My first Hoya was Argentea Princess…just jumped in head first. Acquired my Lacunosas later on. I always enjoy your videos! I am located in Schertz, Texas! It’s slightly North of San Antonio.
@ Yes, it is! It took forever for it to give me some growth but she’s finally giving me some vines with new leaves. Root system looks good. I purchased one for my daughter and hers has unfortunately reverted. I think she just cut it back to see if it’ll grow back.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE your channel! Whenever I have a Hoya question I come to your videos! You are such a wealth of cherishable knowledge. When I got the notification about this video I was at my favorite plant store in Bismarck North Dakota with two hoyas in hand! One not on either list, Hoya latifolia and the other on your next list Hoya compacta. I have a collection largely made up of philodendrons and epipremnums but hoyas are definitely finding their way into my collection of over 120 plants.
Thanks for your kind words, I'm glad if the videos are helpful. Two good choices for Hoyas, they are very much fun. Thanks for watching and adding your comment
I live in West Seneca-outside of Buffalo NY. I just received my Hoya Swiffers Tail this week and it is crazy looking and I love it! I am going to be the odd one out by saying I grow Hoyas for the foliage. If they flower that is great and if not that is fine too! I have about 40 varirties and I love them all! They are mostly young ones and I love watching them grow!
I never expected any of my Hoyas to bloom, so I, too, grew them for the foliage. Then I got my first bloom, and it bloomed again, and then another one, and now I grow for both - foliage and flowers. Thanks for watching and commenting with your location.
Interesting choices! 😊 Ill keep some of these in mind the next time someone asks I see a lot of people on TH-cam struggle with Hoya Lacunosa types and Hoya Bella, personally I have no issues with those plants at all, but it would make me hesitate to recommend them to someone who is just getting into Hoyas (unless I rooted the plantlets for them) (There is also Hoya Bella with fully white flower and a mutation of the variegated one that people like to call sandwich in case you want more of them 😅) If someone has no Hoyas but is into houseplants… Id suggest some Hoyas that grow easily, look “different” yet pleasing to the eye (leaf and growstructure wise) for people who are not into Hoyas yet, good appetizers If a friend or family member were to ask me which I would recommend to them, I think I would give them rooted plantlets of: - Hoya Carnosa Wilbur Graves - Hoya Caudata Sumatra - Hoya Heushkeliana inner variegated - Hoya Krohniana silver or Hoya Lacunosa Louisas silver or Hoya Rebecca - Hoya Latifolia pot of gold (Maybe Hoya Calycina, Hoya Flores Island UT-039 or Hoya UT-033) And would recommend Hoya Multiflora 😊 Watching from the Mid-South of The Netherlands (Europe) (province Noord-Brabant, but in the west of that 😅)
Nope, don't need any more H bellas - LOL. Some good suggestions. Usually if folks are struggling with H bella or H lacunosa there's some issues with the basic set-up, or with their approach to growing Hoyas in general, and it's good to get those resolved before moving to on some "pricier" Hoyas. H lacunosa and H bella can bloom early on, and there's nothing more rewarding that your first Hoya bloom. Thanks for watching and adding your comment
I kept nodding in agreement. Fairly new to hoyas, my first bloom (just fading now) is a davidcumingii "yellow flower". Bought the plant together with a bunch of other hoyas at a succulent and cactea nurcery as a filler basically, and boy did it suprise me! It has become from a space filler to a firm favourite in less than 4 months. The hoya carnosa (the normal one and the compacta), the kentiana, the callistophylla, I have these and agree with you on ease of growing. Probably would add the Hoya memoria/gracilis. Very fast and no fuss grower in normal room temperature and light, at least for me. And the multiflora has been on the list for a while, just haven't found anything of acceptable size and price yet. Already wrote once but no harm in repeating: greetings from Munich, Germany
Santa Barbara California. I agree with you on your choice of Hoya. It has been my experience also. Now I am actively looking for the decipulae. You are drinking from a stemless glass today 😊.
You noticed. I love the stemmed glasses, but these looked a bit more stable (something here needs to be) and I've had a couple of close calls with the traditional glasses. I'll see how they work out. Thanks for watching and including your location.
Another great video, thanks for sharing your extensive knowledge and joy with us. Just started growing hoyas this year and quickly have 13 in my care. No blooms yet, what your tip? Mississauga, Ontario
Different things (temperature, light, etc.) trigger blooming for different Hoyas, so there's no one answer. Give them a good set-up (container and mix), good light, regular acess to moisture, and feed 'em. Hoyas do appreciate regular feeding. Let us know how they're doing. Thanks for watching and adding your comment and location.
Love all of your videos, they are informative and entertaining at the same time☺️.Perfect timing, I ordered a lacanosa mint coin from Etsy today, it was a wish list plant for me. I agree, I hav3 several varieties and they are so easy care. I have the Asami also, it’s beautiful. Who doesn’t love the Bella? Great choice to include it. Yours is goals 🥹. Love Logees, we try to go once every few months. Shakespeares Garden in Ct is incredible for Hoyas too🤗. Long Island( Suffolk county) NY🎉
Very interesting video . Thank you for that. Great looking Hoyas. I live in the Netherlands in the beautiful European city of the year 2024: Amersfoort
I guess I just have to say it. I have several surviving Hoyas. I'm just one of those guys that doesn't get the hype. Please explain the obsession. Jack of all trades master of none.
It seems, among people who grow plants, that certain types of plants appeal to certain people; and that some people are more successful with some than with others. I can't grow Succulents, don't do well with Aroids, and I'll never buy another Fern. Maybe Hoyas aren't "your plant". But, just maybe, you haven't found the species of Hoya that appeals to you. I was "unconvinced" about Hoyas until they started growing for me, and when the first one bloomed, it was all over. If you're struggling with your Hoyas, ask questions, talk to folks. Hoyaheads are happy to share their addiction and their experiences. There's a lot of mis-information out there about Hoyas, but we're here to help. Thanks for watching.
Hello from Moscow, Russia. I really like your channel and your hoya collection. I sincerely congratulate you and your family on the upcoming Christmas and New Year, and I wish you an expansion of your collection and that it brings you only joy and happiness!

I am upstairs in my "cuddle room" enjoying the cool weather, I answered this before and so this is repetitive for you - Johnstown Colorado - love all your videos. Hey, what is your favorite color? I was teasing Sober Plant guy about his favorite color (purple) and told him that I would lose all faith in people if your fav is either Red or Purple. PLEASE........... don't let it be one of those two colors. 😛
For the last decade I've been in a green phase, in more than just plants, so I guess your faith in people is safe for the time being. Thanks for watching and Including your location and be nice to SPG.
Always admiring the shelf right behind you. I have a similar one, but don’t think it’s as tall. My shelves seem closer together and make it more challenging for my taller plants. Would you please give a quick tutorial/description on the set up? Love your content and look forward to each installment. Happy Holidays from (just 40 minutes away) from Louisville, Kentucky.
I have thoroughly enjoyed this video - thank you so much for your efforts in putting this great & very helpful information for us 🫶🏻 I live in the north island of New Zealand. We have retired here in the small town of Waihi known for its silver & gold mine. Extremely friendly here & we are only about 15 minutes by car away from a fabulous beach (Waihi Beach). We are now enjoying the beginning of our summer ☀️☀️☀️
Heather, I'm just a little bit jealous about the start of your summer. It was 21°F/-6°C here this morning, and while I'm a New Englander and we pride ourselves on getting through our winters, it doesn't mean we like it. Thanks for your regular watches and comments, and for adding your location.
Well, you're not. I have an H carnosa 'Krinkle 8' and it's one of my favorites, it's big and it blooms regularly. Some people have told me that it's difficult to find, and I don't see it offered very often. Maybe we need to talk it up more. Thanks for watching, wave to my cousins in Laval.
Thanks. I know, I saw the forcast for y'all, stay safe. Hope the power stays on. Thanks for watching. Now I'm off to watch your video about rescue orchids, of which I have several, 'cause who doesn't see them in the store and think "I can fix that".
...and that's a shame, 'cause if someone wants to "try out" Orchids, the discount shelf at a big box store is the place to start, and you warned them what to look out for and what to do when it comes home.
I have questions about H. decipulae. I've always shied away from thin-leaf Hoya but this one intrigues me. Can it be kept short with pruning? Can it support itself without a stake? Does it get woody at the base? Does it vine? Would you say a typical aroid mix would work? What remarkable flowers! And those leaves are very unique. Your H. retusa...goals! Mine is recovering from a too-dry mix. Peppering you with questions from Rome, Georgia, US.
OK... I think H decipulae could be kept shorter through pruning, though I haven't yet pruned mine. It might get bushier, which could be a plus or a minus. It can support itself, somewhat, but tends to arch out to the sides and would take up more horizontal room than I choose to give it - real estate is at a premium in the plant room. It might get woody at the base, but mine has not, so far. The mix for H decipulae might depend upon the container, mine is in self-watering. H decipulae does not want to dry out and seems to like an airy mix - maybe whatever you're using for your H retusa. Thanks for watching, asking your questions, and including your location.
I kept my multiflora in my west facing window I till this fall and I couldn’t close my blinds down on it. Didn’t bother me in-the spring and summer. Now it’s on the floor.
On your multiflora, do your peduncles fall off when done blooming? Mine do with in three days. They start to turn yellow and fall off each and every time.
Sometimes, and I think that may be caused by inconsistent watering on my part. Even though it's in a self-watering pot, someone has to water the self-watering.
A lot of people did, 'cause they're cool plants, but I killed my first H obovata though lack of experience. They're good "next" plants, but for new Hoyaheads, I think there are better first choices.

Interesting choices! 😊
Ill keep some of these in mind the next time someone asks
I see a lot of people on TH-cam struggle with Hoya Lacunosa types and Hoya Bella, personally I have no issues with those plants at all, but it would make me hesitate to recommend them to someone who is just getting into Hoyas (unless I rooted the plantlets for them)
(There is also Hoya Bella with fully white flower and a mutation of the variegated one that people like to call sandwich in case you want more of them 😅)
If someone has no Hoyas but is into houseplants…
Id suggest some Hoyas that grow easily, look “different” yet pleasing to the eye (leaf and growstructure wise) for people who are not into Hoyas yet, good appetizers
If a friend or family member were to ask me which I would recommend to them, I think I would give them rooted plantlets of:
- Hoya Carnosa Wilbur Graves
- Hoya Caudata Sumatra
- Hoya Heushkeliana inner variegated
- Hoya Krohniana silver or Hoya Lacunosa Louisas silver or Hoya Rebecca
- Hoya Latifolia pot of gold
(Maybe Hoya Calycina, Hoya Flores Island UT-039 or Hoya UT-033)
And would recommend Hoya Multiflora 😊
