    Thank you for the video. I opened it up today to clear what I thought was a clogged impeller and it turned into it finally came apart and it was time to install the new one I had in the shop for year. It’s a Hayward and the diffuser would not allow me to use a strap wrench around the impeller and the inside I could use a smaller strap wrench on just came apart. By setting the armature in the vice I could then rotate the diffuser and all to work a larger strap wrench to remove it.
    Thanks!

    not really impressed that you didnt get it off in the video, lol. Won't putting the motor's shaft into a vice damage it? I'm not sure I want to take my motor apart since it is working and just have a leak near the shaft in the wet end, any advice?

    Thanks for the video. I am working on a Century pump and I noticed that there was a plastic center on the impeller that accepts a 15mm socket ,much easier to remove a stuck impeller with that feature.

    So you did this whole video and I still don't see the impeller off the motor... Afraid to break it? Lol I think so.

  •  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    holding the rotor in the vice that way is a "no, no". it will get scratched and possible break the magnets

  • @odonkev1
    @odonkev1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Make sure you are turning the impeller in the proper direction for removal. The impeller is designed to be self tightening on the motor shaft so that as the pump is loaded, the impeller doesn't come off of the shaft. Many pool pump motors, if not all, have left-handed threads for the impeller. The simplest way to determine the correct direction for removal is to hold the impeller and turn the shaft in the opposite direction it rotates while running.

    • @MrLonstar
      @MrLonstar 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Wrong, wrong wrong. Most impellers are right hand thread - lefty loosey, righty tighty.

    You should add a note to put some padding between the vice and the shaft to prevent marring.

  • @HateDietPepsi
    @HateDietPepsi ปีที่แล้ว

    Have you tried putting 2 hose clamps on the shaft side by side to prevent scratching the impeller and using a pipe wrench or hammer to tap it lose?: This is just too much work just to get an impeller off. If the motor is old, might as well replace that while you're at it.

    Hello, my name is Mark Ward and I have a Pentair 1 HP Pool Pump, I have taken the pump apart, the impeller was stuck, i was able to free it, however, it will run free when it is open, but, when I tighten the motor to the flange the pump will not spin, when I loosen the motor from the flange it runs great, the minute I tighten it. i will hum only.

  • @sdowney717

    put marine water resistant grease on the bearings, the end bells, all bolts, screws and the pump shaft and threads for the impeller when reassembling. Corrosion can be prevented, and then it all will come apart next time easily, a go easily together. The exposed pump shaft also rusts. I cleaned off the rust, primed it, greased it and slid heat shrink tubing it..
    And put some grease on the motor shell and end bells so they also slide together and slip apart easier.

    Would it be possible to shock the impeller loose with a sharp rap on the strap wrench handle? Sometimes things come loose with a jar when they are too tight for other methods.

    I would of wrapped my stator up to keep it from getting ruined from the vise but I do use more caution and maybe a little over board when it come to safety and me working on things spending money on things I screw up I don't like it regardless of who it belongs to

  • @MrLonstar
    @MrLonstar 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Not a good idea to clamp a stator in a vice without wrapping it in something to protect it. Another way to remove a frozen impeller is to cut/break the plastic impeller off. In the center of the plastic impeller is a brass nut, just use a wrench remove the nut. If it's tight, use a butane torch to heat the nut a bit...or even better, a torch with a can of mapp gas instead of butane. It burns hotter.

    LOL
    This was hilarious to watch. He is correct that a rubber strap wrench (as he calls it) is the best tool for the job on a plastic impeller. I would however recommend taking off the non drive end (NDE) cooling fan first..if it's not internal!, using a vice grip on the NDE shaft and then use the mentioned tool. Don't try to wrap it around the small part of impeller as displayed that sits inside wear ring of diffuser...Put it around outer circumference of impeller where vanes are and a sharp twist anti-clockwise will do the trick everytime.
    Hope this helps somebody out there.

    I replaced the bearings on my Flowmaster xp2 4 hp spa motor today. The rear end of the motor there is this spingy thing with a disc. In your video at point 5:28 you click it back in forth. When I replaced the bearing I broke a piece off that disc. When I re installed the spa it clicked on for a minute then shut off. Do I need to replace that part now that's it missing a piece? Could that be my problem?

    the impeller on my pl351 dually just spins, won't unscrew, i can hold the shaft from the other side to keep the armature from moving. and it will spin either direction, but won't unscrew. any thoughts?

    • @ThePumpGuys
      @ThePumpGuys  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah, you need to break it off, the impeller has a brass nut that is frozen on the shaft and now the brass nut is spinning inside the plastic impeller, so you have to break off the plastic impeller and then heat the brass nut a tiny bit while holding the shaft with vise grips and then spinning off the brass nut - you might have to read that twice but I have a video on this too
