Hey Mr. Giant, I found your channel about a month ago and since then I’ve watched almost all the videos from your accident forward. I was in an accident on 5/24, the day before yours. I was riding to work, just crossed from PA into NJ and at about 7am, a deer came bolting out in front of me. I was doing 45mph when we hit. I landed hard on my left side. I was concerned I broke my hip. I am 58yo btw. I was fully geared up and didn’t feel anything else was seriously wrong, but I guess my left foot ended up under the bike. The thick leather riding boots I was wearing did not get cut or punctured, but just above my ankle, there was V-shaped laceration about 3” long that took 21 stitches to close. One doctor described it as a crush injury, all that weight on my boot and foot, my skin was the weak point where something had to give.
At 8 months now, my left foot is still sore. The wound is closed, but numb and still somewhat swollen. I can do what I need to do without much pain, but it’s uncomfortable at times. Amazingly, I had no broken bones! Both hips were thoroughly bruised. The whole experience was surreal. Watching your video gave me chills. The thought occurred to me, what if I ended up like you? It scared the H out of me. I started riding 10yo ago, as a “last resort” to cope with the grief of losing my son in 2012. Riding has been the most amazing therapy which I love, and I’m just not ready to hang it up yet. My Harley Dyna Low Rider was totaled, I replaced it with a beautiful Fat Boy 114. I took my first ride about 6 weeks later.
Based on my experience, I don’t think it would have made a difference what you had on your foot, unless it was a hard shell sport bike type of boot, basically like a ski boot. I have watched my video 100 times and I just can’t figure out what happened to my left foot, I’ll never really know. Sounds like you have the same frustration.
As I’ve watched your videos I have been pulling for you, so glad to see your progress and you are riding again. Riding will probably never bethe same for me, I’m SO cautious now. Stay safe from now on!

Hey Dave, just now seeing your comment as it was put into a Spam folder by TH-cam (they do not allow links in comments) Sorry to hear about your crash, but glad you are still riding. Glad you captured it on video to show how quickly it can happen to all of us - Don

A solid piece as a spacer with the holes in the correct position would make it much more solid. You could use the original mount as a template for the solid piece spacer.

      I agree👍
A piece of aluminum the right thickness will work, but it's going to be a lot of lateral stress on the mounting bolts.
I broke the foot peg mount on my XT500C on a jump (decades and decades ago).
      Had to weld it back.
Pegs take a lot of downward force at 90° to the axis of the bolts.
I'm thinking this might entail getting the piece sized right, then get someone to heliarc or tig the spacer block to the aluminum mount?

Ya know.....I thought about bleeping all the filth out, but there was sooooo much.....I was just glad to have a little competition.....and shade? Would the result been any different with beer added? I wonder, as this simple task was shockingly difficult?

@ I thought it was pretty straight forward, now we just need $100k in machine shop lathes and mills and tooling!

Use Grade 8 bolts. Carry spare bolts and washers. Also cotter pins are a pain. I find using side cutters, dikes, angle cutters, whatever you call em, to remove cotter pins. You get better leverage. Needle nose pliers flex too much

Cotter pins are a pain indeed, I like to use R clips, you can get assorted size boxes on the cheap from China

Are using that bike Jack you got a few weeks ago? I’m 76 and can’t pick up my 1200GS anymore and I need a solution as I ride solo often. Keep up with the videos, I really enjoy seeing riders overcoming physical problems like we have.

Why not put a thick plate held in place by the two side stand retainer bolts, then drill 2 holes where needed to take the foot peg ?

    • @MotoGiant
      @MotoGiant  9 วันที่ผ่านมา

a simple plate would only a small step forward for a lot of effort - would rather put effort into moving the pegs down and forward - the washers are a proof of concept

I think you have the same idea as me, Austen. Bolt a plate that is the needed thickness to the outside of the black piece below the original foot peg mounting holes. Don't use the original foot peg mounting holes for anything. Run the plate from the center stand spring location all the way out to the brake pedal. Use longer grade 8 bolts to replace the three bolts currently in that location to accommodate whatever thickness of plate needed to move the peg away from the bike. This would let the foot peg be located away from the bike and as far forward as possible. Is that what you are suggesting @austen.5756?

short of you magically gaining 5000+lbs your not going to hurt those bolts.
