OMG! The recompilation project is the best thing to ever happen to the N64 scenario. And I say that thinking about the MiSTer core. What a year to be a N64 fan!
It’s def been a huge bonus to us all
This looks amazing! This recompilation ability is going to create so many amazing updates for our classic favourites.
It’s a fun, newer method that’s going to be a lot of fun in the next couple years
This is amazing! I'm am praying that one day we could get a N64 decompilation for Mischief Makers, Quake 64, Doom 64 (I know we have the official remaster but I'm still curious), both Castlevania 64 games, F-Zero X, Jet Force Gemini, Sin & Punishment, and Star Fox 64!
I’m most excited about a potential Castlevania 64
aidyn chronicles at full 60 fps would be insane. a whole new generation of people could enjoy it.
Would be pretty cool to see the Extreme-G series run at 60fps one day.
That one could use some extra frames for sure
OK now I have to go listen to the OST.
Yeah you do
Hell yeah brother!
Had that game I remember long stretches then smashing into the walls over amd over.
Thanks for showing this off, just uploaded one of my favorite Inengine glitches using this recompile on my channel.
Nice. Glitched the same way?
I had a fair bit of fun playing this when I downloaded a build back in October. I need to try a newer build. Perfect Dark remains one of my favorite games of all time. But, life hasn't been very kind at all this year...well, really since around Thanksgiving. Anyways, as always I enjoyed the video!
Oh no. Hope everything is ok
We get it, you get locked 60fps through the entire game 😆
Stoked to see more decompilations/recompilations!
Well that’s the entire point lol
This is basically what is was like playing Perfect Dark back in the day relative to its time for me. In my minds eye I didn't at all see low resolution or low frame rate and so on, it was just cutting edge stuff and one of the best fps games ever made. Also, you could actually officially play with dual analogue controls back in the day on real N64 with the standard controllers too, and that's how I used to play it. This version basically brings what's in my minds eye into reality. It's a "exactly how I remember it" kind of thing. Good stuff.
It is funny back then the framerate was fine. Now it’s rough. Hindsight
@@VideoGameEsoterica Yeah, that's why the time and context is very important. Back then when this game was new and all its details were truly relevant, it was basically as good as we got on any home console and we loved it. IGN even gave it a 9.8 despite some acknowledged frame rate dips, which shows how highly it was viewed in the context of its time*. Whereas now we ideally want a min of 1080p, 60fps, and standard dual analogue or mouse and keyboard, etc. And the great thing is both are true to their time, so we win all round. We got a peak console fps experience in the '90s, and now we have a lovely wee version of it today that's a great modern revist to a classic era fps game with a few essential tweaks and QoL additions here and there to make it relevant again. Pretty awesome really. :D
"There are a lot of games that ride the hype train only to disappoint upon arrival, but Perfect Dark isn't one of them. Rare's intelligent 3D shooter features amazing graphics, loads of in-game options, a cooperative mode, a counter-operative mode, extensive bot setups, and a the most well-rounded multiplayer mode ever to grace Nintendo 64. All of these great features combined work to distance this game from all other console first-person shooters out there. In fact, my biggest and only gripe with the game is its sometimes sluggish framerate, which even I, an admitted fluidity junkie, have no problem overlooking as the experience is otherwise so much fun. GoldenEye has remained unbeatable as the best home-console first-person shooter for three years now. It's only right that the game that finally dethrones the classic comes from the same team that made Bond a hit to begin with. Hats off to Rare for delaying the product long enough to 'Perfect' it. And sorry, I couldn't resist. Bottom line: If you don't own Perfect Dark, you don't deserve to own a Nintendo 64 either." - IGN

It's kinda mind boggling when you think of it as a home console fps game in the context of that era.
In almost two decades of talking about this game online, you are, I think the first other person I've ever run across that knows about the dual analog support (GoldenEye has it too). I remember discovering it, it was the first time I played dual analog on a console and it was fantastic, especially being able to strafe in targeting mode, and sneak up on people in the stealth missions on perfect agent.
I need a recomp of WinBack in my life.
Most underrated game ever.
You misspelled Hybrid Heaven
@@VideoGameEsotericaNo you should feel bad.
Lol
@@VideoGameEsoterica Both are amazing. Man, I miss Hybrid Heaven. Its multiplayer was a blast.
So there are three N64 games that are in my library that have been recompiled that have recently been brought to my attention thanks to you, those being the two Zelda games and now Perfect Dark. Good stuff!
Now what games I'd REALLY like to see get the same treatment are Resident Evil 2 (M. Bison: "OF COURSE!"), Super Smash Bros. (need I say more?), Spider-Man 2000 (those silly slideshow cutscenes have a specual place in my heart, although the game that'a attached to them is also pretty fun), the Turok games (all of them), and Star Fox 64 (DO A BARREL ROLL). I'd love to see the N64's entire library get this treatmenr eventually so we can play optimized ports of every single game in said library, but if there's a handful of games in particular I'd REALLY like to see get tackled it'd be the ones I just listed.
Imagine, having a PC port of a version of RE2 that has a built-in randomizer mode that WON'T risk crashing your game... It's be like finding a pot of gold and a bag of potato chips at the end of a rainbow for me.
I’d love to see them all recompiled at some point. Just a tool that can do it for the library
GOG is porting the original pc versions of the resident evil trilogy to modern hardware.
I just saw that in the news
@SuperNESmanJr Well holy crap, looks like Capcom's FINALLY giving us old-school fans something we've been asking for! Now I wonder if they'll do something about their older spin-off games...
One thing I'd like to see eventually is a Dinosaur Planet decompilation. However, right now, I'd rather the community try to get the game fully working on the original hardware first. It was never officially finished and still has many freezes due to memory allocation. The community has been hard at work ever since the leaked rom surfaced.
Yes I think it would need a finished version before anything else happens with it
2:10 Just a quick point of clarification, you can remap the controls if you want to change them. Great video, thanks for taking the time to make it!
👍
Honestly, this is the way I want to play N64 moving forward. No more "emulation" as we say. MiSTer is a huge accomplishment, but I'm really hoping the whole N64 library gets this treatment eventually.
I’m sure it will in time. Might be a couple years though
Learning about this project from your video. Wow. Loved this game back in the day and can’t wait to try it again.
The time to try is now :)
I can't wait to see Graslu00 to do a Playthough/Longplay of this incredible patch!
Would be fun for sure
Recomp and decompliation need to make it to all older games and consoles
I’m sure they will in due course
@@VideoGameEsoterica yes yes
I want a decompile of Pokemon Stadium 1 and 2, Bomberman Hero, and Conkers BFD
Bomberman Hero yes please
aidyn chronicles needs that 60fps love. one of my top favorite games of all time
2:40 "and as we walkthrough Chicago here the city I live in, I can tell you it looks nothing like this"
What do you mean? This is Chicago.....last year.
I must’ve missed it 🤣
Looks great-I’m excited to see how multiplayer looks, and I think I’m speaking for many of us.
Multiplayer is a huge part of the game for sure
It works right now
Heyyy, fellow Chicagoan here!
And yeah, the Chicago: Stealth level NEVER looked like actual Chicago, but tbh they kinda got the vibe lol
Just tell me how many lines of code I have to type, and how many flaming hoops with clowns juggling chainsaws, I had to jump through.
Oh... It just runs... K
Haha
These are the things I need in my life for sure
And now you have them :)
God, I am going to sound so ungrateful and I don't mean to - but after playing MM Recomp with interpolated frames, I can really see how much of an improvement that is. Hopefully we can get more decomps that add this in. The cutscenes just look *off* at 60fps, because they were obviously animated to be running around 25
Just the diff between an unlocked frame rate and a locked one but yeah I get it
@@VideoGameEsoterica Hey! I have a project id like to discuss with you but your DM's are locked on Twitter and your discord link isn't working. What's the best way to contact you?
I would love to see an Xbox Live Arcade graphics pack for this with 60fps and modern controls.
I would certainly play it!
I've known about this for quite a while and toyed around with it for a bit. The only thing I knew prior to this was Ship of Harkinian.
As for this one: it's basically perfect in that "original but enhanced" ethos and updates are infrequent by now. I would like for others to fork it and add further stuff, like model and texture replacements.
I’m sure it could be forked in the future
I hope we see proper 16:9 support and up to six-player local deathmatch modded in to these PC/Linux ports at some point. For that matter, I sincerely hope we see more recompiled N64 games and recompilation projects for other video game consoles, eg: SNES, GameCube, PS1, etc.
It's certainly interesting that we're getting so many of these decomp N64 games before PS1, SNES, or any seemingly simpler consoles
Must just be what people are into? Not sure
Wasn't there a Nitendo dump that provided insight?
Not sure on that
This looks awesome. I really enjoyed the Xbox 360 remastered version of this but I never feel like getting out the 360 to play it.
My 360 usually isn’t hooked up either
It’s in Rare Replay which works on Series X.
Looks pretty good. Does it work on an ed64 plus? Just bought an N64 and was thinking of picking one up
No this won’t work on real hardware
I was never too happy with the N64's controls, so I should give this a try sometime!
A LOT easier than using an N64 controller that’s for sure
It's not widescreen? I imagine there will be an update for that so I'll wait until then.
I’d assume so
Is it possible to decompile Gauntlet Legends? I really want to play that game natively on my Desktops and mini PCs
Everything CAN be decompiled. It just needs to be done
Can you play it with Mouse and Keyboard?
Anything really
So where might one go to play this? I tried finding it and am not able to.
It’s on GitHub. Just search perfect dark decompiled GitHub
If whoever owns this just did exactly this and released it on Steam for $10 they'd make millions of dollars
I wish I could make millions that easily
Looks fantastic. Might we see a Nintendo DMCA?
Nothing really to DMCA. It’s new code
This is cool. Are they easy to get running on Steam Deck? Maybe a tutorial idea?
Haven’t tried deck yet
Huh, I guess I should check these out sometime.
Def should
I can see Golden Eye coming next
I genuinely hope so
First I am hearing about this! Does it work on Steam Deck?
With proton it should. I can’t remember if there was a Linux build
m/k??? that'd be the killer feature for me for any FPS.
I didn't own an n64 back in the day tho. I turned PC gamer around the time of Quake 1. I knew of all these n64 FPSs, but I only played them for an hour or so each at friends houses.
It took me too long to figure out that meant mouse and keyboard 🤣
edit: AH this is a port from a manual decomp. nice :D
for some reason I thought it might have been from the recomp project
So the turbo core is done-done?
Done done
So would it play better than the XBLA game?
V similar vibes
I have been waiting for a redo of PD for years and this looks great!
It’s my fave N64 game but the original controls are just soo bad now!
Glad you can use modern controls, But have they fixed the snap to centre aiming to?
I can’t remember on snap to center
@@VideoGameEsoterica ah well will have to try it and see.
Thats the worst part of the original controls! Just no place for that shiz in this day and age lol
I disagree. XBLA version emulated with Xenia (at 4k) and using Steam to remove the deadzone is the perfect version.
The PC recompile has the most potential with how much it can improve and be added to though.
So we have two perfects then :)
Diddy Kong Racing.. Banjo.. is needed.
I prefer only minor improvements and an option for the CRT Look.
Banjo is high on my list too
I only played the Xbox version so this was a fun curiosity
It’s a good time for sure
i wonder if this port would be good on wii with the aiming system from that game...
Maybe? 🤷🏻♂️
Any way to use the XBox 360 assets with the PC Port?
Anything is possible
recompilation of Doom 64 and of course Zelda Ocarina of Time - I mean why they did Majoras mask in the first place baffles me LoL
Just what the person probably loved the most
Because it's the better game
It would be cool if there was a way to look around with the right stick but aim the weapon with gyro.
Might break my brain haha
@@VideoGameEsoterica Lol think of it as a mobile duck hunt.
I can help you with pronunciation, this is based on an old meme lol. "figgis-fiddis" is the original (fgsfds), so this would be "figgis-fiddis-figgis" (fgsfdsfgs)
Haha deep cut lore
Trying to get this to play with an n64 switch wireless controller but can't get c buttons to strafe or the z trigger to fire. Anyone know how? Thanks
Which controller?
@@VideoGameEsoterica the switch n64 nso controller connected to pc. It works fine default with Ship of Harkinian but buttons seem to no input on this even when n64 controller is selected in the menu.
Odd. Haven’t heard of that issue
@@VideoGameEsoterica so you know it's possible to play with that controller fine? Ffs
edit: upon checking the key bindings in the extended menu nothing was bound to those buttons...strange. all working now.
Finally recomp games coming and it's not Zelda!
Always fun to have more
Waiting for someone to do Wave Race 64
I've got to play this on my Sony G520, my days, we are starting to get cream of the crop options now for all the best 90s games, if only these decompiled games weren't X86 Windows/Linux only though (and available for ARM & RISC-C), at least it's i686 Windows, which is much lower latency than Windows 10/11, should be able to squeeze sub 5ms out of it @ 144Hz/FPS (it can do up to 240 FPS), my Windows 7 Embedded gaming PC has seriously fast frame times and input fidelity that spanks the pants of my Windows 10 LTSB gaming rig, I have an Nvidia Quadro M6000 24GB (the last GPU with a native analogue RAMDAC) and Intel i7 7700K binned and soldered with a copper shim, ultra low latency DDR4 @ CL12 and a Gigabyte i-RAM RAMDISK, I can get sub 2ms frame-times with my Sony G520 CRT monitor and a low latency USB encoder gamepad, that kind of input-fidelity makes gameplay 1000 times more addictive and enjoyable, getting PC games down to pre gen 5 latency levels is really hard, but possible with the right equipment, even if you have to disable the audio, which can shave a few ms off, I don't like doing that though (avoid using onboard codecs like the plague, use ASIO drivers on a decent sound card or DAC).
It’s never been a better time to be a fan of these games than it is now
Having fun I see VGE? 8^)
Anthony..
Who me? Never
The nintendo switch 2 is gonna have alot of remastered games
Oh I’m sure
I’ve tried to change the internal resolution higher in the .ini file but it never seems to work. The game still runs 640x480.
Odd. Changes should persist
@@VideoGameEsoterica Unless I’m doing something wrong. No clue. But I’d love to run it in 4K.
I’ll check next time I’m in my office
@@VideoGameEsoterica Awesome, thanks!
Blimey, it looks like it’s running on an Xbox 360 or something😳
And that’s a bad thing?
@@VideoGameEsoterica No it looks amazing!
Nintendo lawyers are furiously winding up their spin machine on how to DMCA this..
Considering it’s all new code they’d have to straight up lie
Why Nintendo lawyers instead of MS lawyers?
Because MS generally doesn’t care and Nintendo WOULD go look for usage of the SDK in the project
@@VideoGameEsoterica shhhh you'll give them ideas...
@@lmk10000 VGE's response plus the zelda one too
We need mouse and keyboard support and widescreen hack
I’m sure more features will come eventually
Netplay would be nice now.
Maybe in the future
Been playing it on switch and I still think the controls hold up, it’s just the aiming that fights you that’s annoying
The aiming really does fight you too much
As long as we can keep Nintendo away from these projects. It's hard to know what they'll go after now.
I don’t know if there is anything here for them to attempt to go after
recompiled, not decompiled
change the title
It’s a decomp project that was recompiled. So it’s both

Do a video on Mario Kart 64 Decomp and Mario 64 etc
One of these days
I used to get insane motion sickness from the low framerates of this and Turok 2 as a kid but I toughed it out because I was really into them.
Thank god for improved framerates. This is one of my favorite FPS. I have high hopes the new one will be good because Deus Ex with parkour sounds excellent on paper.
Perfect Dark was always a light immersive sim in hindsight.
Def games that benefit from high frame rates. They were slideshows back in the day
7:25 shiggy
The original version played on original hardware using a period appropriate television is the perfect version and in my opinion the only legitimate way to play if you want to correctly honour the legacy of the developers
I find all ways to play to be fine so long as people keep playing. And it’s not like I don’t own a N64 with a CRT and a copy of the game. It’s right next to me
Need GE007 ...
can these decompilations work on an r36s or low powered linux arm consoles? yes please showcase more of them as they arrive!
Looks good but the xbox remaster is miles better in every aspect
It’s good to have options
I'll pick this up once they've applied the 360 remaster textures.
Hopefully soon
If they implement ray tracing this will be the version to play. Until then Rare Replay version is the version to play.
Both the version to play :) we can have two
i hope nintendo can't come after stuff like this. also worried about romhacks on that topic
So far they haven’t. Let’s hope it stays that way

And it’s not even finished
