I loved this show. Watched it every night. In the early 80s I had the opportunity to tour the studio. Couldn't believe how small the room was. I hope to see johnny in heaven one day.
He battled alcoholism for a long time. He admits to being a mean drunk and chased people away. He was such comic legend, its hard to picture him in any other fashion. God rest his soul.
Ken Sturm Even had a strained relationship with his sons. He had a bad temper when he drank. He drank often. Letterman got sober in the early 80's and the reason why Carson and him got along so well is that when they would get together, it was not centered around drinking like it was between McMahon and Carson.
We need someone like Johnny today, America need idols like Johnny. Instead the new generation have the likes of the Kardashians, who only got famous from a sex tape.. classless and shameless..
Sure. Imagine having opera singers on late night shows today? The Tonight Show had numerous opera singers What a shame that talent and the expectation of what talent is has eroded!
Damn right. Jay was good, Jimmy Fallon sucks, Johnny was extraordinary! The king of monologue. He was, and always will be the best. I wish i had all his shows on dvd.
Actually, the highest rated late night shows are in the following order, The Late Show w/Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel and dead last is Jimmy Fallon. It isn't a contest anymore. Jimmy Fallon only got the job because he was already under contract with NBC. Fact is there have been three hosts to succeed Carson and none of them have lasted. So, it doesn't take a genius to make the conclusion you have.
Thanks for sharing I really relate more with this show than what's out there today that's why I'm here now . Thank you for all the hard work getting this posted
Judith Blegen was a leading soprano with the Metropolitan Opera for many years, and she was a frequent guest on the Carson-era TONIGHT show. Her rendition of "O Holy Night" is profoundly moving.
I love the Toy Review. Still can't believe how crazy some dolls actually were back then. My favorite toy was Mr. Mouth. That looks like a fun toy to play with.
A little Known late-night fact was that Letterman pilfered away with that little licky doll....and had to later register as an offender in his home-state of Indiana...
Of the six hosts of NBC's "Tonight Show"-Steve Allen, Jack Paar, Johnny Carson, Jay Leno, Conan O'Brien, and Jimmy Fallon-Johnny Carson was the best-the most versatile; the most multi-talented; the most multi-faceted! Johnny was in a comedic league of his own!
I really lost it when she sang “...Truly He taught us to love one another, His law is love and His gospel is peace.” Beauty still exists & will prevail in this world!🙏😇🌅✨🌹✝️❤️
Ono e of Johnny's last shows he said we'd see him soon or down the line or something. I Always waited for him to come back on TV. No one had his timing, his facial... whatever it's called. He was SO funny.
And I thought Johnny was boring himself, bui, I often thought he had great guests. Also, Johnny was a good straight man and always laughed at his guests jokes.
Here's a nugget from a TV old-timer, @ 15:30 you'll see a flashing white transparent rectangle on the top right of the picture. This was a visual cue to affiliates that a commercial break was coming in 30 seconds, the breaks included national and local ad's. The show was recorded "live" in Burbank and NBC Rock City to be played out live to affiliates "live" at 11:30p local times, the local ad's were inserted in break "black holes" as the show was sent out from either net bases. These shows have the national ad's but the local break timings were edited out. Those cues weren't seen on most home tv's because of what was known as "pix safety/cutoff" which about 8% of what the camera sees around the edges you did not see at home. Many of these episodes are displayed "raster to raster" and you get to see what the camera op. and control room saw before it went out for air.
Great episode. I hold Christmas 1979 very dear and I was given Milky as a gift. Thank you for this episode. The Coke commercial gas been a favorite for a long time.
it's nice seeing these old commercials that don't have anything to do with erectile disfunction, bladder control, and attorneys suing the drug companies for the medications the FDA is approving with potentially fatal side effects.
Fantastic episode! Love the "New Products", always enjoyable David Letterman, even a wonderful Christmas hymn! And the commercials...really hitting all the childhood memories, this one. The Coca-Cola and "Charlie" perfume songs, Orson Welles' wine, James Garner and Mariette Hartley......
Thanks, Carson uploaders! Also, it would be OK and funny if you sometimes added the old rerun opening at the top with Ed's VO, "Stay tuned for an outstanding entertainment program, The Best of Carson!"
For "O Holy Night" this performance by the Heavenly Judith Blegen, is equalled by, only, the great Jussi Bjoerling! Glad to see both are on You Tube, and hope they STAY here.
43 years later, we are still buying our kids playdoh sets that are basically the exact same thing; crank the handle. Hair comes out. Same shape and everything. Ha.
Was the Tonight Show 1 1/2 hours back then? I know it was at one point, I thought it was in the 60's though. Things are so different in late night TV now. I like it better now but Carson was a legend. He was head and shoulders above Leno.
iceturkee1950 When Johnny renegociated his contrat with Fred Silvernman in 1980. Back to 60 minutes and full ownership of his show; his show is still property of his estate and family today.
Although classical music and commercial TV aren't meant for each other, classical musicians such as Pavarotti and Itzhak Perlman were frequent guests on the TONIGHT show during the Carson era. For me, the most powerful rendition of "O Holy Night" on the TONIGHT show was by Jackie Evancho during the Leno era.
The Tonight Show was an hour and a half long originally. They had a lot of time to fill. At Carson's insistence, they cut it down to 60 minutes starting in 1980.
One is inclined to believe Johnny had a mean streak after that video. Ed got the bra on him and he insisted he’d get on the talking thing to announce his weight to the audience. He has his evil moments 😂 funny throughout though 😄
something has gone wrong with the ads - I usually let them play, but the playback freezes at every ad break, and only a reload will resume playing - ouch.
Anybody know if these are the full and complete commercial breaks that aired at the time ??? Hard to believe that almost every break was only one minute in length, with only two commercials per break. Though I do still watch some "live" tv these days, it's significantly less than I used to watch (and quickly diminishing with each passing year)........the out of control commercials have just killed it for me. If I really want to watch a particular show, I wait until it's available on dvd, and watch it then. Haven't paid for satellite or cable in over 10 years, and don't really feel like I've missed too much.....
I loved this show. Watched it every night. In the early 80s I had the opportunity to tour the studio. Couldn't believe how small the room was.

The one and ONLY king of late night!!!!!
The new toys bit is one of my favorites! Johnny playing with the toys is hilarious 😂
He battled alcoholism for a long time. He admits to being a mean drunk and chased people away. He was such comic legend, its hard to picture him in any other fashion. God rest his soul.
K9 Momma for Abby Is that why he was divorced many times?

Sad how far night time entertainment has fallen... Thank you Mr Carson for the memories... No one will ever entertain America like you again!
We need someone like Johnny today, America need idols like Johnny. Instead the new generation have the likes of the Kardashians, who only got famous from a sex tape.. classless and shameless..
We all need a little more Johnny and Dave can’t cry anymore watching those 2.
In a documentary about Johnny someone said it best: "when Johnny left, he took the tonight show with him."
I believe it was Jerry Seinfeld who said that. And he was right. Great docu, by the way, King Of Late Night from 2012.
Agree, it’s not the same without Johnny AND Ed.
Definitely!! He made that show, and since he's been gone, the show isn't the same. Miss you Johnny!! 😢
I love this....and love that they show the original commercials.
Thank you for bringing back Johnny Carson!
Thank you!!
Sure. Imagine having opera singers on late night shows today? The Tonight Show had numerous opera singers What a shame that talent and the expectation of what talent is has eroded!
I didn't realize until I got older how lucky I was to have been exposed to so many different musical genres on the Tonight Show.
obsessed with the inclusion of the vintage commercials
Yeah adds a nice touch to it
Thank you for also including the commercials.
This is the Tonight Show that I remember. Best of luck to Jimmy Fallon, but there will never be another Johnny Carson.
Love Jimmy Fallon, never liked ugly, uncharming Jay Leno

Craig Gomez Ya he's ok but Fallon sucks! He's got some good guests, that's only because it's the Tonight Show. .
Aw yeah, here's Johnny!
Thank you so much, it's always great to see classic Carson!
We still love the johnny Carson show no matter how bad he may bomb.

It was great to see the Mego Corporation represented during the toy review.

Another Carson Classic!
Love Ed's laugh! 😂
Please release more complete episodes with new toy/products reviews with the original commercials! Best thing on You Tube!

The toy segment really brought back some memories. Wish I had one of those Gor helmets.
My Granny loved watching Johnny Carson this brings back memories. She followed Letterman after Johnny left she couldn't stand Leno.
I love Dave. Screw the haters. What a cool, simple and lovable guy he is
Part of the succèss was the chemistry of Johnny, Ed,& Doc. That is what IS MISSING w the other hosts
For an old nasty crank.

That creepy perfume commercial talking about not being far from inocence was on a par with the viagra commercials you're complaining about.
Dave was just a wee bit nervous with Johnny back then - just flew into his very rehearsed comedy bit. Love all those old commercials :)
