make an effort but can't do everything. The people who criticise you aren't perfect themselves, they want to inflict their rudeness onto other people without care for their feelings. I console myself by thinking their choosing to be rude on a video that someone has put time and effort into says more about them and nothing about who they're being rude to, but it's cold comfort. I'm very happy I discovered your channel, and as a byproduct of that your vlog channel, because your videos bring happiness and educate in a way that's informative and easy to digest.

Yay you! Being under the microscope is unnerving. I'm so grateful for your content and everything I've gleaned from your videos has helped me make more eco friendly shifts. Like I started composting. And here's the thing, when we look at our biology and our place in the eco system we are consumers, not in the sense of purchasing everything, but in the producer consumer relationship. I think when we try, when we give back in a culture its wonderful. Living in a drought and being a gardener is hard, but I'm sequestering carbon with my plants. I'll let my lawn dry up, but lemme grow my food and flowers so the bees have a place. It's all about balance and society has created a very unhealthy environment requiring perfection and demanding more than is realistic. And that's why I love your channel and your outro. I think it everyday. It's like my eco mantra. Keep doing what you are doing.

I thank you and respect you for putting this out there. Personally, I love seeing the imperfect side (the real side!) of people's lives when it comes to sustainability. It helps me as a baby environmentalist to identify where I can best focus my energy and realize that there are many things out of my control. Seeing the "highlight" reel of perfection really just leaves me feeling inadequate, so I appreciate what you do. And that you will explain how you came to that decision (not that you owe us any explanation, just helps me to understand :-))
