Caroline Myss - The Starving Artist (The Power of Archetypes)

  • Hi, Everybody -
I decided to do the starving artists today because I went grocery shopping, and the gentleman that was checking me out, he just oozed the starving artist archetype. And so I said to him, so you're an artist, ha? And he said, Yes. And I said, are you going to follow that career? Are you going to do something about it? Sometimes I can't stop myself...
I hope you enjoy this exploration of the Starving Artist archetype. I'll see you next week.
    Love,
    Caroline

I think about Van Gogh a lot. The poor man never sold anything, maybe one painting. Emily Dickinson’s poem were finaly printed to the public a very long time after she was gone. Imagine if these great artists stoped creating because there was no income coming from their art. What a big loss it would of been for humanity. As Caroline said it so well, we just have to create . Art doesn’t belong only to ourselves, but once it’s out there , I think it belongs to everyone. Thank you so much Caroline may God bless you.

Vincent Van Gogh was not poor.! He was never the “starving artist”.! He was continuously financially funded and supported by his brother Theo, all throughout his creative journey. Vincent received more money per month from his brother.. than the average factory worker earned, back in his time. Throughout history, there have been “many” artists who never sold a painting in their lifetime.. who truly struggled financially, and would be considered more so as true starving artists.

By the same token, Emily Dickinson never left home. Lived with her father's support all her life.
Same with the Brontes. They never left home.
Or, Christina Rossetti: never left home.
They were all, however, committed to their art for art's sake.

Art & Design have defined my life and career path, but often felt like siblings that ‘duke it out’_ rather than be complementary.
A wake up call via a major health event in 2016 put me on notice🎉 to tame my reptilian ego with its limiting beliefs and overwhelming expectations of absolute mastery in both arenas! (woof!)
Historically, I felt I must choose between being a ‘starving artist’ or self reliant well-paid competent designer. ❤️‍🩹
Now Into my 7th year of ongoing recovery, my lack of stamina has brought me to my knees with the pure surrender of humility.
Just today, I felt my heart and soul say ‘YES’ to simply be AUTHENTIC and true to myself in my own personal synthesis of both art & design _😢 FREE from the burden of hideous expectations.❤🎉
Thank you, Caroline, for sharing your clarity and the freedom you found. Thank you for your wisdom shared in Anatomy of the Spirit:
“We each are destined to journey inward on a solo flight.” ❤️🙏✨

My son worked as a high school art teacher after college to pay the rent, etc. He encouraged his students to do what Caroline says - just do your art! He worked summers with urban youth creating public art projects. He nurtured and supported their dreams. Suddenly, his message to students hit home for himself and he lived on a shoestring to save money to live for some months creating art. His summer work had given him experience with grant writing. He was awarded a small grant and then another and another and 8 years later, he has installations in numerous cities. He creates art for the love of the aesthetics he envisions and if it is appreciated, he is paid to install, if not, he has a storage unit and garage full of beloved art he created!

Having worked at a university as a secretary for years I can tell you that the hierarchical line you crossed with the professor DOES NOT GET CROSSED! Kudos to you! Academics generally rely on their intellect, they are elevated and given everything because of their brain power, and their interpersonal and emotional awareness skills are completely atrophied as a result.

I‘m one of those artists. When I announced to my parents as I was leaving home to pursue my dream of being an artist, my going away gift was” But how will you make a living?” My response was “I’ll be a prostitute in New Orleans. “ ( which is where I was headed) thing is, I was serious. That was my plan B which I really didn’t want to use but…I’m 77 now and so far my prostitute has been a fantastic guardian. Following you has also helped me unstick more than I care to remember. Thanks for this and all those other times. Oh and so far, I have been able to paint my way through it all.

You actually "sprinkled fairy dust" on me too once. I had no idea who you were just that you were my good friend's beloved Aunt that knew Flea for some reason. Years later as I made my way to the center of myself I found you again. And I remember the way you looked at me, like I had something to contribute. When I doubt myself sometimes I think of the way you looked at me. It does make a difference. Thank you so much Ms. Myss! I hope to see you again one day!

I love you, Caroline Myss! You border brash and sassy! and I have learned so much from you through the years. I'm a medical intuitive also, I discovered this while starting my last career as a hairstylist in the poshest neighborhood in Denver. Talk about attitude. All my senses turned on practically at the same time. In order to find balance, I served the poorest most distressed citizens. I discovered that there is not one person on the planet that doesn't have at least one thing they struggle with and for some it is daily and the only thing that separated the people was their $$'s I found amazing artists labeled street people. Believe me I soon realized I learned more from those "street" artists than the ones who created all the "modern" art. The conversations were less predictable, and their stories were luminating.
Individuals I meet where I have had the luxury of engaging in a real conversation always tell me I should start a TH-cam channel. ME: What would I talk about? THEM: What we just talked about. I have never charged a dime for "talking" to "energetically" help them transform their thinking. This morning before I tuned into this video, I saw a pile of papers I had written (I have a chest full of paper and notebooks of stories, thoughts and things), then I heard Spirit say, "look through your papers" and I knew exactly how to proceed. Is it scary? heck yes but making the decision that all I had to do was look at all my notes and all the topics would be there. The idea of going live was so in front of me because then I wouldn't have the stress of downloading waiting etc. all those things that cause me to procrastinate. When I get opportunities to find the artist behind the counter and have a small conversation is when I don't even recognize myself as the person who has something to say that will touch someone's soul.
Love and gratitude to your teachings and encouragement.

Sometimes you outdo yourself Caroline ❤ And, for what it's worth, sometimes the 'blank page' looks for all the world like a profound injustice -- I ended up having to leave my home and live in an obscure rented room when a judge refused to issue a restraining order against a then-partner who had come close to taking my life -- that was 35 years ago and it was the time in that room that utterly changed the course of my life.

Wouldn't it be cool if it was the "Upper middle class Artist"? OR, "The highly respected even though you're poor artist"? Hahaha..
Carolyn these mini workshops are awesome, thank you so so much! I feel like I'm receiving such a precious gift!
I'm a starving artist through and through. It is challenging, the money thing. The juxtaposition of community having reverence for the artist vs disrespecting us if we're not wealthy, and not honoring the prices we put on our work, is really a challenge. I mean, life is a challenge of course, but I'm speaking of frustrations with having the archetype. For me, art runs through my veins, AND I have multiple disabilities... So, "omg you should sell those", just isn't possible for me...The assumption, by many, that I can just easily crack out more of whatever "masterpiece" AND get paid for every single thing, isnt even a real possibility. I am constantly disappointing people. I don't mean to sound whiny, I just think it's important to speak to part of the reality of having this archetype!
I AM proud of myself for having the courage to keep going and honoring this part of me. I need to stay focused on that part:)
Fellow SA's, making the world a more beautiful or evocative place is truly a gift for all of us. AND, all ya'll artists who say you aren't, stop that and keep creating!!!

*Jane Eyre* is a wonderful novel & a wonderful character.
      .
      PS
I wonder - how did she survive those relatives and then go on through further obstacles to thrive?
She had the spirit of her creator within.
      Just riffing here.
      Free associating.
      .
Other gifts: Her dear heart. Lack of self-blame: she didn't believe that she was the awful person she was told she was. She didn't blame others either .....
Jane Eyre did not have fears, entitlements, or expectations. (But she stood up for herself & spoke out when necessary to preserve a sense of reality, to remain sane in mad or unusual situations. )
      That's for sure 😍

I’m just learning to let go of expectations now at the age of 24, like you said I’ve realized all of the things that I know or that I am good at have unfolded humbly and organically it’s almost always by accident . Not through strategy or planning or envisioning things but through instinct and curiosity. It’s kept me grounded . My new strategy is to envision each step of the process in depth rather than drawing up this elaborate goal that I have no means of executing in reality .

It occurs to me, the incredible alchemy of the archetypes. These defensive behaviors we think are strengths become overworked and limit our own freedom. But then there is art which often becomes more vivid in suffering. But I think this is because the only time man really clings to his imagination is when things are hopeless, that is when his dreams become really appetizing and clear. Each Bronte sister potentially would never have created their greatest works if not for the consciousness’ development when it is conducted in the face of adversity. Such a thought provoking topic ❤

Thank you!!! I have put that artist in myself to sleep long ago. I actually did sell a painting, and I did have a little show, unfortunately, I sabotaged myself. It’s still there, making it’s way back to me. You just reminded me❤️

'start from where you are, do with what you have. as a blank paper. however it is you feel. your art best expresses itself. just do that. and don't then say who's going to like this..and where can i sell it, just work on you art and generate that energetic atmosphere around you. think of yourself as an artist. see yourself as an artist. do your art. don't tell yourself i need to have a gallery. don't say who's gonna like it. if you like it it's good enough. don't starve your own creativity. don't ever do that. what you want to starve is your sense of entitlement. think of all the wonderful things happened to you that you didn't see coming. those are blessings that the universe just provides along the way. one of the greatest things u can do is the practice of humility. just humble up and say i'll do what i have to do. most important is to follow those creative instincts. that are within you all the time. and not listen to the language of reptiles. that might often hold your back. '

Thank you SO MUCH for this Caroline!!! This is SO helpful and just what I needed to hear, just at the right time. A BLESSING. And a way forward. Time to "humble up" and remind myself of the many blessings I have received over the years and continue to receive going forward, beginning with this video on the Starving Artist archetype. You have helped me many times (I am an All Access member) but none moreso than this little video, which has resolved many things for me. It is as if you were speaking directly to me.

Could've been me in that grocery store...
I have done my art. Somehow, things opened up. When a door slammed on me, I would do a great painting. Here..now...it's s a little harder. Hence, I'm here for your unabashed wisdom
BTW, I did my stints in corporate academia, it is awful.

Thank you for this message! It came at the right time! I am an artist at the point of a blanc page. The moment I create my art I have reptiles coming in. They are thoughts like: How I am going to sell my art? Is it good enough, cool enough? (for whom?) These thoughts are taking me away from my original source of creativity. You said it so wisely, that it starts with liking ones own art. If I worry too much about others liking my art, I loose contact to my own liking. Your video inspired me to be careful about my own "art-seed and growing art- plant" and to realize, how fragile it still is. It can still be easily eaten away by reptiles. That happend to me a lot before, especially in art school, when I built up great expectations and arrogance ( to compensate my insecurity) and lost contact to myself and my authentic creativity. I want keep that littele art plant of mine now safe and secure and nourish it. Thank you for reminding! 🌱🌱🌱
