It’s not even a peanut tank, got 2.5gal and ironheads have better fuel mileage than big twins, so i can cruise 130-150 miles per tank 😁 thanks for watching!!

Rich in the rear to cool off that one and lean in front for better combustion. Air cooled rely on rich for cooling the valves and so off. Not allowed with newer bikes due to emission mitigation. Nice adventure.

Ya got to remember that a lot of trips in the 80’s had about 15 minutes of dreaming and 20 minutes of packing before leaving. Not overly responsible but that’s the way it went
my best motorcycle adventures were on a stripped down shovelhead flh, complete with rain and mechanical issues. thanks for bringing us along on your travels.
Many riders only show the good stuff. I like the real all in stuff. Bikes need some love and so do we when it rains like hell. The use of a hotel room boot dryer can’t be replaced sometimes. Great video as usual.

9:25 I dry Tshirts, socks and pants like this. I zipty all opening but one shut, then feed a hairdryer through the remaining opening. With the hairdryer on hot the garment really balloons and is dry very quickly.
G'day Sally, are you sure it was the bike that was shootin flames and backfiring.😂 Put a garbage bag over your pack and I always have some bread bags in my jacket pocket to cover my gloves and you could use them to cover sneaker,s as well. If there is one thing I've learnt in my forty eight years of riding is be prepared for all weather conditions when I set out on a ride, we can get four seasons in one day in my part of the world. That's a migthy looking rig at 10:33 minutes parked up there. Cheers Sally and thanks for taking us along for the ride, still watching from NZ. 👍
Normally we are more prepared, but were limited with space on the ironheads lol! And yeah that rig was a heavy hauler, super cool dudes, waiting for extra flaggers for state lines lol, we always get to chatting up truckers and hearing crazy road stories 🤣 cheeers!!!

Me and a buddy one September, back in the 80s were riding north to Calgary, was 34* and raining passed a Mounty and he just looked at us and shook his head. Got into Banff and it had snowed. I was a lot tougher back then.

If I remember right.. Harley themselves put a super glide tank on the sportster and called it a Roadster .. rare as hens teeth here in good old … all older Harley’s are .. a lot you see here are later inports with prices to match..
The handlebar blankets, we got in Mexico when we went to the El Diablo Run. Better quality than the blankets like these they sell em all over truck stops in the US.

I rode the 50 from the other direction - East Bay to Salt Lake - on my Sportster about a decade ago. Took 120 through Yosemite, then 395 up to 50. I remember riding through a stretch of 50 where I hadn't seen another vehicle on the rode for quite a while, thinking, "well, if I break down here, that'd kinda suck." I rode past the International, but didn't stop cuz I was on a tight time schedule. Regret that, now. I don't live in that part of the country anymore, but after seeing this, maybe I'll try to get back there.

Absolutely Love to see riders on motorcycles that don't have huge fairings , windshields, luggage racks, etc. Next thing bagger riders will do is install doors and a roof on their bike! Baggers are just two wheel Minivans in my book!

Always remember the Journey! Even after the next 'Dusk till Dawn' Haunted Inn dust up. lol. Events are often ruined by a few bad apples. The porta john will look better on the other side of the lot anyway just shove it over there. ;-) Ride safe and have a blast photographing mean people who don't know how to have a Motorcycle Event. Great work documenting what you have to do to ride one of these monster Ironhead's to distant lands. :D And sometimes even away from the mean Sheriff.
I had a 81 XLH took it everywhere put 78,000 miles on it sold it in 87 and regret it to this day. Bought my FXR that same year and that one ill keep, it now has 185,00 miles on it. When I see your trips it makes me relive my youth and keeps me going today, keep it up and be safe.

Yup, open air bleed and I’ve blown some gaskets lol, she is due for a top end rebuild once the cold comes lol. I just said screw it, and had to pull over every 60 miles lol i think it was detonating cuz it would happen more when it was hotter.
Ironheads, might be a bit finicky, but they will always get you home and no other bike or Harley sounds or feels like one! Inherently not much different from the evo's!
I have ridden ironheads from NY out to Nebraska, to Marin Cou ty, CA, back to NY. Just needed points and push rod adjustments!!!!! They are Great Bikes!!!!!

I used jumbo trash bags. 3 of them. Cut hole for your head , then wrap the other around my legs. Duct tape them. Looks fun. Be safe.

Did you tighten down your head bolts a bit to stop the oil leak
Cranked down the rockerboxes and all engine mounts and she was good to go! The head bolts are all tight, but that gasket aint holding up 😂
In England we pack all our gear in plastic trash bags for waterproofing 😎

Yep, those open air bleeds on the intake manifold and carb are screwing you up for sure.

Absolutely Love to see riders on motorcycles that don't have huge fairings , windshields, luggage racks, etc. Next thing bagger riders will do is install doors and a roof on their bike! Baggers are just two wheel Minivans in my book!

I have a 2020 Sportster Iron. Do you carry extra fuel on your long rides? I always worry about not being able to get to the next gas station.
Yes we both carry extra gas, but honestly didnt need it. 2.5 gallon tank and we can go over 125 miles per tank. Gotta love Sporty fuel milage! 😁
Always remember the Journey! Even after the next 'Dusk till Dawn' Haunted Inn dust up. lol. Events are often ruined by a few bad apples. The porta john will look better on the other side of the lot anyway just shove it over there. ;-) Ride safe and have a blast photographing mean people who don't know how to have a Motorcycle Event. Great work documenting what you have to do to ride one of these monster Ironhead's to distant lands. :D And sometimes even away from the mean Sheriff.

I had a 81 XLH took it everywhere put 78,000 miles on it sold it in 87 and regret it to this day. Bought my FXR that same year and that one ill keep, it now has 185,00 miles on it. When I see your trips it makes me relive my youth and keeps me going today, keep it up and be safe.

Thanks Ed!! We normally do 400 miles comfortably a day. But it can be less if repairs or bad weather gets in the way.

Yup, open air bleed and I’ve blown some gaskets lol, she is due for a top end rebuild once the cold comes lol. I just said screw it, and had to pull over every 60 miles lol i think it was detonating cuz it would happen more when it was hotter.

Ironheads, might be a bit finicky, but they will always get you home and no other bike or Harley sounds or feels like one! Inherently not much different from the evo's!
