    Seems like the 'that girl' routine also requires an inherent privilege of ✨tiiiime✨. Time is a resource that I don't think enough influencers acknowledge when they push "optimization" content. Kinda icky when I think about it. We shouldn't feel shame for not being able to match the lifestyle of someone with an uncommon amount of time within their own control. Excellent video as always Shelby 🧡

      This comment!!! I always beat myself up over not being able to live a clean lifestyle something like “that girl.” However, working 12 hour days at an exhausting job means that I barely have time for myself some days. This comment is a great reminder that everyone has their own life and schedule that fits their needs

      This is so true! I work 24 hour a week, go to school fulltime and have a husband, kid and house to take care of.... My alone time is the time I spend in the car driving everywhere 🤦🏼‍♀️. I manage my time perfectly but this "that girl" routine sounds exhausting 🤣🤣

      Why is it icky for them to create this content just because it doesn't apply to everyone? Would it be icky for someone to create a college study tips content because not everyone can go to college? If you are feeling shame, it's not the fault of those creating the content. If you think you need to be like them, you are the one holding yourself to that standard - nobody else. I bet the people who care about you will still love you whether you are waking up at 6am and journaling or not.

      @@janicefinch3563 they force the lifestyle down your throat and manipulate you into feeling bad when you don't do it. Its icky because it does cause mental health harm and is perpetuating harmful trends and lifestyles that are bad for us and the planet

    • @janicefinch3563
      @janicefinch3563 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Eternalsunshinejewelry Maybe I haven't seen the videos of creators being like "If you don't live like me you should feel bad", but I don't think most of them are forcing it upon anyone. If you don't like the content, you don't have to click on it or you could scroll past.
      I get the bad for the planet point, but at the same time that criticism can be made of any content creator who's not in the sustainability niche.

    • @emilijamak433
      @emilijamak433 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@amystephens513 another mom here, it's less about martyrdom and more about food waste. By my own experience and observations kids need to be trained to eat leftovers and until that training is complete you don't want to waste food that took time, effort, and money to produce. I'll usually take smaller portions than I would normally and finish what my kid doesn't eat. This isn't completely universal as they learn to better understand taking only what they will eat in a sitting and my own knowledge of what they are most likely to eat if I put it in the fridge once they are done with it. Similarly it also depends on the food itself, a dressed salad or cereal in milk get disgusting if allowed to sit around, or if it's say one or two bites left on a plate I really don't need that taking up space in my fridge.

    To be honest I think the "that girl" trend is just another trap for women: they have to be perfect, productive, intellectual, feminine. And if you don't do all of that you are not an attractive woman. I haven't seen the "that boy" trend?
    If you are reading this and thinking "wtf", I recommend reading "the beauty myth". It's from the 90s but I think this trend is just what the book describes coming back to life.

      My understanding of “That Girl” has always been someone who is unique, and stands out making people turn their heads. She was not just beautiful, but beautiful on the inside too. She didn’t follow trends, but became a trendsetter and not even intentionally. Whenever I hear this trend I think of the sitcom “That Girl” with Marlo Thomas. She was a big role model for women then, and she always portrayed a positive and independent character for her female fans, to have have their own mind. On top of that she wore beautiful clothes and was stylish, but her personality was likeable and loveable. That’s really what made her stand out, was who her character was on the inside

      This trend is weird to me. I know of no one who is successful, productive, and has good mental health who is also heavily into social media.
      Also, you should never feel bad about not being a morning lark. 11 PM for night owls can be equally as productive as 6 AM for morning larks.

    • @kutanra
      @kutanra 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the issue with any lifestyle change is trying to immediately make drastic changes. Dont wake up at 7am and run 10k if you've never woken before 10 or been off the sofa during lockdown. Make little gradual changes, eg I have to go up three stories for my work cafeteria for lunch. As much as possible I do the stairs instead of the lift now.

      bit of a nitpick, but considering genetics plays a role in your circadian rhythm, it's kinda weird that getting up at the crack of dawn is so crucial to this trend

    • @Oiami-.-
      @Oiami-.- 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@kutanra in generell yes to the little steps but at some point that doesn't make a difference anymore, since bodys respond different to our own circadian rhythm hormones (I could elaborate but that would produce way to much text). Which is why some people won't get tired till 1 am and other can't keep themselves awake after 10 pm. This is also tied to what time we are the most productive e.g the brain of a evening person will not be awake and productive at 8 am even if they force themselves into an early every day schedule. The same as an morning person will not be productive anymore at 10 pm.

    I'm so glad that you talked about "your fantasy self." I've noticed that there's so many things in the past that I bought (even in the name of being more sustainable) for my fantasy self. Since I learned about that concept I try to tip toe into potential habits without buying something for at least a few months before I take the plunge. For example, I've been bullet journalling for 2 years with pens I already have - it's not as cute, but I wanted to make sure that habit is there before I bought "nice" pens. And even then, I am still experimenting with my own style before I buy more.

    Lucky for me I live in South Florida and we have avocado trees growing all over, so I always have local fresh avocados 😊
    Also, I find that journaling right before bed is best for me, I keep my journal on my nightstand and that way I am reminded. It also helps to just brain dump before bed, then I feel like I can fall asleep easier. I like to focus on writing down the good things that happened that day for me, and all the things in my life that I am grateful for. It puts me in a good feeling place right before falling asleep, which helps me to wake up in a better feeling place as well.
    Thank you for speaking up about chickens and how they are bred to produce so many eggs. I think going to the grocery store and buying animal products really puts a barrier between the reality of what animals go through. Also, how much of those animal products are thrown away everyday in grocery stores just makes me feel so sad for the animal that suffered for no reason, but that is a whole other topic for discussion.

    I only take about 2 hours to do everything. But that also includes my procrastination and mom-ing between the different things. I wake up at 5:00 and I make sure to have everything done by 7:00 a.m. so that way I can get my daughter to school.

    Seeing you work out was actually really inspiring. I haven’t been as active since I started working more and honestly since the beginning of the Panera lockdowns. Since it’s been so long since I have been inside a gym at this point it’s super intimidating. Even when I would go I would often feel a bit lost. I forget that I really enjoy workouts that rely on body movements, versus equipment. I sometimes feel like I gotta do something special to work out. I forget that the best exercise feels natural and fun. Anyway I’m planning on setting aside 10 minutes of stretching and aerobics in the morning, and gradually increasing the duration.

    The avocado toast thing is so hard for me because on the one hand I live in California and I'm literally surrounded by avocado trees so I know that I personally can eat them almost whenever I want to. Additionally, it's really healthy and avocado toast is one of the things that helped me get my body back to a healthy equilibrium. But it is unsustainable for most populations in the world and I think that's really a shame because it is incredibly healthy.

    I didn't know the 'that girl' was a specific kind of girl... I don't have tiktok so I saw the occasional reel on Insta about it, and honestly thought that everybody has their own 'that girl'. The girl you look up to, that inspires you, that you want to 'copy' a little bit... So honestly I saw YOU as one of my 'that girl's! Like, you inspire me so much and you live rent free in my head as sort of an extra conscience? When I want to buy something I do go for my own styles/needs/.. but there's always the Tiny Shelbi in the back of my head that reminds me 'Do I need it? Do I actually like it? Can I borrow/rent/get secondhand?
    Anyways, I found this a very fun and educational video, and I hope people keep finding your channel and see the sustainable light you always radiate.

    Oh, this is something I see a lot of in the journalling community -- something about it had always seemed a little bit off to me, and I think you really nailed down some of the things that had been wiggling in the back of my head on this. The romanticism towards it isn't always bad but...for someone with mental illness, it's so much work for so little payoff lol.
    I'm glad you posted this, as I never really thought about the sustainability side of things. Thanks, this was fun and informative! 🌱

    I also struggle with journaling & topics. When I remember to journal, my main topic the last few years has consistently been "3 things my husband did right today". Big things, little things. I think in our culture, we're just as quick to throw away relationships as we are things. It's hard to break free from my own negative mindset, but I'm a better partner when I'm intentionally appreciating the best of him.

    I love that you did this take on the "that girl" trend! 👏🏻I have complex feelings about this trend. On one hand, I think it's great if it gets people to drink water, take better care of themselves and work towards their goals. On the other hand, I think it perpetuates the idea of what we "should be"/"fantasy self" rather than who we are and what is actually important to us.
    As these videos are aesthetically pleasing the trend focuses a lot on how we are seen by others rather than if we do feel truly good in ourselves. I have learnt to feel my best I needed to drop a lot of balls and accept that my house will be a mess at times for example because I need to rest and/or do other things that bring me joy. Definitely not aesthetic and something "that girl" does - but at least I feel rested and fulfilled!

    First video I've watched from your channel. You are genuine and thoughtful, really enjoyed watching the video. I learned a few things and I'm happy you pointed out the issues revolving around the "that girl" routine. I've never actually watched a "that girl" routine but I have seen snips of them and I'm repulsed by it. Not only does it damage a girls self- esteem (through unrealistic expectations), it promotes unstainable habits.
    Thank you for taking the time to create this video!

    I've never followed trends, or even be aware of them half the time (or I'm super late to the party), and honestly it has probably saved me so much money. While I'm now much more conscious of what I buy, in the past I know it would have been so easy for me to be influenced to buy what I don't really need (so probably a very good thing I didn't have social media when I was a teen). I hate things like 'that girl' (which I'd never heard of til this video thank goodness), as it holds the average person to an impossible standard. You mentioned how the routine took hours, which the majority of people won't have. Alongside that, the food and clothing choices, etc. But the worst thing is when someone inevitably fails at being 'that girl', they feel like failures which is not good for anyone's mental health. I feel most adults have learned to understand the difference between what we want to do, and what is feasible for our lives (yes, many of us need to work on balancing the 2, but I think most of us manage okay), but I worry about teenagers and younger people who don't understand why they can't follow this routine, or why they aren't enjoying it, which is unnecessary mental health stress. While I will never say social media is bad (it has literally saved my life multiple times), I do wish there was less comparing and more compassion.

    Who knew there was such a trend. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Now that I do, I’m once again proud I don’t get involved in these problematic trends that drive consumption and cause many women to ultimately feel like failures if they ‘don’t keep up’ with trends. Trends = more junk.

    I think everyone’s version of “That girl” should be different and consists of what makes THAT individual feel good. And it should cater to your lifestyle (how much time it takes) so that it’s sustainable and the habits are consistent. I 100% feel better when I do some of the typical “that girl” things early in the morning, I just do it my way aka a workout I look forward to, just throwing my comforter over my bed, eating a quick breakfast I like, etc.
    It’s probably because I’m not on tik tok I didn’t realize these girls always wear hats but the hat part of your video was both true and hilarious 😂 I feel so good when I’m wearing my sustainable brands to the gym and people compliment my outfits so I can share the brand.
    Also I’ve been using Osea for at least two years and just started using that serum and I love it.

    This was a super interesting video topic, Shelbi (with some suburb editing, I might add)! I feel like this trend is geared towards women in college, because that's the only category of person I can think that would have this amount of time for such an extensive routine. Also, because I've just been getting into going to the gym, working out every day is not sustainable, your body legitimately needs rest, especially if your goal is to build muscle. On the whole, this trend is unsustainable in terms of the planet, time, and potentially for your mental and physical health.
