PLEASE TAKE MY MONEY !!!!! Dude, you've always been there since I don't know how long, answering my questions whether I was asking directly to you or not, you are one of the first filmmaker that I started to really follow back in the days. Thanks for that, for your time for your community. Its exactly the look I was looking for years, without having to invest in film camera
Brandon Li pulling all the stops again! Awesome video had no idea this existed til now. Do you have any plans on making any films in the near future? I would definitely pay to watch.
This is probably the best video using optimal choice of subjects to show off halation and bloom! I love the subject/background separation in some of these shots. Gotta check out Dehancer.
I agree rendering time makes it difficult for me to use this plugin, also not many camera supported in log , we must use generic rec 709maybe will improve soon but in the meantime I’ll keep using film convert nitrate
This video has EXCEEDED my expectations, BEYOND. I've been chasing the 16mm film look because I love the classic look, particularly from the 90s era. Though I still want to achieve that look, it's opening my eyes to realize that the look will be its most authentic by actually utilizing an actual 16mm film camera. But then I watched this video and realized something. Though the footage shot in this video is digital with a software to emulate film, there's still something very magical about this look. I think this is the look a lot of filmmakers would strive for because of it's filmic-digital expression. Digital with a filmic edge and vice versa. This look brings a whole new meaning to futuristic. But classically futuristic. If the film camera era was still booming today as much as it was over 20 years ago and beyond and then a more modern, digitalized look came along that made the footage look more cleaner, this would be the brainchild behind that creation. Your work is incredible on its own, but based on your filmmaking style Dehancer complements your work. This is an inspiration to me and now I know what look I'm going for now in a digital world. I don't have Dehancer, but in-body camera settings, the lens, and a diffuser filter is all I'll need before I do slight enhancements in post. Thanks Brandon!
2:07 shot is made by gimbal ? looks no post edit of stabilization ? as my shot with gimbal is always shaky, wonder if this is the same situation with your above shot.
For me the answer will be shooting with a minimal amount of lens diffusion like a 1/8 black pro mist and then subtly tweaking it with Dehancer in post. I will still be taking it off and on for stills/video but the diffusion is going to live on the front of my vari-ND which I take on and off anyway.
@@DSleep that totally makes sense. I’m going to give it a shot. Just got the Freewell magnetic filters so it should be way faster to pop on and off too
Very nice . Curious about something .What if you were able to show it on a real cinema screen , would it retain that quality at such a large blow up?Your work is so excellent
You can do all of this with the built in effects in Resolve and it will render much quicker... BUT it will take a lot of knowledge and tweaking to make it look the same. The render times are what put me off.
It’s subjective of course, but I think dehancer looks better because you can adjust more parameters such as preserving the original highlights under the bloom effect.
a lot of people now typically use extra glass filter to create that bloom effect , do you think the effect that dehancer creates with its bloom is up to par with the latter.
Seems like a great filmic plugin for mostly Neon like cinematic city scapes. Not sure how it would bode in more western grey and dull buildings. Lovely video! What lens was used?
Regarding bloom, I think Dehancer does a good job of replacing mist filters. It’s not 100% realistic but most people won’t notice, most of the time. Halation wouldn’t happen with any glass filter because it’s an artifact of film processing so you need to use Dehancer or the native Resolve halation fx.
Some people (film purists) don't get that making digital look like film isn't a bad thing. I mean if the exact same photons are going to enter your retina and trigger the exact same pattern of cones and rods, how does it even matter what medium you shot it on?
@@fullbars if you use windows, it's quite laggy. better optimised for mac. on my 3 year old system it drops down to 8-10 fps. i7-8700k, 1060 6 Gb, 16gb ram
Well this is very subjective, but I’ve tried Nitrate and all the film profiles looked muddy or just somehow “off”. Worse than the original camera colors. With Dehancer I feel like the film profiles maintain the quality of the original colors while still adding a different film look to them. Maybe I’m just not a great colorist or I didn’t use Nitrate correctly.
The first few shots definitely have a filmic look but the music and font choice definitely adds to that effect. But digital will never be able to replicate the texture of film. It's impossible. That's why the Nolans, Pfeisters and Tarantinos of the world still shoot on film. But nice work for sure.
Try looking at some A/B comparisons, most of the difference is very subtle and comes down to what we are accustomed to. Same with valve amplification for guitars.
Thanks for the video, just wish you mentioned the processing slow-down way earlier in the video, ideally before going into the rest of the details, as this can be a real deal breaker.
@@BrandonLiUnscripted odd. I'll have to do more tests because I found it to be the opposite. This is in davinci resolve though. Could potentially be different for each NLE
That is definitely not a correct blanket statement. You just need to use the right encoding, and Resolve definitely doesn't give a granular-enough control for it. In my process I export a max-quality export from Resolve (DNxHR444 at highest setting) and encode it via ffmpeg (myFFMPEG gives great GUI, Handbrake is a free alternative) with a grain-preserving tune (it's an actual inbuilt setting), at highest settings (444, 10-bit, Intra, highest bitrate), and this is the best compressed result you can currently get, other than going DNxHR or ProRes. Btw, upon multiple tests - uploading the actual HUGE DNxHR file to TH-cam still gives you the best result in terms of grain preservation (it's still terrible on YT, but it's the best you can get right now). If you don't have the option to upload very large files - a high quality H.265, like described above, will get you 80-90% of the way at 10% of the file size.
Thanks for the video and explanation Brandon. Here is a film look that I really like. it simply look like film even though it was shot on the first Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera. What do you think about it and how did they get this look? th-cam.com/video/K4aRg3EI22I/w-d-xo.html

Your ‘before’ footage looks amazing. Was that slog and graded?
Hi Brandon Li,
Thanks for this review.
What would you say the main differences between Dehancer and Look Designer are?
What are those lenses?
I would love to know the lenses used in this video
If you upload ProRes 422 codec to TH-cam you should be able to feel the grain. I understand that can be a bit overkill for most projects though.
They got to make a plugin for Lightroom. Ill buy that.
That is fantastic !
Thanks for the video. I was wondering did you switched to DaVinci Resolved? What are your thoughts about DR, specially compared to FCPX.

Just a gimbal in lock mode
how much better is dehancer for bloom compared to the standard glow that comes with resolve studio?
It’s subjective of course, but I think dehancer looks better because you can adjust more parameters such as preserving the original highlights under the bloom effect.
Interesting! Thank you for sharing. ✌️
have you switched to davinci from final cut? why?

I don’t think so

4:32 Why h.264? Isn't h.265 the least lossy of the two?
In my tests h265 erased some of the film grain even at high bitrate due to long gop compression
