I keep hearing Christians who accept Evolution saying that Genesis was never meant to be taken literally, and its only recent evangelicals that now do. Well if the earliest Christians didn't believe in the literal account of genesis, then what the fck did they believe. because until the 19th century there was no alternative. This is extremely ignorant of the history of their own religion, of course Genesis in the bible was designed to be and was believed by millions of people for thousands of years, what else was there.
"Well if the earliest Christians didn't believe in the literal account of genesis, then what the fck did they believe." Straightforward and a simple point but a good point nonetheless. Also my thinking is that if you add up the ages of Adam and Eve and the ages of all their descendents in the entire bible, you're left with a 6000-10000 year old Universe in which the book claims. This age fact isn't compatible with evolution. The creationists can do all the interpreting they want, but they're still left with interpreting that very simpleton like approach in which primitive peasants implemented, in a desperate attempt to discern the origins of the universe and how everything formed and functions. If you believe in evolution and the bible, then you basically believe that life and the universe is approximately 3.5 billion years old. That's as far as you can go with interpreting the bible and evolution and still make a blimp of sense although hundreds of problems arise from that belief such as, "So you interpret man made from dust as bacteria forming in water? Also explain this woman created from man's rib part". The bible tacitly says the universe is around 10000 years old. A creationist interprets the book of genesis as a giant metaphor to evolution. Evolution, helped made accurate by the contributions of the radiometric dating method, was also the exact same scientific method used to guess the age of the earth. So shouldn't creationist start believing in a 4.5 billion year old earth instead of 3.5? The earth is 4.5 billion years old, a difference of about one billion years. In the bible it says God created humans soon after (or kickstarting the evolutionary process) the earths creation. Evolution and the story of genesis are still both mutally exclusive when someone interprets the bible as describing or just mentioning evolution because the fact about 'age' is an inseparable part of the theory of evolution and the bible is precisely tacitly claiming that the earth is really not that old.
Peter Atkins is among the Top 100 Most brilliant men on the planet. Atkins has authored over 60 science books and illustrated most of them himself. He cut through all those goofy religious explanations like a laser.
Iv'e got no problem with seeing the two belief systems as different and looking at it from a different perspective but when it comes to facts about reality the bible has nothing to tell us but falsehoods where as science and evolution tell us huge amounts about how life is how it is today.
'Genesis is history'. That establishes in the first few seconds the level of sophistication that the Darwin doubters will unashamedly flaunt throughout the debate.
She is Right. The bible and Evolution can coexist in this world but not in the same discipline. Evolution belongs in the science branch and the bible in the same branch as Harry Potter, the Lord of the Rings and other fairy tales.
The title of this is so ridiculous it doesn't deserve debate. Of course folks should be able to believe what they like, but questioning the fundamental fact of evolution is daft.
Religions also evolve and they too survive if they can adapt. As time goes on, some religions die out and are replaced. There are many different species of religious beliefs. They are competing with each other for donations.
6:55 *"Instead of having a really serious conversation between people of faith and people of no faith, it's now become a very bad argument indeed."* This has been attempted time and time again and, invariably, it is the people of faith who prove unwilling to modify their viewpoints. To know where the bad arguments are coming from, you don't have to look any further than the mirror. For instance: 6:22 *"Evolution is talking about moving toward a destination; it means that there is intelligence through the process"* This isn't at all accurate. Evolution has no desired outcome other than better fit within the environment. The changes aren't made with any global perspective in mind, it is purely what is best in that particular moment. If any of the changes humankind has undergone didn't provide a sufficient advantage, we wouldn't be here and evolution would be perfectly fine with that. If you are serious about having a "really serious conversation", perhaps it is time to educate yourself on the subject matter. 13:30 Ugh. Please stop the nonsense of "how" questions and "why" questions. Just because a question can be formed grammatically doesn't mean it is legitimate. "Why did the universe begin" is either indistinguishable from "how" or it's a cheap attempt to steer the question in the direction of your desired answer. If you want to broach that subject in a more honest fashion, it should done like so: _"Is there a purpose behind the creation of the universe? If so, what is it and how can we tell?"_ I've yet to find a grand "why" question that couldn't be made more objective with this kind of reformatting.
Couldnt agree more. That "how, why" is clearly a bulshit argument and others in the debate should point that out. By that standards any explanation would be sufficient as we could then go to science and reform our first explanation and say it is an allegory.
Peter Marinko Thanks. Reading again I should have added an addendum. Even if I grant the why/how argument in its entirety, it still fails because religion provides no meaningful way of answering why questions either. It really is a silly argument to make.
you are making an idol of education when you could worship the true Jesus Christ who did in fact create life and even if this is not your belief, guess what, it is still true.

I need two theories: My body needs a theory of human biological evolution and i think darwins theory is the best answer for the moment. But then i need a theory for my existence because my beeing here cannot be explained through natural evolution. If bible creationists want to make me believe in their story in order to replace darwin, they still dont give me a theory for my beeing here. Thanks.
For Gods glory , he is a God of creation , creativity , beauty order , evolution is the complete opposite , it is an insane mindless incoherent concept .
Human beings are imperfect. Science and goddites agree to that much. Now how intelligent would it be, for an omniscient being, for it to design imperfect beings?
first debater is so called kenhamit.were you there to witness earth created?ironic how that question only applies to other views, not theirs.were you guys there to see jesus crucified?etc...
Believers all seem to want to say their beliefs CAN coexist alongside science. They've already conceded, by their desire to participate, that science is worthwhile. Even if they don't always fully grasp how science works. Seems to me the only way they can coexist is if believers make HUGE concessions. And science will be forced to make absolutely none. This longing to be accepted will only continue to erode the powers they attribute to their faith.
Yes, but the differrence is that at least scientist are working to find the truth and not being told what the truth is, specially by a water down literature created by a bunch of narcissist, that were not able to be original enough to create a unique religion that had to borrow from other ancient beliefs and myths.
Must I add the silliness of religion keeps being argued with fever. Are we fools, yes we are...the day will come when your belief will have no answer...we end as humans...the desire to live on even after death is absurd...the day will come and religions mean nothing
If you are theist or atheist it makes no difference both are same .... because atheist believe there is no god and theist believe there is god .....but both are believe ( assume) the thing that they don't know.....they are not straight enough to say " i do not know".....

"evidence is something that's interpreted" most stupid thing said in this debate. evidence is for everyone not a matter of opinion. if there were evidence that a butler killed his master its not interpreted.
Did you see the Bible written? How do you know it is true? How do you know God wrote it? You people keep believing that Zeus is up their tossing down lightning bolts, or Poseidon is controlling the tides.
Radiometric dating measures the fossil's Carbon weight and by that one can calculate its actual age. But there's a catch, radiometric dating can't calculate the actual age of a fossil more than 75000 years old(to compensate scientists use indirect methods to get as close to an actual date of that fossil)
Either him or other people like aron ra would be so out of the rest of their league, I'd love to see it though but when it come to Dilahunty I doubt they'd pay him enough to do it as it's on a BBC budget and they'll have to get him over to the UK.
The first guy Paul Taylor, what an absolute fool ! The exact same logic he uses to dismiss evolution can be used against his argument, was he around when the Bible was written to ascertain that the world is 6000 years old ?!
Stars that are millions of light years away are seen on Earth, if the Earth is 6000 years old, the light from the stars would not be here, now would it.
If the young earth creationists aren't lazy, then where are all the experiments and peer-reviewed journals that they could be publishing to prove their case?
There were two arguments for the existence of a deity of some kind that I didnt see advanced here unfortunately. The first is the statistical one. No sensible person would deny the idea of mutation and natural selection of some kind. But, if one looks at the sheer complexity of a single cell and all the processes that go in one or if one considers something like a simple flagellum attached to a microbiotic life form, it does raise a serious question: and that is whether there has been sufficient time elapsed since the formation of life for these fantastically complicated structures to have evolved in the classic way we understand. Various authors (Stephen Meyer- Signature in the Cell) have demonstrated that it would have taken more generations than there has been time enough for in the history of the Earth. That is a compelling line of argument. The other argument is the simple one of need. If nature 'prefers' the lowest state of energy then the obvious thing to do would be to have never had a universe to begin with. Yet, it exists. There was/is no demonstrable need or reason for anything to exist and yet it does. Why?
11:17 "I wish I knew what those words were" Exactly, thats why you're still going around with a hijab on your head and following a 7th century book I make my case
its a horrible thought that the universe was created by a god. This "omnipotent creator" decided that it would be best to give its creations the capacity to suffer, and allow its creations to torment each other. The notion that humans cannot treat other creatures and each other with kindness is disgusting. I don't need the Bible or the Quran to know right from wrong.
A simplified answer for believers asking "why atheism": -2 men are standing around, a woman walks by. -Man A claims: She has a horse in her purse! -Man B: She appears not to have a horse, as I know a horse, in her purse. How do you claim this? - A: I read a magazine that claims all women have a horse. - B: A full grown horse? in her purse? If all women have a horse, why do you think it is in the purse? While I agree, it is possible for the woman to own a horse, all the evidence in the world would lead me to disagree with the statement. - A: you cannot comprehend the miracle and depth of a woman's purse. It is bigger on the inside than out! - B: I have no purse, but that is in direct opposition to all observations. - A: The book says it!
I don't know what to say when Christians say "don't take the Bible literally". How else are you supposed to take it? If it's just metaphorical nonsense, then that leaves room for tons of extra denominations (on top of those we have to day). If it's just metaphorical nonsense (also, please prove it's not supposed to be taken literally), how could this possibly be a correct religion? How do you know what the metaphors actually mean? Why didn't God, if he wanted jackasses to believe and worship him, let the people create a book that didn't totally fail in getting its message across?
Precisely. How can they possibly know which bits are metaphorical and which are literal? It's clearly manipulated and unworthy of being taken seriously. Most of the stories about Jesus are copied from older religion anyway. Suspension of logic and the plea that faith is a virtue mean that religion does not get questioned in the same way that anything else would. That's because it is man-made and designed to control. Harmful, whichever way you look at it.
Yes talking snakes, virgin birth, and an infinite God (despite his never having a beginning because of being eternal) is obviously the more logical choice, opposed to silly facts, proof, testing and experimentation, fossil records, and living proof....those are just plain crazy 0_o
We rrrreeeeaaaallllllyyyyyy need to teach people how we know about half-life and how radiometric dating works. Because it's very silly to say scientists are assuming things when it comes to radiometric dating.
"Were you there?", has to be the most tragic thing ever said by an creationist. It's like if their wife cheated on them behind there backs, and the creationist get's supsicious, the wife could say "Were you there?" and then have to conclude that he wasn't so his wife did not cheat on him.
The world is filled with these types of believing people......everywhere.... at work, on the train.....at the night club, at the shops, in the book store........I see god people everywhere. It’s scary. And very frustrating having a conversation with them even outside of religious insanity.

Iv'e got no problem with seeing the two belief systems as different and looking at it from a different perspective but when it comes to facts about reality the bible has nothing to tell us but falsehoods where as science and evolution tell us huge amounts about how life is how it is today.
The muslim lady said shes not lazy to study science but said she never read about australopithecus, homo habilis, homo erectus and homo sapiens.
Atkins is awesome.
11:40 what a legend!
Religions also evolve and they too survive if they can adapt.
As time goes on, some religions die out and are replaced.
There are many different species of religious beliefs.
They are competing with each other for donations.
6:55 *"Instead of having a really serious conversation between people of faith and people of no faith, it's now become a very bad argument indeed."*
This has been attempted time and time again and, invariably, it is the people of faith who prove unwilling to modify their viewpoints. To know where the bad arguments are coming from, you don't have to look any further than the mirror. For instance:
6:22 *"Evolution is talking about moving toward a destination; it means that there is intelligence through the process"*
This isn't at all accurate.
If you want to broach that subject in a more honest fashion, it should done like so:
_"Is there a purpose behind the creation of the universe? If so, what is it and how can we tell?"_
I've yet to find a grand "why" question that couldn't be made more objective with this kind of reformatting.
Couldnt agree more. That "how, why" is clearly a bulshit argument and others in the debate should point that out.
By that standards any explanation would be sufficient as we could then go to science and reform our first explanation and say it is an allegory.
Peter Marinko
Thanks.

I need two theories:
My body needs a theory of human biological evolution and i think darwins theory is the best answer for the moment.
14:00 The pride on the kids face after asking the question. DAMN
first debater is so called kenhamit.were you there to witness earth created?ironic how that question only applies to other views, not theirs.were you guys there to see jesus crucified?etc...
Evolution is the genius way of god creating different kinds of animals from one.
Yes, but the differrence is that at least scientist are working to find the truth and not being told what the truth is, specially by a water down literature created by a bunch of narcissist, that were not able to be original enough to create a unique religion that had to borrow from other ancient beliefs and myths.
One does not ‘believe’ in evolution... you either understand it or you don’t
No, mosyt atheists don't believe there is no god, they don't believe there is one
the answer in a word is ''No''
Some people are stubbornly ignorant
Areeee....In India there are familys who have the history of farming the same land at least 12000 years...and these guys are talking about 6000 years ago there were nothing....😂😂
🤭🤭🤣🤣
"evidence is something that's interpreted" most stupid thing said in this debate. evidence is for everyone not a matter of opinion. if there were evidence that a butler killed his master its not interpreted.
Did you see the Bible written? How do you know it is true? How do you know God wrote it?
You people keep believing that Zeus is up their tossing down lightning bolts, or Poseidon is controlling the tides.
If theres something we share in common, we better share in better moral standards and humanly rational behaviors.
Professor Atkins to the former Archbishop "There speaks a frightened man" 😂😂😂😂😂
Peter Atkins is so great.
“I don’t see any contradiction at all, other than....”
That’s an interesting way of saying “yes, there is a contradiction”.
Radiometric dating measures the fossil's Carbon weight and by that one can calculate its actual age. But there's a catch, radiometric dating can't calculate the actual age of a fossil more than 75000 years old(to compensate scientists use indirect methods to get as close to an actual date of that fossil)
I'd love to see Matt Dillahunty on some of these debates.
Dillahunty is trash, he would spend his time defending his wife’s right to sleep around
The exact same logic he uses to dismiss evolution can be used against his argument, was he around when the Bible was written to ascertain that the world is 6000 years old ?!
that guy clearly doesn't know what evolution is .. he's arguing from ignorance.
Stars that are millions of light years away are seen on Earth, if the Earth is 6000 years old, the light from the stars would not be here, now would it.
Young earth creationists contend that god created the light already in transit so we could see them.
I love the subtle anti-animal agriculture message at the end there.
3:50 oh shit, it's the guy who killed Omar in the movie Scarface.
atkins is the man
+Who am I? yes he is. my favorite part was "while you just lay back and say, I'll think of England" that gave me a chuckle
pimpsoulja8888 lol, right on.
Why?
Please invite Sadhguru next time.
A question for Paul Taylor : Were you there when the creation happenend? No? How do you know it is true?
“Genesis is history...” WERE YOU THERE? You start, START with belief in the buy-bull, then you present the buy-bull as proof??
If you can reconcile the Bible and Darwin, then you're on to a winner.
You could become Pope.
He's managed to do it.
11:17 "I wish I knew what those words were" Exactly, thats why you're still going around with a hijab on your head and following a 7th century book
I make my case
Love this comment, brilliant.

THE OBVIOUS ANSWER IS ' NO THEY CANT '
The best but also only excuse that God has for all the suffering, death, injustice, and evil in this world is that "he" DOES NOT EXIST!!!
its a horrible thought that the universe was created by a god. This "omnipotent creator" decided that it would be best to give its creations the capacity to suffer, and allow its creations to torment each other. The notion that humans cannot treat other creatures and each other with kindness is disgusting. I don't need the Bible or the Quran to know right from wrong.
@@coalcat5417 indeed! Gods don't exist but if a god would exist it would be a celestial monster!
I see no contradiction between the Bible and the adventures of Popeye.
They are both just as true.
There are lots of fictional books that are at least as relevant as the bable.
A simplified answer for believers asking "why atheism":
-2 men are standing around, a woman walks by.
Take a bow Professor Atkins. "What is wrong with arrogance if you are right? th-cam.com/video/oY3iJdiFKIM/w-d-xo.html
That point of them being lazy was so on point
Superstition has a firm hold on our consciousness
Intellectually lazy is actually truth told by atkins
Yes talking snakes, virgin birth, and an infinite God (despite his never having a beginning because of being eternal) is obviously the more logical choice, opposed to silly facts, proof, testing and experimentation, fossil records, and living proof....those are just plain crazy 0_o
Gotta love the first guy talking. Bible presuppositionist saying "were you there?" as if it makes his viewpoint more valid! 😂
They don't understand , so they make their own truth regardless of how ridiculous it is .
11:35 Very very well said.
9:24 3 words says it all.
This is a rare gem.
The world is filled with these types of believing people......everywhere.... at work, on the train.....at the night club, at the shops, in the book store........I see god people everywhere.
It’s scary. And very frustrating having a conversation with them even outside of religious insanity.
Fuller is both right and wrong simultaneously.
