Great job, you were lucky to get it done before the DVLA brought in new rules. Needs to be a high top, 2 windows at lest on one side alone camper van detailing on outside paint awning rail etc.
Hi, I am not quite sure why you would ask such a question. There are no set dimensions for any custom builds, you make it up as you go like I did. You make it all to your requirements. Anyway, I gutted it all out and started again.
Hi Alan. First off I got my van for private use and not for work when I retired. So when I started doing bits on the van it was just to make it how I wanted it. But to answer your question, the insurance cost dropped by 2/3 once it was registered as a motor caravan , then there is the fact that a panel van is restricted on speed limits, as a motor caravan you can legally do the national speed limit. One last thing was that as a van my insurance DID NOT cover me to drive other vehicles but as a motor caravan my insurance now does. Hope this answers your question.
I think you will find that I actually say in the video that I haven't fitted a split charger or a solar panel I just charge the battery when I need to. It's something I need to do at some time. 😁
Hi thanks for the comments. Its not a problem not being able to carry people in the back, its just me and my wife. The road tax stays the same as it was. But my insurance dropped at least 60% . As far as the MOT goes I don't know yet, its going in for its first MOT next Thursday.
@@raygibbins thanks, is that because of the up and over door or would it still not fit even with barn doors on the garage? I ask because I want one but where I am with tricky parking it would have to fit in my garage in a block. Thanks again
@@Fromatic . Yes the up and over door makes it to low for the van, it would probably fit width wise but you would need to be quite slim to get out which I am not. 😊
@@raygibbins thanks for the information that sounds promising, I am already resigned to the idea that if it does fit through the opening with barn doors, that I'd have to drive it in forwards and get in/out via the back doors of the van which I could live with 👍
No lining on panels or the roof, I think you will have trouble with condensation and cold also road noise You are very lucky to get registered as a camper , Not so easy now
Thanks for your comment, this video was made in July 2018, it was a video showing that at the time these were the minimum requirements to get it reclassified. I never started out to make into a campervan it just happened that way. I have since made some changes.
Nicely done!
Really good video Ray , it is certainly a design that could really work well for lots of van / campervan owners.
Thanks for sharing.
Paul
Absolutely brilliant ... thank you.
👍

Great video! Thanks for the info :)
I hope it helps.
Perfect setup Ray if like me on a budget ,was the leisure battery set up a requirement for motor caravan re classification ?
Hi. No it wasn't, I added that so I could run the led lighting and the 12v power sockets I fitted.
Very nice. Did the tax cost change after the re-register?
Hi. No the road tax stayed the same but the insurance was two thirds cheaper.
Hi Ray would you have the kindness to send the dimensions of your installation?

Hi Ray, what are the benefits of it being a camper and not light goods.
Regards
Alan

Ray Gibbins Thanks Ray that's good to know 👍
Can i ask if you had to fit a smart relay? I know a simple split charge system is very cheap but only works with the older Vivaros.

Hey Ray, great and simple! Is the length of the elastic tube from the gas bottle to the cooker legal? I recall some max 75cm limitation.
Hi. I have slightly modified it since I made this video. The gas pipe is a lot shorter now.
So you have a massive box with a camping stove?
Basicly
Fantastic job but shame that you can’t carry passengers in the back. Is the tax cheaper when classed as a motor home & are the mot rules different 👍🏻

does the van fit into the garages?
Hi. No it won't fit in my garage.
