I have the Rane 72 MK2 and I have recently done a sound test comparing with the S11 a few days back. Rane still a winner. however the S11 its a beautiful solid mixer that I will definitely buy anytime! great video.
I had conflicting feelings because of the Rane 72 @ launch of the S11, but now I feel like it’s a super solid mixer. Whenever I save enough money I think I’ll go with the S11 over the 72.
I did what I said CT. I have the S11 Special Edition and I SOLD my Rane 70. Done and Done! Still learning the features on the S11 but I love it so far and especially the Orange 🍊 control vinyl.
Mr Terry. Out of all the mixers you have reviewed. Which one of these would you recommend to someone who's budget doesn't matter but has been working with the pioneer S9. Would it be Pioneer S11, Rane 72, the Rane 70 or the ATRAK signature Rane 70 mixer. Thank you for your professional opinion and all that you do for the DJ Culture. Much respect.
CT awesome review! Thanks 🙏. Now waiting for comparison with the 72mk2 that would B Great. Loves your ideas & thanks for the hard work! I can say if a to activate a feature is taking more than 2 buttons pushing than finally it all ends up not using that feature. In this days people want & need “Right here and Right now”! Hope you got what I meant.
Terry I found a new trick as far as the silent cue goes. The S11 has an effect called Kill which is essentially a silent cue that you can trigger with your effects pads.
Good video . Okay I have been DJING Since 1983 . Last mixer I bought was I believe called the VESTAX PMC PRO -07 . It has a incredible smooth crossfader . Still DJING and using mostly records. I have never used SERATO on any gig ever. Getting lotsof calls for gigs . Want to go SERATO and wax and I need a new mixer . Would you recommend the DJM S11 for someone who is just learning. SERATO ? I am leaning towards buying this mixer but not sure? Again thanks for the video.
Serato isn’t hard to learn . I just got my mixer last week and it’s definitely worth it. Plus USIng the s-11 you can just learn the mixer and Menus and you won’t even have to look or touch your computer that’s the whole point of the screens features
Was it hot in the room when you made this video? Enjoyed the review. One question - how can I make my voice sound better and more resonant? Sometimes I do videos and my voice sounds high and pitchy and I have a tendency to be too wordy. Any advice for that? Much appreciated.
Old battle dj here. Stopped in early 2000 on an SH1200. :-D Considering getting back after seeing this mixer and the RP 8000 mk2. Two questions: can you move single or multiple stems to track 3 and 4? And two can you record a scratch on the fly into the sampler, have it loop it and still have four free decks? Love your videos! Thanks in advance!
Great review! And thanks for spending some time on the sound quality. Often overlooked in other people’s reviews. I will upgrade from my S9 ( when I get some money!)
its a gorgeous mixer and some of the features like the exclusive features for Serato with this mixer could be very useful but is it right for me?I would love to try the three or four main mixers on my list and see which one i would go for.All have their pros and cons but all would be a great choice. The Reloop Elite might be at the bottom end of my choices but i cant argue with the price. With the mk2 Rane twelves pumping out time code with RCAs the field is wide open. Its a great time to be a dj...at least tech wise.Hurry up with that Vaccine doc.
I've been eyeing this mixer in particular. Been on the S9, and I wasn't too impressed with the Rane 72 Mk 1, so would love to know your thoughts on that. Did you like the echo on the Pioneer S9/11 vs the Rane 70? Because I've been trying to get the echo on the 72 to sound like it on the S9 and have not got it to sound right. Like the tail is off, or the highs are to prevalent.
You can’t. The echo is definitely different on each mixer. I think the echo, especially the ducking echo is better on the pioneers but to each their own. I can’t reproduce the same ducking echo on the 72
@@ClevelandTerry thank you! I thought I was going crazy. Was talking to DJ Soo on the subreddits cos he just got the S11 for review as well and he liked the effects on the S11. But he said to update the mixer to the latest firmware, which I did but still could never get it to sound right. On the S9, it was intuitive. And even on the DJM 900, like once I saw Mojaxx do a tutorial on it, I was set. Would love to see if you could even get the echo to be as close to the S9/11 on your Rane 72 review.
@@ClevelandTerry One of the biggest bummers on the 70 is the lack of customizing the FX. I would love to have the ability to choose hold echo along with normal echo, without having to go to the settings and switch. And because they share the same parameter setting between them, it’s unusable in a live setting. It would be cool to do some some looping stuff on the hold echo and have echo transitions in the same live set... :(
I was looking thru some videos for the s11 and this popped up. And bought the s11 about a month ago... subbed right after... man you got some great content, im glad this video popped out.
I have both... I love the rane quality and feel. The build is soooo solid.... but those dang effects are a pain to navigate. Also, the s11 effects sound better. Faders are better on the 72mk2, but the screen's refresh rate makes it hard to look at the wavelengths. The rane had the most awesome paddles, but the 4 decks on the s11 and the workflow makes it the winner for me at the moment.
Going to starting up a mobile dj biz after the pandemic and currently trying to decide which mixer to get. Leaning towards this, but I'm a Rane guy at heart.
Quality vid as usual Terry. I happened to check on the VDJ wiki, and there's no official support for VDJ right now. I'm very curious where those exclusive features work in VDJ when support is added. Because I know that you can do split queue using VDJ on mixers that don't have split cue. Time will tell.
How's the shiny top holding after one month of use (or even on your S9 after all these years)? Where i live the SE doesn't come with the special edition Orange vinyl so i'm not fully convinced if it's worth the extra just for an all metal faceplate...
@@ClevelandTerry i love your reviews .I have a question and I hpe you respond cus no -one is .you have 3/4 control on the mixer touch screen side .But do you have control over the controller / turntable side ? example lc 6000?

Hi Terry! I can’t get my new S11 to show waveforms or cue points at all on the mixer when using only a usb stick with cdj 2000 Nexus players. Is there a setting I have to select or does it only work with newer cdj’s like the 3000’s? Or do I have to prepare music in Rekordbox software or something for waveforms and cue points to show on the mixer? Any help is much appreciated.
Would there be any Pros or Cons of connecting a Denon DJ Prime Media Player to the s11 mixer vs a Pioneer Cdj Player. Would all the bells and whistles within this particular mixer and functionality work to full potential with a Denon Player since it works off different software ?
thanks for the review. For me if I have a mic jack input on top, I end up bashing/breaking the lead when doing fast juggles, so prefer it on the underside
Fred Balentine 0 seconds ago the only thing keeping me from using my s11 over my rane 72 is .. when im mixing i usualy after a verse pop out to a saved 8 or 4 beat intro loop to start my transition , with the rane you can at the tap of one button ( and being on beat) jump to your saved loop . with the s11 you cant do that not with one press i should say , when you switch to the saved loop pad mode and press the pad with the saved loop nothing happens it just cue's up your loop but in order to play it you now have to have pre placed a cue point at the beginning of your loop ,switch to hot cue mode and now hit that cue point while remembering to have selected the saved loop first now when you hit the cue your loop will play . I’m late to the party I got a 72 coming but was conflicted btwn s11 s9 70 72. But CT said your gonna get a great mixer no matter what is chosen. I chose 72 for overal default sound. And Rane=Serato so they will support their products (side note was using SL2 forever but bought M1 Mac)💆🏿♂️ woosaiii!
I am a user (Big) of the silent cue, so I need that available fast. Great review. How many days did it take you to get used to that mixer? i am sure those things are coming to the 72 or 70 in a couple of months
What mixer are you on? It's available natively on the 72 with the latest firmware. You just have to press the parameter buttons. And there was a XML file for the DJM S9 I found on TH-cam.
Looks awesome BUT I’ve got a 909 and it does what I need it to do. Ducking echo is why I bought it,, plus all the other incredible effects it has. Plus,,, I don’t have the coin to buy another mixer! Lol
Something I'd like to see on pioneer gear, flashing hot-cues. When you are approaching a hot cue, or it's the next hot-cue, the next one flashes. Weird I know, but I think it's a simple visual to know where your hot cues are and which one is next.
I need to know how to activate slicer without Loop? I hold the shift button and slicer at the same time. I'm trying to play each bar without looping when in slicer mode. I notice the mixer says (Slicer Loop) how about slicer with No Loop that's what I'm trying to do.
I did upgrade my DJM-S9 to the new S11 and I have no regrets. I do agree that the silent cue should be on the primary screen and if not maybe it can be midi mapped to one of the buttons. I did experience latency when using the silent cue function with Phase but it went away once I connected Phase directly to the usb port on my laptop. Kudos to Pioneer on another great mixer. Now just waiting for the Phase/Serato update. Great job CT...
Yea the dual deck deck move is the main reason I bought this after buying the 72. Have used deck move 0 times! 😂 I’m cautious but I wanted the option. As you said too many steps to make it work never seen it used while in a club bc clubs I work have nexus equipment
The sound card is better. The layout of the pads are better in terms of it being labeled. The 70 only labeled the main function of the pads, not secondary. The touchscreen, screen to see the music wave forms, touch FX, more functionality with the FXs, virtual decks, smooth echo, and front panel layout (fader adjustment and channel knobs, mic controls). I feel like you can be more creative with the s11. I got the SE, and it looks a lot better than the 70. Those are my main reasons why I like the s11 more.
@@Rtist1929 im just wondering why folks are comparing the rane 70 to the s11 they are 2 different classes ... the s11 and the rane 72 are in the same class
Also just a side note, I really miss the Pitch Echo from the original 909. Would be RAD if they added it in a firmware update. Thanks again for the review! 🙌🏼
Hey terry I ve been a rane guy for a look time. Im looking to buy the new rane 72 mk2 . but now pioneer came out with the s11 . And Im totally confused. I dj for fun and I will be using my 1200mk5 's with this unit. which one would you recommend and why. I live in New York so I went to guitar center to inquire about the s11 and I got no help. salesman didn't even know about the new s11. Im also looking for a new company to buy from some one I can call for info before buying. I Cant get that kind of service in New York any more. At least I can't find it
@@ClevelandTerry Thank you for responding. Forgive my ignorance. Are you saying use XLR (from mixer) to 1/4 inch (in focusrite)? or XLR female (from mixer) to XLR male (focus rite)
Pretty sure if you hold down the smooth echo button you can access the settings and set how many bars you’d like to wait for the effect to kick in, so if you’re beat juggling you could set it to 4 or 8 bars and it wouldn’t interfere-not perfect but definitely a good work around
i have an s11 and am constantly getting clicks and pops with my new laptop (pc) despite tweaking every setting possible within serato and optimising my comp settings. seems just to be an issue with PC's though as i have tested with a friends mac (lower spec compared to my pc mind you) and didn't get the same issues
When I was going to buy the Rane 72 I saw the leak video of the s11 I thought to myself should I wait for Pioneer.I end up buying the Rane 72 because I knew Pioneer wasn't going to give me the features I need like turn the phono into a line or 2 microphone & switch the mic to a line input like the Rane 72 mk2 don't get me wrong I had the s9 before and I like It. I love the smooth echo & the dual pad mode on the S11 hot cue & sampler at the same time I wish my Rane 72 had those features
@@ClevelandTerry will be waiting for this comparison as well. Really hard to decide which fits for my style. Features vs build and sound quality. Thanks for the hard word - Stay safe and B well!!
Browse on the screen only works on crates for me. Would like if it could've browse the file system so I could browse an external drive with tracks which aren't in any crates.
I bought the 70 and the echo & reverb effects didn't do it for me, so I just got the S11 and, it's EXACTLY the sound that I needed to add that extra spice to my mixes whether live or recorded. It's weird cuz the 62 had the right kick but for some reason it's not there on the 70. The cross fader on the S11 is most definitely dope too, real buttery smooth lol. On my old 62, they had the option to add effects to the sampler, they took that off on the 70, I thought you could do it on the S11 but it just ended being smooth echo button. One thing I will say is, the built on the RANE are SOLID & feels sturdy with the metal body, this is where pioneer loses to me and not taking anything away from the s11 cuz the features are AMAZING but the built feels light and the whole paint thing is an L but again, DOPE mixer and I'll just have to add a skin to preserve the look I guess. At the end of the day, it'll be a preference thing with everybody. Dope review, very clear and to the point! Thanks!
I also have a 62 as well as an S9 and love being able to add effects(mainly echo) on the sampler. The smooth echo button does say sampler FX underneath so hoping there’s a way to apply them? If anyone has any insight on this please share, it’s been driving me crazy!
Revisiting this cause my Rane Seventy-Two randomly disconnects which is shameful for a unit in this class, can't have unpredictable dead air at paying client events! My original instinct wanted the S11 anyway plus I've never used Rekordbox. I'm sure this will be more reliable
@@ClevelandTerry Thanks for responding, I'm not trying to turn this into a free troubleshooting thread lol! Tried Mohave, Big Sur, different USB cables, reinstalled the firmware etc etc. Apparently it's an issue many are having and Rane seemingly has been silent on this, haven't heard about it happening on the Seventy.
hey Cleveland! I hope Pioneer will used the s11mixer design on the next professional DJ controller with the CDJ 3000 platter. that would be sicks brah!
@@ClevelandTerry ha my memory is screwing with me. I thought I spent £900 on it but just checked my receipts and it was £1294. It's actually more expensive now than it was in Jan 2016. Maybe it was a jan sale, or just a weak uk pound now. S9 was definitely a game changer for me tho.
Meh, The more functions the more complains. This dj stuff is becoming just like the gaming world: Nothing but complains. Thats why new djs cant mix for shit!
Why can’t we just be honest once in our miserable lifetime and admit that pioneer mixers sound is the worst by far... and that an analog mixer of 30 years ago would sound better. I had so much hope in this mixer, I purchased it the announcement day and was delivered next day, it’s now in its way back... S9 Phono pream = 1/10 sound quality S9 Digital sound = 5/10 S11 phono = 5/10 (Faked to be improved it is still terrible but not as the S9 where quality was non existent) S11 Digital = 6/10 You said one thing where I more or less agree... pioneer no longer colour the sound.. yes they’ve changed that (good god this was terrible) but they’ve improved (based on this mixer and the XDJ-XZ) but they still faaaaaaaarr behind the worst analog mixer. One last thing... your digital files will sound better on an ANALOG mixer than digital mixer... you don’t believe this... pick any analog mixer. I’m so fed up of pioneer. (Rane isn’t any better) My current setup is... 2 X SL1200GR + ALLEN & HEATH Hybrid mixer (Analog and Digital sound card on a separate circuit) PX5 + Pioneer XP2 for MIDI Pads control... so damn happy

I think that would have to be done on the software not hardware.
In your professional opinion...If you're a Rekordbox user. Is this mixer worth purchasing?
Save some money get the S9 I use the S9 with rekordbox there are way to many features they cut when not using serato with the S11.
@@patrykb9091 do you loose any Rekordbox features with the S9....like the Rekordbox Pad Effects?
Pad effects are still on the s9 and s11
I returned my Rane 70 to get the pioneer s11 SE. I haven’t looked back.
Why do you like the s11 better? I'm trying to decide between the 2 right now
The sound card is better.
I just bought the S11 SE as well. Its an awesome mixer 😊👍
@@Rtist1929 im just wondering why folks are comparing the rane 70 to the s11 they are 2 different classes ... the s11 and the rane 72 are in the same class
hi man, thanks for video . i think you should set up better light in your video clips.
??? What do you mean? I think my lighting is fine.
Great review again! Thanks Terry !
I have a Pioneer S11 how can I activate slicer mode without the looping something like a slicer roll
Yes! I’ve been anxiously waiting my S11 and your review! Thanks!
At least I can't find it
Rane 72 mk2 review coming this week.
@@ClevelandTerry Ok great but will you say what's better?
What cables do you use to plug in the s11 to a focusrite interface?
You’d have to go analog. Either xlr or 1/4 inch. Although you should be able to record directly out of usb on the s11
@@ClevelandTerry Thank you for responding. Forgive my ignorance. Are you saying use XLR (from mixer) to 1/4 inch (in focusrite)? or XLR female (from mixer) to XLR male (focus rite)
Thank you! I still use my DJM-400.
Nice review!
Still working with the S9, gotta get the dough to upgrade.
So this mixer can easily switch from vinyl to digital?
Pretty much all standalone mixers can.
Pretty sure if you hold down the smooth echo button you can access the settings and set how many bars you’d like to wait for the effect to kick in, so if you’re beat juggling you could set it to 4 or 8 bars and it wouldn’t interfere-not perfect but definitely a good work around
I just turn off the crossfader on smooth echo. Problem solved.
i have an s11 and am constantly getting clicks and pops with my new laptop (pc) despite tweaking every setting possible within serato and optimising my comp settings. seems just to be an issue with PC's though as i have tested with a friends mac (lower spec compared to my pc mind you) and didn't get the same issues
Here's to hoping that Rane would update the firmware to enable those capabilities.
Those features on the s9 will eventually come to the 72
Great review. Can someone please get this man a 72 for a head to head comparison. I have looked all over for one but can’t seem to find one.
I have a full Rane 72 set up here. Swapping out now.
Shift + Smooth Echo = Sampler FX
@@DJMarv69 Thanks!
@@DJMarv69 WOW THANK YOU!!!!
@@DJMarv69 One more thing...My smooth echo button is almost flush with the faceplate is that correct or did mine come defective?
Do this have internal storage for recordings.
No.
I think you change your mind about the mic stuff being on the bottom if your a talker DJ.... its simply right in front and easy to access
I do talk on the mic all the time. It’s still better on top IMO.
Revisiting this cause my Rane Seventy-Two randomly disconnects which is shameful for a unit in this class, can't have unpredictable dead air at paying client events! My original instinct wanted the S11 anyway plus I've never used Rekordbox. I'm sure this will be more reliable
Have you done all the necessary troubleshooting?
@@ClevelandTerry Thanks for responding, I'm not trying to turn this into a free troubleshooting thread lol! Tried Mohave, Big Sur, different USB cables, reinstalled the firmware etc etc. Apparently it's an issue many are having and Rane seemingly has been silent on this, haven't heard about it happening on the Seventy.
@@thehouserocker i took back the rane 70 due to glitches
My S9 is now a collector's item :D
My problem with the mixer is no split cue .that too bad
just curious what is in the s11 that the 72 wouldn't have virtual decks ?
It would need the channels internally. The S11 has multiple in and outs. I’m not sure the Rane does. I’m reviewing the 72 right now.
RIP DJ Spinbad one of the greatest.
🙏🏾
hey Cleveland! I hope Pioneer will used the s11mixer design on the next professional DJ controller with the CDJ 3000 platter. that would be sicks brah!
I still think the 70 win. Reminds me of the 72. A learning curve. And the 70 has the scratch bank. Plus $2000? $1500 is already to much. 😂
Bless Up
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👌🏾💪🏾👍🏾
WOW
I just got to this video
the stepdown for me is the plastic feel of the mixer and also the fact that the plastic can wear off
It feels like the S9
huge step down
Wat up CT
but wow, twice the price of what the S9 was when it came out, damnnnnnn, no chance during covid times, maybe in 2021 :p
The s9 was 1599$ when it came out.
Only one mic... im out! Rane 70 it is
Everything you disliked can be fixed with a future firmware update.
Just because they CAN doesn’t mean that they will.
Odd that a Pioneer mixer doesn't support RekordBox as it does Serato...apples to apples. Still a great piece of equipment and innovative.
Flip that around. Rekordbox doesn’t support the pioneer mixer.
@@ClevelandTerry true but still a Pioneer product.
The Pioneer DJM-S11 completely unlocks Rekordbox 6 ... what are you talking about? 🤔
Meh, The more functions the more complains. This dj stuff is becoming just like the gaming world: Nothing but complains. Thats why new djs cant mix for shit!
To each their own.
Pioneer has always been shit for analog
Why can’t we just be honest once in our miserable lifetime and admit that pioneer mixers sound is the worst by far... and that an analog mixer of 30 years ago would sound better.
I had so much hope in this mixer, I purchased it the announcement day and was delivered next day, it’s now in its way back...
S9 Phono pream = 1/10 sound quality
S9 Digital sound = 5/10
S11 phono = 5/10 (Faked to be improved it is still terrible but not as the S9 where quality was non existent)
S11 Digital = 6/10
You said one thing where I more or less agree... pioneer no longer colour the sound.. yes they’ve changed that (good god this was terrible) but they’ve improved (based on this mixer and the XDJ-XZ) but they still faaaaaaaarr behind the worst analog mixer.
One last thing... your digital files will sound better on an ANALOG mixer than digital mixer... you don’t believe this... pick any analog mixer.
I’m so fed up of pioneer. (Rane isn’t any better)
My current setup is...
2 X SL1200GR + ALLEN & HEATH Hybrid mixer (Analog and Digital sound card on a separate circuit) PX5 + Pioneer XP2 for MIDI Pads control... so damn happy
this guy it’s never happy with anything
It’s not my job to be “happy”, it’s my job to inform you of everything so you can make an informed purchasing decision.
