brideshead revisited by Evelyn Waugh, Brighton Rock by Graham Greene, Alone in Berlin by Hans Fallada were three of my favourite reads of 2022!! can't wait to find some new favourites in 2023, one of them is two of your fantasy recommendations, City of Brass and The Name of The Wind!!! xx❤

Oooh, can you believe I haven't read any of those! I still need to read my first Evelyn Waugh at some point. And YAY that is so exciting about The City of Brass and The Name of the Wind - I hope you love them 😍

Ohio was one of my favs for 2022 too. I can still vividly remember all the characters and so many of the scenes almost a year after reading. Paradais is really high on my tbr, really enjoyed hearing your thoughts on it, I’m even more excited to get to it now!

I’ve only read Paradais from this list and really loved it even though it’s so difficult to read. I did see Melchor at an event talking about the book and she was a really interesting person. Thanks for the Ohio recommendation.

It's definitely a complex read! Oooh, I bet hearing her speak was interesting. She's got a new collection of short stories coming out this summer which I can't wait to get my hands on!

Ohio is such a great book. Other favourites of 2022 I come to think of are The Broken Earth Trilogy by N.K. Jemisin, The Colony by Audrey Magee, Water Shall Refuse Them by Lucie McKnight Hardy, The Strangers by Katherena Vermette (companion novel to The Break, just as good and which I recommend you read first), Address Unknown by Kathrine Kressmann Taylor, Parnassus on Wheels by Christopher Morley, Scarborough by Catherine Hernandez, The Yellow House by Emily O'Grady and Stamatia X by Effie Carr. I've never heard of the last two but both offer a kind of Greek tragedy vibe if you're into that sort of thing. How could I have missed Donal Ryan? The Queen of Dirt Island seems to scream my name.

Isn't it? I've seen The Colony around, but I haven't picked it up. So pleased to hear that you loved Water Shall Refuse Them - I think Lucie McKnight Hardy is amazing 😍 Thank you so much for all of these recs. I'm going to go do some researching on goodreads now haha! And yes, please read Queen of Dirt Island! It's absolutely wonderful x

You've reminded me about Marian Halcombe! She is such an amazing character - I was blown away by her bravery and loyalty and indignation. She is definitely on my list of favourite literary character of all time! I have also read The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins which was enjoyable, but not up to the level of The Woman in White unfortunately.
