    After spending most of my life in the education system - first through mandatory elementary, middle school, high school, and then through four years of Law School, two years taking a master's, and then studying at a post-graduate level, you can say I've been spending a lot of time getting used to studying, and one thing I wanted to shed some light on are the things that, independently of the time you spend in school or college, you will never learn from your teachers or the education system in itself.

      And it’s funny because I am too but that 4-5 hours still feels like it’s too much. I’m only in my first year of running start. This week was my third week. I’m already staying up super late and feeling like I need to stay up longer and do more. It’s a habit im trying to break because at a certain point of stress and exhaustion, as anyone would, i break down and my depression gets very bad it’s just hard to sleep or take breaks when i feel like I literally cannot because there’s not enough hours in the day

    I would add selecting friends and lovers, self defense skills, how to be good alone, managing a toxic workplace, how to say no, basic cooking skills, simple negotiations, beginning gardening and maybe a bit of simple sewing. None of these would be complicated just enough to give you the confidence to try these things on your own.

    I've been saying for a long time that I think real life financing, budgeting, household management and life skills should be taught in our schools. It's sad that we send 16 year old out into the world with not a fraction of knowledge they need to live day to day lives and to know their rights.

    • @harvey8138

      i think the education system assumes we‘d all be taught these basic life skills by our parents. which of course is silly, right? my parents never really taught me, they just yelled at me for not doing it and then ignored my the rest of the time to watch tv or talk about work and what not.

      Right, but actually in my school there is a subject that you can pick called 21st century skills and we have moral education for all grades so I am glad at least my school has that and hope it gets taught more. I am just 14 in 10th grade but a lot of the things I learned in these classes were new to me.

      To expect a school system to raise you is a silly notion. I was never taught how to do my own finances. So I took it upon myself to learn. My parents taught me the basics, sure. But they also lived paycheck to paycheck and I didn't want to live that way my whole life. Are schools not teaching initiative anymore?

    Great video! So true! I would like to add "basic psychology" to the list. People often walk around with psych (related) issues and are unaware of them until they break down. Recognizing such issues early on can be a life saver. And not just for yourself. You could help others as well.

      I feel like some kind of "work life balance" or "avoiding burn out" or some kind of mental health protection class offered at a high school level to avoid the impending burn out or worse mental break down. I had my first mental breakdown my freshman year of college.

    • @corycianangel6321
      @corycianangel6321 2 ปีที่แล้ว +45

      It's much harder to apply basic psychology if you're in a health-related course. You're very much aware of what's happening to you and to others, but pressure from other subjects can prevent you from applying it to yourself. Even if psychology is included in the curriculum.

    • @ImJustShayeB
      @ImJustShayeB 2 ปีที่แล้ว +46

      @@corycianangel6321 dude that's so accurate. I'd say especially if psychology is in your curriculum because then the narrative is "as long as I'm not hitting this extreme then I'm coping well" not realizing that we are slowly getting toward the"extreme"

      Kat Hall I've observed so many of my classmates talking about mental breakdowns during their pre-med and now as medical students. At the same time, they have to look happy and active on many fronts. Even I experienced mental breakdowns that's unfortunately seen in public, unlike them. That's why I didn't want to pursue medicine, it's more intense and demanding that putting a front is a way to keep one's own sanity.

    I was 16 years old when I got admitted into the university. I have always been a caged child and I didn't go anywhere by myself. When it was time to head to uni, I was scared because I knew I would be alone and have to do things myself and be an "adult". I found it hard to navigate coz I had book smarts but no street smarts. I had a 1.43 gpa in the 1st semester. When I got back home during the holiday, my parents expected me to just know what to do in the real world after being caged all my life and only spending 3-4 months outside of home. I'm 17 years old now in my second year. I'm trying my best and I know that I still have a lot to learn.

    • @ocean_princess

      Wow, that’s amazing (the fact that you got into university 2 years prior than the average teenager). And about the difficulty of being amongst people and having to do things for yourself - that’s very relatable. I was never much of a “people person”, and my parents are not exactly those type of people either, so for most of my life, I was by myself. For the past year I was homeschooled, and then returning to school 2 weeks ago, I found it extremely difficult. You know, the fact of waking up, being somewhere at a certain time, socializing with people that I had little to no interest in. My grades dropped tremendously too, and that lowered my self-esteem even more. I’m smart, and getting perfect grades was never the problem for me, but talking to others was. It was probably more than just coming back to an unexpected amount of tests - it was the fact that I was so used to being alone, that I forgot how to live, how to act, and just how to *be* among society. But I think, that it’s just a matter of time. We’re humans and we’re able to adapt. I believe that you will find a person that you’re comfortable with, someone that matches your energy, you’ll get the grades that you want and that you’ll finally be able to set loose after being “held captive” for so long. Good luck, you can do this!💗

      Also, i’m not sure if you’ve watched Gilmore Girls, but in a way, your (and my own) situation reminds me of Rory…
      She was booksmart, and technically lived in this beautifully-made cage with her mother and rich grandparents by her side. When she got into Yale, it was just a matter of luck of coping, but when she went out into the real world, she was afraid and just couldn’t socialize because she just wasn’t used to it. She took criticism too close to heart, and just couldn’t take it.
      But i’m sure that we’re not like Rory, and that we’ll be able to do this!
      Btw, just out of interest, what university did you get into (it’s okay if you’re not comfortable with saying so)?

    Resting and knowing your limits/boundaries is so important. I dropped out of grad school during the final year of my masters. I barely remember anything from those classes because my mental health was so poor trying to juggle classes and a full time job that I retained next to nothing. I also realized that I didn’t really care to get my masters, I just felt like I had to. 1.5 years later, and my mental health has significantly improved and I never once regretted my decision. I really have to disagree with one thing. You don’t have to work one job or career for 40 years, that’s a very depressive thought that life is stagnant, I literally got depressed from this when I was 20 because I thought my life will always be the same. I‘m currently an artist and maybe I will do that forever but maybe I‘m going to be an author, a café owner, a librarian whatever in 10 years life is forever changing and surprises you around every corner. Never settle for something that you are not passionate about it’s never worth it. Always follow what you love life is so much more than work.

    Love this, there is a lot of delusion around how important college is, but in reality soft skills, home economics and stuff like that are just way more important. School is just an extra on top, not the other way around

    It's really sad that schools don't teach these skills around the world. I'm finnish and during my high school i was well educated in both personal financing and healthy habits, both for life and studying. We also have classes for practicing job skills and in universities, the companies and students collaborate a lot. If these aren't common around the world, maybe this is why our school system is thought to be so good

    So so true. In University I overworked myself, didn't have good sleep and didn't manage my time wisely. I broke down, and didn't continue Law. I love the advicr that I have to define success and go after that.

    Thank you for making this video. I've been saying for years that we don't learn the essentials for living in the real world in school. If I can add one thing it would be added to the first point. How to deal with burnout and depression. My graduation project was all about a buddy system for people who struggled during their education. I found that a lot of people get burnouts and also depression. I've even been notified that someone had taken their own life in their first year. So yeah, learning how to deal with depression is just as important as a burnout.

Then slowly made steps towards better health and now i am looking for ways to create a life for my future self. Thank you for this video! It helped me set better focus on what to get going doing, I hope i will find myself in a good position in the future and wishing everyone else blessing and luck on their side too! take care

    Tive uma crise de ansiedade generalizada por causa de um exame da faculdade, em sequência de ataques de pânico e de uma depressão sombria que já estava inculcada em mim desde a infância. De uma discussão severa com uma pessoa, tal me provocou um AVC no cérebro à idade de 25. Cefaleias durante mais de seiscentos dias permanentes e o olhar praticamente parado. Choro a ver o vídeo na parte do burnout. No meu caso foi a morte cerebral. Estou a recuperar a três anos com muita medicação. Sou uma pessoa que trabalha não em Direito mas numa loja de roupa pois não tenho a capacidade de estar concentrada e me deslocar de veículo para a universidade ou para a O.A.. Era a melhor aluna de Solicitadoria, depois fui para Direito ( onde também era das melhores). Mas a pressão dos pais e falta de socialização ditaram o meu fim. Que o meu caso sirva de exemplo para todos! Obrigado Mariana pelos teus excelentes vídeos...sempre me aperfeiçoei contigo, ainda andavas tu a tirar Direito! E lembrem-se com fé e esperança em Jesus, tudo se consegue resolver. Ele sabe o melhor para nós!

    i love how you talk about learning about financial literacy, Most of us don't understand much in the beginning, If your job isn't in finance make yourself read a little about it each week. Google terms you don't understand. Don't beat yourself up over not understanding everything right away. Overtime you will get it. I like to think of it at taking sips of information on a regular basis. But try to really learn how to invest for retirement and start by your late twenties at the latest. Everybody can retire but you have to take control of your finances and make it a goal early in life. And don't try to retire too early, A healthy work/life balance keeps people connected with the world.

    What about becoming a physician? A lot of people dream about helping the community by practicing medicine. I know it’s not for everyone but I have a couple of friends who have pursued the dream of saving lives medically. That takes dedication and a lot of formal education.

    • @mariana-vieira
      @mariana-vieira  2 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      It's the same principle -- if YOUR definition of success is becoming a physician to help the community by practicing medicine, definitely go for it :) Once again - it's all relative.

There are some yt videos on it if you would like to learn more😊 I've been kind of struggling lately with what I want to learn and teach myself. So this video is so helpful because I would like to know these things now. Tysm

    Burnout is such a real thing, I remember the last 2 years of my Uni I didn't get a single day off. I studied during the weekdays at Uni and worked (at times) 3 part time jobs. Even during the summer I took on unpaid internships and continued my part times. Safe to say my final year didn't go so well, and my results dipped down.
