    Support and Full on-leash control videos using the halti collar in our members area. Join our mailing list on our site to stay informed of free training videos. This video gives an intro to the head halter type training collars such as the gentle leader and halti. Teresa uses a halti in this video. She gives a quick review of the head halter type collars and shows how to get started using one. We have videos on how to get better on-leash control with the halti by using the collar to teach the formal commands: heel, sit, down, climb, and place. I hope you enjoy the video.

    This is so helpful. No one takes the time to show how to do many of these techniques. As a new dog owner (now 3 years), I still have behavior to correct. I hope this helps our family.

    After two years of being jerked, pulled and dragged by my 75 pound standard poodle, and MONTHS of reinforcment training that improved, but did not stop it, I bought a Halti head harness. It INSTANTLY stopped his pulling. He goes to the end of his leash and slows down as soon as he feels pressure from the collar. This has made the quality of my life and his infinitely better. I highly recommend this product. He likes me to put it on because he knows it means he gets a nice walk. He's smart, so it only took putting it on twice with a treat before he did it without resisting.

      @@azote2039 You are assuming, maybe you should ask whether that person did teach their dog to heel and whether their dog did or did not get exercise.

    yes, the black dog was brand new to the halti, so we were showing what you might expect with some dogs. The brown dog was conditioned to the halti previously. The halti requires patience to get the dog used to.

    Thank you for this video!! The first time I tried to use a halti for my crazy cocker spaniel (following the absolutely rubbish training instructions on the packet), she totally freaked out. I felt terrible and was scared I would break the trust between us by using it further, but after following your technique, she is walking like an absolute dream after less than an hours work! Thank you!

    My friend and I have litter mates. We live thousands of miles from each other, but both dogs are so alike in character, even the way they sleep ! They are standard poodles; therefore, have the 'prey' oriented hunting instinct. Any little distraction and my dog pulls and barks and wants to get whatever it is...my dog's litter mate uses the Halti Collar and the results are short of miraculous ! I am getting one today...cannot wait to see if she has the same results. Thanks for such an informative, step-by-step introduction !

    I have a one year old, 120 pound Alaskan Malamute that has over the past year done everything he can to yank me and my wife around on walks. To the point where it was work to take him for what should be an enjoyable outdoor excursion. I just bought one of these halti collars and he's a different dog. Calmly walks besides me and changes direction when I do, no more fighting and pulling and it happened within 1 session, instantly.

    My dog is a puuuuulller. She's only 8 months which is understandable, but not food motivated when excited and hard to train. Got this today and tried what you said for literally two minutes and she was already sticking her head through the loop before I could grab another treat for her. I'm so excited to be able to walk nicely with her, I thought it would take longer. I'm going to keep doing the training for 2 weeks before putting it on her fully and then only short walks for maybe a week or more depending on how she acts but this is great!:)

    I have a hunter's red collar with an ID tag with phone number on. I keep it so loose that Eva can slip out if it if she gets hung up.
    Had a friend whose dog jumped over the porch rail and hung itself, it wont happen to Eva. She has never tried to pull out of it, even though she knows she can. I always slip it over her head when I take it off for bath time. Up unlit now I trained her to be my best friend and to be herself.
    Now that she has decided she's a personal protection dog, I feel I need to get more control over that so she won't get me sued.
    You guys are The One Stop Shop when it comes to dog training. And I have an easy dog to work with.😁👍

    This is all just fine and dandy if you have a large harness. My dog's one arrived today and it impossible for my hands to go through the nose part. I just put it on him and started feeding him treats and clicking like crazy lol.. He did OK and he is a Basenji. I left it on him five mins then took it off ill do it for a few days before taking him out.

    These are a life saver! TBH I thought they looked silly and kind of degrading but my Koda is now 60+ #’s of solid muscle and I got tired of being dragged all over the place. I couldn’t walk him far enough to burn off his energy! But after 1 session, and a lot of cheese 🧀, he is walking like a pro! He has already figured out how to slip it off his nose, so I do wish there was a head strap, bit the collar part stays on ok, although sometimes he gets that part in his mouth and tries to eat it. That’s where the cheese comes in lol. All in all great results for the first day! Thank you 🙏

    I think this works good if used correctly. I saw a girl today with a young Black Lab in training to be a service dog. He was only about a year to 2 years old. I saw them earlier, so I know the Halti must have been on all day. The dog was whimpering and crying and trying to rub the Halti off off on her. She explained to me that he was mad at her for putting it on. I don't think she was doing it right. The dog seemed to never feel any release. Every time she stopped walking he would plop down at her feet and put his head down as if he was depressed and exhausted. I think it was the only way that he got out of the pressure. I work with horses and letting go of pressure at a good point is very important. With this young dog, I think he needed shorter intervals with the Halti on, and a lot more release when he was being good.

    I adopted a dog from the SPCA and she had a terrible time with pulling on her martingale collar. Now, according to this, I put the Halti on her waaay too fast without conditioning her to it properly. She fought the halter a very little bit, but when we started to walk, she automatically went to a near perfect heel. It was almost an obedience ring quality performance. Is this a common thing or is it more likely that my dog has been exposed to the Halti before I had her?

    Lol that dog, who clearly is used to the halti, is thinking Christmas has come early with all those treats. I know of course she has just used this for training those who have never used their halti on a dog of course and their dog may be oversensitive to it, so it is overkill :-)
    When I used a halti on my dog for the first time, I just brushed the halti gently over his face a couple of times. That was enough. However I was assertive and calm when I placed it. I then waited a few minutes with it on at home before going out. If you are calm your dog is more likely not to feel threatened. I am all for dog treats, however I do think they are overused sometimes to overcompensate for our own lack of assertiveness and calm energy, which is the biggest influence on a dog's trust.

    My dog Dosent like a halti. We put it on her and she wouldn t start freaking out! We give her treats and everything but she wouldn t stop. The only thing that worked was choke chain. Choke chains won't do any damage as long as you use them properly :). I'm sure you know that since you're a great trainer! :D

    • @kittyvampireparty
      @kittyvampireparty 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Muddy Pawz you’re probably going way too fast. First, work on actually having them putting it on themselves, like it’s shown in the video.

    • @maisy3308
      @maisy3308 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      DuckBot No. She Dosent like things on her face. We have tried that she will go around the haltie and try and get it. She won't put her mouth near it. Plus she heals now and is fine on leash thanks to the check chain. I think its better. I only use positive reinforce ment and don't use the check chain (you probably call it a choke chain) in a negative way. I do give her a quick correction (just a little tug) to put her back in focus and say good girl. When people say choke chain I'm like why would you want to choke your dog?! Its for corrections! Its safe if you use it properly and I think its very good and affective because without the haltie that dog would probably pull, where as when my dog toffee is fully trained (100%) She won't need it anymore and can walk like a normal dog.

    Once again the dog they always use for training is German Shepherd's. These dogs are one of the easiest and most attentive dogs to train. They pay very close attention to what you were asking. They love to work and they love to learn. That's when a dog has its head at the height of your waist it is so easy to walk and give them treats at the same time. Try bending over giving treats to a little dog while you're trying to walk they constantly want to jump up and get the food out of your hand. That bending over is a pain. Every training video I watch always uses a German Shepherd

    Halti versus prong? When do you use which one?

    • @shirleyens7707
      @shirleyens7707 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Prefer Halti over Prong as it doesn't hurt the dog which is always best. I am dog sitting a large 5 yr old dog for a month. He has not been leash trained and pulls horribly. I just got the Halti a few days ago, got him used to it and took him for our first walk today using the Halti. Incredible results. We went for 30 minutes and he behaved amazingly well. It is icy and dangerous to walk when he pulls.
      I have not owned a dog since I was a child and have never trained a dog. We are getting along famously. I will happily dog sit again if I can walk him without pulling.

    I have a question, let's say a dog pulls and lunges and I decide to use a halti to stop the problem. Does this mean that I will have to use the halti for the rest of the dogs life. Surely the goal is to be able to walk a dog with a standard collar. Just a question I thought of.

    • @k9-1

    Does it hurt to give the treat when they grab your hand?

    • @MaZEEZaM
      @MaZEEZaM 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should tell your dog off in a stern voice if they grab your hand and not give them the treat. What you want to do is to hand it to them slowly saying Gently, if your dog goes to grab the treat quickly you pull back and say NO and then try again till your dog slowly goes to take the treat. Essentially you only want to reinforce good behavior with a treat or simply a pat and praise.

    • @mprie4

      You only leave it on for keeping your dog under control while walking.
      We would put it on inside the house, walk to car (long walkway), remove for car ride, put back on to go inside store (Lowes etc), remove again for ride home. For walks down the road/sidewalk/yard, remove when you return inside.
      *You must first train your dog to stay inside the car when you open the door though-an easy task for a doberman.

    What kind of dog is Dawson? He looks just like my dog who was a rescue. All I’m told is the mom was a black lab

    The thing is when I put it on my pitbulls puppy and she wants to go a different way, she’ll back up and start thrashing her head and choking herself, it’s scary and very frustrating

    What I don't understand is why a halti collar is used at all. Any dog can be very well trained and still be triggered or react on leash, at which time they may lunge forward with a great deal of power and this will just cause the head to be cranked with a lot of force which isn't good on the dog's C-spine. I'd go with a Jim Hodges metal buckle martingale style collar also connected with a Herm Sprenger prong collar any day of the week over any collar of this style.

      The potential for a neck injury is a drawback of the head halter-style collars. The pros and cons of all training collars should always be considered for each individual person and dog, which is why we always try to teach the safest way to use each type to respect personal preferences.

    any harness or collar should be taken off once they get home or are in an area where its safe to be taken off leash (not dog parks).

      Rahen Patel Show you will be a responsible dog owner. Wanting is not enough. Too many adults buy dogs for their kids without considering the responsibility and hard work. Which is one of the reasons rescue centres are full of dogs that are either abandoned or given up. That dog is for life and needs commitment. You show your dad you understand this by putting in a lot of hard work helping a friend, neighbour or family member with their dog.

      No, it's not. Food rewards are the easiest, quickest, and most effective way to reinforce new behavior. Once the behavior is learned you fade the constant food rewards and replace with other "real life" reinforcement such as praise and play instead.

    What about a dog that can't be distracted by treats once walking? He is relentless and won't stop until he scratches it off. Everything else requiring desensitization works well but not once we are trying to walk. Thanks anyone.

      Hey noticed you haven't got a reply!
      Speaking from experience, I often find that if there's a problem with the walk, there's a problem with your overall pack-relationship with your dog. What this means is that its a root problem with yourself not being the pack leader, as opposed to "he really just doesn't like the lead" (which could be the case but very slight).
      I'd recommend checking out Doggy Dan on theonlinedogtrainer.com/
      You can apply for a 3 day $1 trial ;)
      I'd sign up and look through his "5 golden rules" on being the pack leader. With those in place - almost anything should be sweet!
