    I couldn't find strawberry plants this year so I took some seeds from a store bought strawberry. They are doing very good, but will not make it outside. I have them in a grow tent under LED lighting, and they are at the point of needing to be transplanted. Should I transplant them to bigger pots, or can they be kept in the 2 x 2 seed trays until spring. thanks

    • @ChristasGarden
      @ChristasGarden  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is a fungus that thrives in moist warm conditions. It will kill off your seedlings. Keeping your soil lightly moist, not sopping wet, and using a fan will help prevent the disease.

    Hello, Can I still planting strawberry seed around this time of the year? You mentioned about the grow light, how long do you have the grow light to be on until germinated. I’m from New York

    • @ChristasGarden
      @ChristasGarden  22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You can start them from seeds now, they don't take long to germinate. I can't remember how long they took but I think it was less than a couple of weeks. They may not produce fruit this year, but they will next year, it will depend on the variety and when you get them planted out.

    • @ChristasGarden

      I don't because it usually causes mold and fungus to grow. I try to keep an eye on things and make sure the soil is slightly moist to prevent seeds from drying out.

    make your own potting mix, would be gardeners should know how to do this, and seeds don't need potting soil, pure vermiculite works and holds moisture and its recommended to take the strawberries off first year plants to encourage root development

    • @ChristasGarden
      @ChristasGarden  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Using vermiculite for seedlings vs potting soil is a matter of preference, so is making your own soil vs purchasing bagged soil. Do what works for you.

      Last summer we grew strawberries from seed, and now they are all over in the garden. There are several batches at different ages, and we even got some of the pineberries and ones with red flowers, and are cross-pollinating all of them together. It's an amazingly fun experiment, just make sure to start them often and from different sources, and especially in the next few weeks, start as many different ones as you can so they can transplant into the garden in late summer/early fall. Also start them in the off season, to make sure some are everbearing.

    • @ChristasGarden
      @ChristasGarden  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They are fine with wind, once they have been hardened off. What I am saying is, during the hardening off process, especially at the beginning, strong wind can cause the leaves to get wind burned.

      I had a few things going on last year and didn't post an update video. Sorry about that. The plants turned out really nice and even produced fruit the first year! The flowers are dark pink, light pink, and white. The strawberries are on the small side but very good. They are out on my porch right now looking rough because it's January, but I expect them to make a nice comeback in the spring.

    When to first fertilise them

    • @ChristasGarden
      @ChristasGarden  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I didn't fertilize them until I planted them in containers, it was two months after I started the seeds. They were starting to look like they needed some fertilizer at that point, with the leaves not being as dark green but they still looked really good. I would say maybe fertilize them at 6 weeks or so if you want to. I would use something with a very low percentage of NPK and dilute it even more. It is easy to burn young seedlings. Seedlings really don't need anything extra for the first few weeks.
