Even though I’m not sure what inspired this video, but this was really interesting and insightful to watch. I first learnt of Habib Jalib in 2019 when I heard his ‘Dastur’ being recited during the anti- Citizenship Amendment Act protests here. I do remember a poetry evening being organised in his honour at my university that I unfortunately missed. This video makes me want to learn more about him; thank you!
What a beautiful research-based academic answer loaded with relevant citations for the confirmation bias of many but, Aftab shb did not deny the poetic brilliance of Jalib shb but categorized him differently. He clarified that Jalib shb is the most popular public poet. Apart from this, I wish our television channels could invite academicians like you for opinions. I wish we could struggle more to get back the virtual spaces of mainstream media in Pakistan to spread reason.

Habib Jalib is perhaps one of the few Pakistanis awarded nationally with the highest foreign title of Bangladesh- the "Friends of Bangladesh Award"that is even by a government who usually do not maintain good relation with Pakistan. Being a Bengali Bangladeshi, I personally got interested in Urdu shayeri because of Laal who often makes songs on Habib Jalib's poetry.

The best thing i learned from this is that the conquerers or elites create an "elite culture" that is an exclusive club based on socio-economic status and/ or ethnicity.

habib jalib is like MCU...very good,popular and entertaining but from a filmmaking pov it falls flat..thats what he said.. and i agree with him.. baqi faiz sahab ne bhi farsi me koi khas shayari nahin ki..aftab iqbal rates him highly..
When I watched that clip of him Habib Jalib, I specifically knew it was in bad taste. But I could not understand the social and cultural context of such a foolish remark. Thanks for putting it in a literary and academic perspective.
