I'm so lucky in Australia. We have peacock jumping spiders which are my favourite not just because they're so colourful and entertaining but also because new species are being discovered.
Ink So you see extremely colorful peacock jumping spiders on a regular basis where you live? We primarily have 'bold jumping spiders' here. They are all black. But they typically do a pretty good job of staying out of sight most of the time. I can work outside, surrounded by flowers and shrubs and houses, and a small patch of trees, and not see one except maybe 1 out of 3 days.
This video is awesome. Jumping spiders are far and away my favorite subjects for macro photography. I tried this technique today, and within an hour or so I caught and photographed as many as I had already photographed prior to to watching this video. Seriously, I can't say thank you enough.
I wish I had a guy like this as an uncle , very educated and gentlemen likewise. I love jumpers and he would really fun to hang with ...would love to see your collection. Thanks for the video
Well, some people do have jumpers as pets, but mostly of the genus Phidippus. This man here, is one of the greatest (if not the most) researchers of the family in the world.
been collecting spiders for 35 years as an ameture scientist and now sharing my pride and joy with my nephew. I studied geology at SOU. Great video btw and love the tips. Someday I will post my methods for capturing black widows.
Excellent video. Clear and concise explanation from an expert who knows how to teach, and video taken by a professional or very good amateur. I would only add two things- a warning about ticks and Lyme disease (among other diseases) which is part of the reason you wear long pants and tuck your cuffs into your boots, and maybe an explanation of the data you're writing. The location, lat/lon and date are self explanatory. The numbering system seems to be the 2 digit year followed by the incremented location number. At the bottom it seems to be the researchers' initials- maybe research assistants there helping you? The 650 m el. stumped me for a minute until I realized it was meters of elevation. Looks like you were walking down the hill in Malaysia. (put the coordinates into google maps and take a look at where he was, people- pretty cool). Then there's a percentage in parentheses. Is that the relative humidity? You have it on the typed slip but not on your notes. Thanks for the vid.
Thanks for posting this! Some people complain that there are too many jumping spiders where they live; I'm cursed with an under-abundance of jumping spiders. Maybe after watching this I'll find more of those adorable creatures. :)
This video were the principal focus for the methods of my cientific initiation in a survey of jumping spiders here in Brazil. It'll be organized as Maddison 2015 proposes too. I just have to thank you, professor Wayne Maddison.
I absolutely love this yesterday I was moving a jumping spider and it jumped to my hand and that’s when I knew that my own first pet would be a jumping spider
An exceptionally helpful video. I'm about to start collecting again (in the UK) after a long lay-off - so thanks for reminding me of the basics - much appreciated.
Great tips, Wayne, and perfect timing for our AZ collecting excursion, which starts today. Motivated Daniel Zurek and I to go grab carpentry belts yesterday with nice leather pockets like yours.
Me collecting: OH MY GOSH THERE'S A JUMPING SPIDER Jumping spider: You'll never catch me alive, bub!! I just started studying Salticidae here in Brazil, before that I was studying spiders in general, my colleagues at the lab tend to collect directly into alcohol. I was heartbroken the first time I went collecting with them, so I started to look for alternatives for this and this video helped me realize that one of my initial ideas is very much effective. I just need different vials!
@@aubrey756 not yet, but I'm working on the samples we had on the lab already, so fortunately I don't need to euthanize any more of them. After my undergraduate thesis is complete, I'll start looking into their behavior bit by bit and then I won't be having to euthanize anymore. And I don't know if there's ever going to be any alternatives for this when the research is taxonomic (because of the need to remove genitalia and or collect samples for genetics)...
I am just getting into some self study and have had a very hard time being able to kill them. I wish I had some samples to look at. Thank you for responding!
Hi Wayne, we Love your video. I have a goal of identifying and recording an undiscovered insect or spider. How much time should I spend, in 1 acre of land, before moving to the next acre? Also, how much distance should my next acre be, from the last?
*his neighbors* “WTH, IS HE BEATING BUSHES WITH STICKS?” *him* “oh nah, I’m just looking for jumping spiders to add to my collection!” *neighbors* “😳-“ THIS IS A JOKE
"Mom, *I'm not properly equipped* for jumping spider hunting. I'll need a full jumping spider gear and tools. Do you have a fanny pack too and your sun weather hat? I'm walking around nude looking for jumping spiders after watching this tutorial. Oh mom, do you still have that beating stick you used on me yesterday for getting an F on my fractions math test? I guess jumping spiders also have math issues."
I like jumping Spider their are cool looking to me it seems like when I go out side sometimes I run into them sometimes or there run into me in away sometime jumping Spider do I do not take them out of the woods I live them in woods.
Carl Mathiason I have caught jumping spiders at winter in really cold weather, they usually make nests under a dry dead trees bark be careful because you have to pull apart the nest and it easy to injure the spider in the nest if your not careful
I just caught one in my house with paper and a glass. He almost died like ten times. I also saw what I think is his mom outside. (She’s huge) I am saving him for when my parents get home and i can educate them on him.(he is a baby nc jumping spider I think)
Love this guy! I am arachnaphobic to the extreme, however jumping spiders for some reason don't bother me. I live in Canada and can't seem to find some of the bigger species of audax or regius, however I am finding a lot of Salticus scenicus. Unfortunately they are incredibly tiny. I have my stick, however I should try this shield thing.
What about collecting spiders at night? Furthermore, most spiders are night hunters. So, are the same methods acceptable at night, including flashlights?
So I have a couple of questions. Does the beating hurt the spiders? Because my son and I are trying to collect jumpers to keep as pets. It hurts my heart that you kill the jumpers. I can’t bare to think how many you’ve killed in the last 43 years. But besides that, does your betting method hurt them? Also, do your vials kill then? There are no air holes. Thanks.
Half the time, you don't HAVE to find them... They find YOU! How many times I've been sitting outside and have a curious little bugger crawl onto my arm, hand, or leg?
Me watching this: oh these are great ideas for finding my next seasonal pet spider! The guy: most people just catch them directly into alcohol Me: D: oh
Yes, they do! There are many species of jumping spiders in England. Salticus Scenicus (zebra spider) should be the most common one there. Some are quick, and some are shy, but many of them would stop to look at you. ^^
Alex Kadon Yes! You can find jumping spiders in all countries, except Iceland and the poles. Most of the species live, however, in tropical countries. In the Philippines you can even find the most intelligent spider of all, the Portia jumping spider. They learn from experience and can make elaborate plans... Oh, and look up the peacock spiders. These australian spiders are cute bundles of joy. ^^
Caught one, Scottish black. January 3rd. Is this unseasonable as i'm positive Saticidae are more spring or summer. It's in a small Ferrero Rocher clear tub checking their frustrations out. POINT : CAN i keep it in a usual plastic tank with pantyhose for mesh and the TINIEST black insects my knowledgeable dealer sells for live food, or maybe i have answered my own question. Thanks.
This is the Bob Ross of spider collecting
He's literally the Bob Ross of spider collecting and I love it.
MaxiTeyla so true!!
😂 i can't. This is correct
More like Ned Flanders...
Thank God! Two pieces of good news in one day! Not only is it Brexit 🇬🇧, but I’ve just discovered a biologist even more eccentric than me! Bless him!
This guy is hardcore. He don't mess about.
This is the nerdiest thing I've ever seen! The outfit, the pouch, the tools, the vegetation striking techniques! Perfection.
I haven't graduated to a whistle or gps, but, but the rest is worth it for me.

I agree. And the variety is astounding, noticing bits of personality among so many species, sometimes big bits. It never gets old.
I initially thought he was going to blow his whistle and then chase the spider with the whacking stick....
An exceptionally helpful video. I'm about to start collecting again (in the UK) after a long lay-off - so thanks for reminding me of the basics - much appreciated.
Are there many interesting jumpers in England or is the zebra jumper the 'best' one?
i'd say that the zebra jumper is the most interresting one
