Winter Time Lapse Port Elgin, Ont, Ca taken with Raspberry Pi Computer and pi-timolo

- This is my 2016-2117 winter time lapse video. View from an upper window pointing at the street in front of our house in Port Elgin Ontario Canada. It was taken with a Raspberry Pi computer and picamera camera module using a program that I wrote in python called pi-timolo (Pi, Timelapse, Motion detect, Low light) This program is available on GitHub at

There were approx 180,000 images taken for the video but due to editing, some content was left on the cutting room floor so to speak.
Most local people I talked to said the past winter was pretty mild except for a few storms and some cold weather. We found the weather in Texas real nice so this video is the closest we came to experiencing winter in Port Elgin, Saugeen Shores.

This is a short version that takes extends into spring. The ending sequence where the tree's turn green was done by only using the images in the mid day period so the trees can be seen going from bare to full green.

Living in a tropical climate, the idea of 3 or 4 months of unremitting snow is unendurable - but the owners of this house think so as well, because they just clear out for the entire winter for someplace else.

It's a beautiful little town, grown a lot though. Because it's right next to the lake there's always a good amount of snow
Quite familiar with the town, at least before it seems to have exploded. My family has been camping in the municipal park since 1941. I've been up a few times in the winter but not more than a handful. Living on lake ontario though we're in a bubble in the golden horseshoe, off lake erie hits close to Niagara region and off lake huron usually hits london to brantford or across Toronto.
My body is sensitive to heat; I think you're right.

The summer there must last for 7 days if you get that much snow
What we don't see is the tons of lake-effect snow this area gets during the colder days.
It is necessary to be very strong to push the snow out each time ! Also, sometimes the night seems clear, it is some thunderstorms in your winters ? Interesting video !

The footage went straight from the 23rd to the 27th. Santa is obviously IT-savvy (he should be - he has enough supplies of the stuff) and hacked in to delete the footage that would have confirmed his existence.

Good lord, you got snow for 3 days but mostly seperate days, we havent even gotten any accumulative snow this year, but the other side of my state has gotten nearly a foot. Its not a big state either
The barely melts from mid December to early march
Last year in 2017 we did not get that much snow but in 2016 we got so much I stayed home a lot because school was cancelled

That is a crane boom working on house construction. There are lots of houses and subdivisions being built in our area.

exactly my thoughts too, there were no fireworks and so on, all were just at home like every evening..
How cold did it get?
Don't know how cold it gets. We go south for the winder so the Raspberry Pi Camera runs unattended all winter. It is connected to a UPS in case of power failures. In fact it has run many years unattended. Last check there were several million images on external USB hard drive organized by year and dated sub directories with ten thousand images in each. This is a setting in the PiTimolo python program I wrote. It is on GitHub github.com/pageauc/pi-timolo

I turned the music off while watching the video. It adds nothing and it outright annoying.

Raspberry Pi Camera and the pi-timolo app github.com/pageauc/pi-timolo I wrote runs automated all the time.. Have a 1 TB USB drive attached to the RPI and it is hardly full after 3 or 4 years running continuously.
I think they go to Texas for the winter.
