Rumbleminze just released their Double Dragon NES to SNES port and wow is it now IMO the best version of the original Double Dragon you could possibly play and it works on MiSTer FPGA! Retro gaming news incoming as this is just an awesome new way to play Double Dragon on SNES plus it works great on the MiSTer FPGA SNES core as that has MSU-1 enhancements in FPGA! and this is after Rumbleminze released his Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers SNES port that was MSU-1 enhanced!

The Super Nintendo was SUPPOSED to have a CD-ROM attachment known as the SNES CD...but alas that was cancelled. So what did someone do? They created a variation of the same technology in software and FPGA code so we NOW HAVE FULL MOTION VIDEO AND CD QUALITY AUDIO ON THE MiSTer FPGA SNES CORE! How's that for cool retro gaming fun?

We used to call this "Single Dragon" back in the day, It was largely inferior to the SMS version which also had 2 player. Not sure why Arc Systrem Works keeps trying to retcon Double Dragon as the NES series in their collections. I guess they don't have the licence to every version.

Double Dragon II is the sauce. Still have some love for the original especially since there are ways to cheese through a run but loving this influx of nes to snes conversions. My dream is dragon warrior IV with orchestral OST and party control but I know that would be a massive lift.

I like the original music better. Spacing and timing of your kicks, because punching is useless, is so important. Love the game, it's hard, but nostalgic for me!

I think you really had to be around when Double Dragon came out to appreciate it. I didn't start playing games until late 91-early 92, and by that time, we had stuff like Final Fight, Streets of Rage, TMNT-in Time, etc.
For me personally, it's really difficult to go back to any beat 'em ups before the original Streets of Rage. Even the first TMNT arcade game, I'm not a fan of. I love TMNT; they are more or less my earliest memories, but that game doesn't do anything for me.
It's the same with Double Dragon. I try over and over to get into the series, but I just can't connect with it.

The original sound much better, but there is nothing stopping using MSU1 for enhancing the original synth audio, they could use it to double or more the channels to give a much richer soundstage and add EQ and some extra drums or other instruments, better yet, use it for converted HQ PCM recordings of the standard sampled SNES audio converted to full-fat HQ MIDI, just listen to how good Super Mario World MSU-1 sounds in MIDI, something like the Roland SC-88 Pro MKII, all the best SNES games with 128 note polyphony MIDI2 HQ PCM recording would be incredible, there is also the option of remaking brand new MIDI 2.0 soundtracks with full-fat 256 note polyphony, I would firkin love to hear new 80s style MIDI synth soundtracks for SNES games on top of enhanced MIDI versions of the original soundtracks, I also love tracker music, this can sound incredible with a good audio DAC & AMP, but requires some decent CPU juice to process properly, but there is now available BAZZ's SNES Tracker, which produces really nice sounds, in fact, this might be by far the best use case of MSU-1 soundtracks, I'd love to see MIDI and SNES Tracker soundtracks for some of the best SNES games.

The MSU1 projects are definitely hit and miss. Some modders assemble amazing soundtracks, while others just slap together a few low quality remixes and send it off as a finished product. We just have to hope for the best

I'd say that NES Double Draon's probably one of the worst ports of the game that's still playable. Having to earn your moves just makes it more of a slog. Cool that it's gotten a new port though. I know a lot of people love this one for whatever reason.
