The main is kalbi, which is specifically Korean-style ribs (as a loan word from Korean, it is written in katakana on the package). The funny thing is that it's described as 中華風 (chukafuu) or Chinese-style. So it's Chinese-style, Korean-style ribs.
The dried round bits in the miso is usually fried tofu or Kamaboko ( Fish paste dough). Both Very tasty and nice texture. The red rice is mochi rice with red beans and wieners. Another great meal Thank you for the awesome review.

There are alcohols made from rice. With a splash of vinegar you can keep rice fine in a closed type rice cooker for up to three day's. Note that it does not work with a glass top rice cooker because of the vent hole. I wouldn't be that worried about rice going off quickly. Rice balls can be made in the morning and eatan for lunch or dinner without refrigeration depending on what you put in it's center.
I agree I prefer some rations over any gourmet food. These JSDF are amazing very dynamic flavors. Awesome Review Stickyfingaz glad to see you back.

The US Army overloads the MRE's for a winter combat scenario (or used to then) so we found in the Gulf War we had to really cut back. Which created some trading opportunities for the different packs left over, thanks!

Great review Sticky! There's not much in the ration but the food looked really good, and the menu list is pretty damn long. Rachael Sunshine sent me one of these and i thought it was great. I'm also a big fan of miso soup and make it from scratch when i have the time. I get a low sodium instant miso soup off of Amazon when i am short on time that tastes pretty good. Thanks for sharing!

Interesting to see that the German EPAs aren't the last ones still packaged in anachronistic cardboard boxes.
Or was this just how the store where you bought it shipped it to you and the military ration is usually packed in a plastic bag, like most nowadays?
The original German EPA still packed in the simple grey cardboxes. The Bundeswehr bought some plastic bag packed mre for the soldiers, because they could Not produce as much EPA as needed in the field. So the grey cardboxes are still allive.
I've never tried the miso soup packets but I have tried a few of the noodles miso cups soups and they were very good in my opinion. Are these Japanese rations easy to find? Are they very expensive. This looks very good. What was the mistake here

I've looked everywhere trying to find out what happened, why can't you recommend the seller?. Nothing in the community tab....what was the mistake he made?
My package was gutted by customs.. I contacted the seller and he completely ghosted me. The least he could’ve done is replied and said something

Those ‘bits’ are either tofu skin or fish cake… hard to tell not seeing it up close
But why would tofu skin or fish cake be ring shaped? At 9:28 you get a closer look and as it seems, there are different sizes of rings, which would speak for it being chopped squid. If it were some paste that gets pressed or extruded into shape, there would be no reason to go through the trouble of making it into rings, especially not different sizes of rings.
@@TrangleC tofu skin when made comes in sheets like paper and sometimes rolled into circular tubes and since it's miso soup you can safely assume it's tofu because it's usually served with green onions and tofu (in various forms i.e. tofu skin, silken tofu cubes etc.)
Close....it's wheat cake (yaki-fu), which is added similar to a cracker or crouton- adds texture, soaks up flavor which would be dashi causing any sort of 'fish' flavors.
Specifically, that's Nagatanien brand miso soup, not as often sold at import shops as Kikkoman or Marukome, although they do have an English website where ingredients/pictures to confirm can be found.
@@RogueA007 if I saw the label close up I could say for certain. I’m still betting it’s tofu skin since authentic miso soup always has tofu in it.
@@blueclothes1 I can read the branding and important bits around 1:09 - Nagatanien 'Yuuge' miso soup, that comes in a paste packet (調味みそ) , then the ingredient package (具), and this packaging is known as "raw type" (生タイプ). Stick [ 永谷園 生タイプみそ汁 ゆうげ ] into Google, pull the ingredient list from Nagatanien's official website and/or Amazon Japan (which also included user pics of the product):
調味みそ（米みそ（国内製造）、昆布エキス、鰹節粉、食塩／酒精、調味料（アミノ酸等）、（一部に大豆を含む））、具（わかめ、ふ、調味顆粒（鰹節粉、デキストリン、煮干粉、食塩）、乾燥ねぎ／調味料（アミノ酸等）、酸化防止剤（ビタミンE）、クエン酸、（一部に小麦を含む））
Seasoning miso: Rice miso (domestic production), kelp extract, dried bonito powder, salt / alcohol, seasonings (amino acids, etc.), (some contains soybeans)),
Ingredients: Wakame, Fu, Seasoning Granules (Katsuobushi Powder, Dextrin, Boiled Dried Powder, Salt), Dried Onions / Seasonings (Amino Acids, etc.), Antioxidants (Vitamin E), Citric Acid, (Some Contains Wheat)
So okay, it's just labeled 'fu', which is the raw ingredient in itself.

You said it right a bunch of times but insisted on repeating it over and over again as if you had mispronounced it. So confusing trying to understand what your thought process was there. Stickyfingaz...as in blown to the moon, blood shot eyes, and altered mind state?? Makes sense

Where exactly does one get the green onions or tofu from to add to the miso soup in the caves of Iwo Jima? I have not read anything about the Japanese soldiers sprucing up their meals during the defense of the island, it seems to me that they had bigger things to worry about than miso soup and it would be sad if the modern Japanese army has become so soft that they worry about how their food tastes. Real soldiers eat nails and wipe with 80 grit sandpaper.
There's six and a half minutes I'll never get back. Be so much more interesting if you were actually able to explain better what some of the things were.
