While this piece of software doesn’t work for Donkey Kong Country Returns, it is entirely possible to patch your ROM with a Gecko code to remap shake to a shoulder button on a Wii Classic Controller! It’s the way I played the game and it was fantastic. It’s no GameCube controller, but the Classic Controller Pro is still a very good controller in my opinion so I didn’t mind the difference.

You can emulate the sideways wii remote controls with a Wii U gamepad by setting the option to when you're injecting a Wii game into a virtual console app using a computer program to install on a homebrewed Wii U
This is exactly why we need romhacks for Wii games to support traditional controllers, starting with the ones that would benefit the most with them, like Donkey Kong Country Returns!
Don't know if that's a hot take or not, but motion based aiming is amazing, gyro is great, but i wish newer consoles also had sensor bars, i didn't play a lot of games on wii, but the precision in Mario Galaxy 2's aiming with Yoshi is incredible and it's a pity that this game might be stuck on the wii cause the alternatives don't even come close to replicating it.

What I'm really hopeful to see is really good VR Wii emulation in the future. Not to long ago a PSP emulator fork released that allowed you to play PSP games like a native VR title, it's incredibly cool and a very amazing way to experience certain psp titles. While VR PSP is really cool, the Wii would be a bigger step up since Wii games would translate perfectly into VR. Motion Controls can be emulated and translated so well into REAL Motion Controls, now you can personally box Matt in the face in Wii Sports! VR Wii Emulator development has been very rocky, and surprisingly it hasn't been necessary because it was challenging to develop. The original developer from back in the 2010s was developing in a way that others in the emulation community was against, so they eventually ceased development. Fast forward many depressing years with lack of progress and after finishing the PSP VR Emulator I previously discussed the developer decided to take a shot at Wii VR emulation. Things were going mostly smoothly, however unfortunately now that Nintendo went after Yizu (switch) and Cirta (3DS) emulation developers they got paranoid and wanted to stay on the down low for the time being, which for them meant ceasing development for the time being. Another developer that was assisting with development has decided to carry on the development, however are developing it behind the scenes for the time being without updates to the public, so we don't know how well development is progressing. Originally it was being developed for Oculus Quest, however the new developer that has taken over has decided to switch to developing for PC for the time being since that is were their knowledge is. After completion of the PC version, the PSP VR emulator says he'll be happy to return from his break to add Oculus Quest Support. I'm hopeful things are progressing smoothly, it's unfortunate that we aren't getting updates but I understand wanting to stay on the down low now and avoid Nintendo's eyes.
Thanks for this. Interestingly enough, I just watched your video about how to improve the Wii's visuals by tweaking the deflicker settings in USB Loader GX and it works like a dream, even on a CRT. This just made my mission to make the Wii a much more enjoyable system that much more doable. Shoehorning in motion controls was never something that felt great on a lot of games. Donkey Kong Country Returns is one of the most annoying instances of this in my opinion when you have to waggle to roll because it just isn't intuitive enough on such a difficult game.
Jon, your videos about weird, obscure and cool details about the Wii and Nintendo in general are a bless after a hard day of work. Keep it up, and thank you and GVB for every video.
Weird to hear Jon call them the IR sender and receiver at the end of the video, given the sensor bar just draws power to run some IR lights (this is why battery powered sensor bars don't even connect to the console as well as why the infamous candle set up works)
Metroid: Other M is such a seriously underrated game. That story was emotionally intense like few other games ever made. Pointer aiming on the Wii version of LoZTP was also super nice even if the waggle to swing controls felt awkward.
For donkey Kong country returns there was a cheat code to make the game playable with a regular controller as it assign the motion controls to regular buttons
One of the best wiimote/nunchuck experiences was PES. Being able to drag players into space and then have a pinpoint 50yrd pass get you in behind the defence was truly amazing. None of the frustrating passing that most football games suffer from. I honestly don't think anyone talks about it enough.
In the ending section you mentioned that the Wiimote sends IR to the sensor bar, but from my understanding it is reversed, with the bar emitting IR which the Wiimote picks up from its sensor.
Yeah, there's a low resolution IR camera in the controller and the "sensor" bar is two groups of several IR LEDs spaced out (I want to say two groups of five with each group being spaced slightly unevenly 1/3/1 if I recall from looking at mine with a phone camera a few years back?). It's why you can use third party ones like the Dolphinbar on the Wii still or even other sources of IR light like a couple of candles spaced out in a pinch
Muramasa and The Last Story already not requiring motion controls to begin with: "are we a joke to you?" jokes aside, the Wii homebrew community is insane and I love it
Hah! I went into the same rabbit hole as you Jon. I really wanted to play DKC Returns but map a button for the wagglings. I finally found a way. But you need a Wii U. I uploaded a video yesterday showing how it’s being done. And it plays great!! Gone are the waffling!
You’ve been able to map motion controls including tilt to the classic controller for years using cheat files and USB Loader GX. I played Donkey Kong Country the week it came out on a classic controller.
is wild how much more playable both Other M, and Sonic & the Black Knight become when you can play them with actual controls not being able to play Rythm Heaven with the DK Bongos is a crime tho
If only their was a console that Nintendo could put Donkey Kong Country Returns on with not only button inputs and 60fps but also 1080p resolution. Though I guess there's no incentive, its not like they're making a theme park attraction based on the game of something.
You have how the IR works backwards. The black thing on the end of the wiimote is an IR camera, the sensor bar is a misnomer as it's just 2 IR LEDs that are visible to the camera in the wiimote. You can even replace it with 2 candles.
There is only one Wii game for which I wish there was a way to at least allow you to toggle off tilt motion controls. That’s Alien Syndrome. A pretty decent game which I almost loved but it was ruined by forcing an “all times” motion control that would spin the camera. It meant that it was often very hard to just sit and play it without accidentally spinning the camera while using the controls, normally. They should have put a toggle button, but they decided not to. This feature would almost be heavenly for that game, but alas there are certain times you want to spin the camera, so this does still pose a problem. Though, the auto camera, in it, isn’t that bad either.

If you have USB Loader GX, Nintendont, the d2x cIOS installer, and Priiloader installed on your SD card for your Homebrewed Wii, you don’t need a Wii Remote to turn on your Wii and play GameCube games on USB Loader GX.
Something I find really funny is the multiplayer party games in Sonic and the Secret Rings, despite the games clearly being designed for Wii remote, they actually support GameCube controller (and maybe classic controller, I’ve never had one to test). It is not advertised anywhere at all, not even on the box. Found out by accident as a kid, haha. Really interesting that they bothered to do that when the main game only supports Wii remote.
The Wii is literally unplayable for me and others like me since I have severe arthritis pretty much everywhere in my body and need at least 5-6 joints replaced. I've known about this for a while, and it's a godsend. ...emulation still is by far the best thing to use in this case, though...
5:19 y'know this is the first time I've realized there's a decent to SMG2 not being part of Super Mario 3D All Stars! I hope the devs of these tools see the video and maybe address the nunchuck input issues! (maybe add tilt input as well, but I wont be greedy)
I find the form factor of the Wii Remote extremely uncomfortable, so being able to use a regular controller in its place is a huge deal for me. I really hope GC2Wiimote is updated more and possibly implemented into other loaders, because there are so many games I’m sure I would get way more enjoyment out of using the hack.
also, Gyro aiming is nowhere near as good as IR sensor aiming, and my hope is that the Switch 2 has the IR sensor bar integraed, just make it part of the dock not to meintion IR pointing doesn't require you to waggle the whole screen, what was Nintendo thinking?!
I remember seeing someone decouple the Missiles in OtherM from Aiming altogether so its possible to get an even smoother experience with that one. Played with a similar layout to what you did here on Dolphin and besides the story and level design that game holds up surprisingly well even after so long.
Such a shame DKC returns wasnt cooperating, its the first thing i thought of, im curious though, could this program work with the controllers from the nes/snes mini consoles? They use the nunchuck connector and they work for emulators on wii and the sideways wii mote is basically a nes controller, man imagine play DKC returns with a snes controller, perfection
Oh when it comes to nunchuck shakes, they're actually two different inputs - shake is one and directional acceleration is another. Also an unpopular opinion probably but Wii and DS games adapted to more traditional controls with a bit of gyro or motion movements would make for some of the best games in history. Metroid Other M would easily be an 8/10
I played Other M on Dolphin with a DS4, and there's just no button combo that replaces the point-and-shoot missile action well enough to keep up 100% with later bosses. It gets rough.
i love the wii remote so much i would actually use it to control my computer as a mouse as if it was a tv remote, if i had a living room btw i suggest touchmote as a program to do that to all ppl who'd like to do this too, it works perfectly fine but you have to shut it down if you want to play games with the remote, youll need a bluetooth adapter and the program will connect ur remote more easily than doing it on your own and turning the program off wont disconnect ur remote so its a good way to play more quickly games on wii u emulator, dolphin actually connects ur remote pretty quickly so you wont need touchmote if you want to play dolphin emu
Off topic but one project that would be really cool would be If someone took a Wii and put It Inside a GameCube shell It looks like a gamecube, It plays gamecube games, It used a gamecube controller but It also has wifi and plays wii games
If GCtoWiimote could be implemented to USB Loader GX with tilt controls, then playing Sonic and The Secret Rings with the GameCube controller with all of the disabled blurry filters and with mClassic upscaling would be the perfect fix for that game, even tho the controls are pretty good on a Wiimote IMO
Gonna try to use this for my Wii, I’ve been meaning to finish a replaythrough of Epic Mickey before Rebrushed is released but my Wiimotes are all broken with the nunchuck slot disconnecting constantly so it would be nice to play without motion.
Donkey Kong country returns on wii you can replace shaking the wii remote with the B button using the ocarina cheat system, i use usbloader gx which has ocarina cheat system support, you can either load the original disc and download the cheat codes, or load from a wbfs usb or sd card
How about playing Classic Controller games with a GameCube pad via RVLoader? Examples include: • Blast Works: Build, Trade, Destroy • GTI Club Supermini Fiesta • The Last Story • Xenoblade Chronicles • No More Heroes 2: Desparate Struggle • A Boy And His Blob • Kamen Rider Dragon Knight • Toshinden • Baroque • Tetris Party Deluxe • TrackMania • Samurai Shodown Anthology
I think if anything this video proves that most Wii games are still best played on Wii with a Wii Remote. But of course academically this is very interesting 🙂
Unfortunate that Secrey Rings cannot be played this way. I love the game, and I think it utilised the Wiimote to its maximum, but an option for a GameCuhe controller would be great.
3:50 Because Sakamoto Yoshio was envious of how greatly the Prime games were received across the globe, and given it was Retro Studios who convinced Nintendo to pack the Nunchuck with every console, he threw a tamper tantrum and decided to force Team Ninja to use only the Wii Remote, saying that the limitation would breed creativity. Seriously, Sakamoto is seen as the father figure of the Metroid franchise, but when the franchise leaves his care and sees success away from him on the other side of the globe, he sees it as an attack on his ego, so when the series goes back to his hands he decides to limit what it can do by crippling the way players can control Samus and nearly erasing all the exploration factor. You will not go where Sakamoto does not want you to go, you will not play in any way Sakamoto did not intend you to! Adam is seen as Samus's father figure in Other M, but she left his command and found success working as an independent bounty hunter far away from him. The moment she goes back to his command, Adam decides to limit what she can do by essentially crippling her abilities and nearly erasing all her ability to explore. You do not move unless I say so, you do not fire until I say so! It is no coincidence Other M does not feature any mentions of the Chozo, Samus' ACTUAL adoptive parents, and it is no coincidence Sakamoto tried to erase the Prime games from the continuity either!
There is one game on the Wii the I would like to get back some of traditional controls, by still using Wii Mote and Nunchuk. Spider-Man 3. The game uses shaking Wii mote around for light attacks, while 1 and 2 buttons are do nothing in that game. So I would like to make a shortcut for shaking Wii Mote to the 1 button on the same controller. Is that possible?

Something I find really funny is the multiplayer party games in Sonic and the Secret Rings, despite the games clearly being designed for Wii remote, they actually support GameCube controller (and maybe classic controller, I’ve never had one to test). It is not advertised anywhere at all, not even on the box. Found out by accident as a kid, haha. Really interesting that they bothered to do that when the main game only supports Wii remote.
Even though I don’t mind motion controls, it’s surprising to see people find a hack to play games without motion controls.
The Wii is literally unplayable for me and others like me since I have severe arthritis pretty much everywhere in my body and need at least 5-6 joints replaced. I've known about this for a while, and it's a godsend.
...emulation still is by far the best thing to use in this case, though...
your intro always reminds me of the Pokemon Channel game on gamecube
Is there anything Jon can’t conceive of? No there isn’t
in time we will have no more stupid wii mote as a requirement
TMW you find out that Super Paper Mario was meant to be a GameCube game instead of the Wii
Would be great to see this adapted to put bongo controls back into DK Barrel Blast.
I really hope GC2Wiimote is updated more and possibly implemented into other loaders, because there are so many games I’m sure I would get way more enjoyment out of using the hack.
also, Gyro aiming is nowhere near as good as IR sensor aiming, and my hope is that the Switch 2 has the IR sensor bar integraed, just make it part of the dock
not to meintion IR pointing doesn't require you to waggle the whole screen, what was Nintendo thinking?!
I have that Zelda Wiimote as well. My favorite one, for sure.
For Donkey Kong Country you have to set PADReadMode to bypass in the games settings
Ive played it already a bit and it feels responsive
Donkey Kong country returns has a direct patch for the game that removes the motion controls.
Oh when it comes to nunchuck shakes, they're actually two different inputs - shake is one and directional acceleration is another.
Also an unpopular opinion probably but Wii and DS games adapted to more traditional controls with a bit of gyro or motion movements would make for some of the best games in history.
Metroid Other M would easily be an 8/10
Personally, I feel Other M's gameplay has more issues than the forced Wii controls. But that simple change is still an improvement regardless.
If you want to play dkc returns, there is a cheatcode that allows you to remap the buttons on a classic controller
I played Other M on Dolphin with a DS4, and there's just no button combo that replaces the point-and-shoot missile action well enough to keep up 100% with later bosses. It gets rough.
Wonder if gc controllers on gc-controller compatible wii games will ever be doable on wii u with the gc controller adapter
i love the wii remote so much i would actually use it to control my computer as a mouse as if it was a tv remote, if i had a living room
btw i suggest touchmote as a program to do that to all ppl who'd like to do this too, it works perfectly fine but you have to shut it down if you want to play games with the remote, youll need a bluetooth adapter and the program will connect ur remote more easily than doing it on your own and turning the program off wont disconnect ur remote so its a good way to play more quickly games on wii u emulator, dolphin actually connects ur remote pretty quickly so you wont need touchmote if you want to play dolphin emu
For Metroid why not put the aiming button waggle on the Z button or a trigger so you aren't taking your hands off the joystick when going into aiming
You can use Gecko codes to allow Classic Controllers for New Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong Country Returns, and I believe Metal Slug Anthology.
Dolphin users:
Look what they need to mimic a fraction of our power!
Using a wii or wii u is the best way to play the games!! (I am keeping my tears in)
Does anyone have an Xbox controller config for Madworld on Dolphin?
Off topic
but one project that would be really cool
would be If someone took a Wii and put It Inside a GameCube shell
It looks like a gamecube, It plays gamecube games, It used a gamecube controller
but It also has wifi and plays wii games
Google Gamecube nano
If switch pro controller could be adapted with Gyro, could be a perfect package to allow pointer/tilt controls in games with the gyro.
damnnnnnnn now I really want a true Sonic and the Black Knight remaster
Alright, tempted to learn decompilation so I can remap Secret Rings on a controller
I wonder if we get to use an adapter to add keyboard/mouse support to this feature. Cursors work much better with a mouse.
Examples include:
• Blast Works: Build, Trade, Destroy
• GTI Club Supermini Fiesta
• The Last Story
• Xenoblade Chronicles
• No More Heroes 2: Desparate Struggle
• A Boy And His Blob
• Kamen Rider Dragon Knight
• Toshinden
• Baroque
• Tetris Party Deluxe
• TrackMania
• Samurai Shodown Anthology
I think if anything this video proves that most Wii games are still best played on Wii with a Wii Remote. But of course academically this is very interesting 🙂
The DK Bongos tragedy is so painful
Unfortunate that Secrey Rings cannot be played this way. I love the game, and I think it utilised the Wiimote to its maximum, but an option for a GameCuhe controller would be great.
Take a sip every time he says super mary-oh. Have a good time
if you remove the motion from a wii it's an i.
This is great that you can do this on an actual Wii. But I know that you can do this on the Dolphin emulator and it will work with nunchuck shaking
I'd liked to see the Mario Party 8 and 9 minigames ported to GC controllers
@GVG Did you put out a video on the Dualshock working with the Wii? I couldn't find one, I'd love to see how you got that working
This is ideal for Web of Shadows on Wii U someday
There is one game on the Wii the I would like to get back some of traditional controls, by still using Wii Mote and Nunchuk. Spider-Man 3. The game uses shaking Wii mote around for light attacks, while 1 and 2 buttons are do nothing in that game. So I would like to make a shortcut for shaking Wii Mote to the 1 button on the same controller. Is that possible?
I need this so much! Love the Wii but my physical disability means I can't do the motion stuff
For sonic and the black knight do you hit a wall at the cave mission where you havd to light crystals
Topic suggestion: Browsers on old consoles. Or, GBC as a universal infrared remote.
I've been looking for this. I've seen it used on portables in the past but I didn't know what it was.
This was super interesting, but yeah I agree with hot take time, ultimately. The Wi is a wonderful system!
imagine super paper mario on 3ds in full 3d
im still mad we didnt get that
Can you do this video again with the dual shock 4 controller? Is DS4 good for MOM?
I hope some Kinect games get the same treatment, for example Sonic Free Riders without Kinect
I wish Switch had native GC & Wii controller support
I wish the Switch were just a portable Wii U.
I does have GameCube controller support with the official adapter made for smash that works with other games too!
@@gluttonousmaximus9048Wii U would’ve been actually decent if it had good games outside of generic bubbly Nintendo titles
@@archonthaaproducerGeneric? Half of Switch’s library of IPs are Wii U ports. The games were great, the console sucked
@@sasook Hell nah you tweaking. The wii U had Nintendo's most generic lineup. The only good notable Wii U games is Tropical Freeze, Xenoblade X, and Wooly World. The rest were generic Mario titles. Please tell me what unique games were had outside of that? the 3D mario was bad, the 2D mario was bad, the sports games sucked, the third party support sucked, etc.
I'm tired of the Nintendo fanboy cope bruh. Everyone knew what the Wii U was it was the software lineup that doomed the system. It had nothing notable outside what I mentioned and Smash+MK8
