    It's a shame this was cancelled after only one episode, as I was looking forward to seeing Reinhard Heydrich in subsequent ones. No I wasn't really, but the character of Heydrich apparently did feature in the un-televised episodes. What on earth were they thinking?

    I can't believe Patrick Cargill played Chamberlain. He was a well respected actor he wrote the most commercially successfull Carry on film of all time as well as appearing in countless films and tv shows including the sitcom Father dear Father. Sad to think this was probably his last role.

    Can you believe the Exec Producer was Paul Jackson? He was involved in and responsible for some great TV, including TOTP, Steptoe and Son, Blankety Blank, The Two Ronnies, Three of a Kind and The Young Ones. In '96 he became Head of BBC Entertainment and then Controller of BBC Entertainment, bringing shows such as The Royle Family, Marion and Geoff and The Office. He was even the one to bring Ant & Dec to prime time TV. So this is surely one for his CV! (resume) Haha

    The "Hoochie coochie coochie smoochie smoochie smoochie" bit is pretty funny. Apart from that, this concept had great potential which they failed to live up to in this episode. Maybe it would have gotten better like so many shows do. Then again, maybe it would just have been more of the same. Great minds would like to know, but I doubt we'll ever unearth more of it.

    Whilst it was deemed a merger it was really a takeover by Sky as BSB was losing oodles of cash (even more than Sky) . BSB was meant to be a monopoly with a government licence to broadcast but as no one owns space Murdoch just leased transponders on another satellite. BSB was technically superior to Sky (DMAC vs PAL) but got beaten to air by about a year due to the technical challenges of having to use (as stipulated by their government licence) the DMAC system and having to launch it's own satellite .
    Both were spending fortunes particuarly on movies (of course Murdoch had the advantage of owning 20th Century Fox) but BSB were doomed from the moment Murdoch (who had bet his own empire on Sky) got on air first and used his newspaper empire to prop it up. This is probably the show BSB is known for although their longest lasting influence was their sports channel that became Sky Sports (with lots of the same people) and changed sports broadcasting over here.
    The other thing they are known for is their 'squarial' satellite dish (that you still see on the odd building) that was another factor in their technical delays indeed when they did the press launch they just painted a bit of wood as they hadn't worked out how to make them!

    • @MrVidification

    • @flatoutflatbroke
      @flatoutflatbroke 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mentaldavethefirst The thing with ITV Digital (nee OnDigital) was Sky were meant to be part of it and thus Sky Sports etc. was going to be wholesaled to them at a discount but the regulators told them they couldn't and therefore Murdoch sought to crush them by offering free Sky boxes and charging ON/ITV Digital full market rate for his channels.
      If you believe on fate/bad omens both BSB and On/ITV DIgital were based in the same building (Marco Polo house).

    • @flatoutflatbroke
      @flatoutflatbroke 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MrVidification Yeah that was the notional nod to the merger (it wasn't until 2014 that they became just Sky), but that was about it as everything got absorbed into Sky and they stopped simulcasting on BSB's Marco Polo satellite at the end of 1992 and sold it off.

    BSB was a train wreck. It had financial woes during its creation, launch delays, incompetent management, overambitious new technology for the time, a sky high bill from buying movie rights, and, oh yeah, shit programming. And they were up against a rival company run by Rupert Murdoch. They didn't stand a chance.
    As if that wasn't bad enough, Galaxy also brought us a game show that came straight out of the '50s - Wife of the Week. Housewives did chores competitively. There were daily winners, who on Friday faced each other to be crowned Wife of the Week. And what did she win? A Wife of the Week Rolling Pin! Hosted by one of Britain's best loved entertainers, Christopher Biggins. I hope to God he only did it for the money.

      Well Noah said on a video yesterday that he thought it was an American cast, so they can't be that bad. In fact most Americans don't even realise when an English actor is playing an American. Most still think think Hugh Laurie is American until they see him with Stephen Fry.

    • @mikeking7710
      @mikeking7710 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HighHoeKermit that's true today, but in the past, British actors doing various American accents were often spotted rather quickly, just as Americans doing British accents could be picked out as well back then. The first that I ever heard do a truly accurate American accent was Tracey Ullman on her 1980's TV show, where she did a variety of different American accents, all quite convincingly. But I knew she was British. Others that I didn't know were British before first hearing their American accents were of course Laurie, and also Mark Addy and Alfred Molina. I first saw Addy in Still Standing with Jamie Gertz, and I first saw Molina in Maverick and Dudley Do-Right in which I thought he was an American actor doing a comically bad English accent for Snidely Whiplash.

    I actually don't think it's that bad. Seems to be the type of comedy that would split on generational lines but then lots of the early scripts from Only Fools and Horses definitely wouldn't fly by modern standards yet it wasn't offensive. And humour level isn't that poor, I mean, shit like Derek got more than one series and that was unfunny and offensive.

      modern standards = what 'upsets' social media users, who do not reflect the public as a whole, yet receives attention from the main media as a result, therefore influencing more of the majority. The power of social media! I believe a few early only fools episodes are never shown today due to their slang references to ethnicity and similar. This is still too much for most channels as they don't want social media backlash and a fall in reputation

      "It's just a joke" is a common cry Yeah? Why is it the joke always targets a minority group?
      Modern standards just don't think it funny to marginalise a minority group and subject them to mockery, ridicule, or stereotype. Simple as that.

      @@mentaldavethefirst The show above targeted a historical leader and stereotypes all americans. What are you watching that is 'always targeting a minority'? That sounds like the real nonsense, unless you can give examples. Slang terms (eg for one or two ethnic groups in a couple of early only fools) were very few and never used as the basis of any joke, nor used to ridicule. They were shortcut terms that referenced country. The real issue is when the same or similar words are eventually taken up by racists, and the words end up having a more negative connotation.
      It wasn't a US comedy. The main cast were always the butt of the joke, the characters that sought success always messed things up (bar the last series).
      Yes, modern standards are to find something to complain about in an over generalised fashion, which does abolutely nothing to resolve anything. Without calm dialogue, online or face to face, nothing is ever resolved, divisions arise, and everybody with alternate viewpoints ends up as they do online, shouting with their fingers in their ears. Social media has more power and influence than you seem to realise, for all people

      In one episodes Del makes a quip to an Asian pub patron about having seen his wife who appears to have a terrible spot on her forehead. In another Slater makes a joke that he is now at an age where he is so unattractive that even gay (except he doesn't use the word gay) people don't fancy him - the tired trope that gay people are more promiscuous. In another episode Del jokes to Rodney that due to the presence of gay people that have to dance with their backs to the wall.
      There is three examples off the top of my head.

    • @MrVidification
      @MrVidification 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mentaldavethefirst None of those are slang terminology, but what is deemed as offensive or light hearted depends on context and individual intepretation. Stereotyping is not necessarily racist, and prejudice doesn't have to be positive or negative. The first and last joke may make fun of the central characters more given they have no or limited knowledge of the subjects at hand. The gay jokes you mention don't target any ethnicity and wouldn't have been so tired in the 80s, or even 90s, and the level of acceptability has changed a lot (in the main media and social media at least-less so when it comes to people of most faiths, or even within some asian communities). You can of course debate that certain jokes are written with a specific type of audience in mind, but you would have to question the writers to find out the truth. Fairly modern shows post 2000 such as south park have 'gotten away' with a lot more regarding making fun of everything and anything. Aside from being animated, the popularity of a show can help with the level of acceptability. The real problems start when people do not have the ability to occasionally laugh at themselves, but there are few tv shows made to truly only make fun of others

      He did, actually. Indeed, most of the cast went on to have very successful careers - apart from Patrick Cargill, who played Neville Chamberlain. He'd already had a long and successful career as a character actor before this was made, and this was his last gig before he died a few years later.
