For those wondering how to see the stacks of Soul Blaze as I can - it's a mod! You can find it here: www.nexusmods.com/warhammer40kdarktide/mods/137 But if you aren't able to get mods, then a rule of thumb I use is that a fully charged up Purgatus usually deals around 9 - 10 stacks (assuming no crit). A quick charge and release deals around 3 stacks worth. So if I'm starting an engagement, I would do 2 quick charges (to build up Warp Flurry stacks as well), and then release a full charge to almost always guarantee a 15 stack application. Most things other than Crushers, Bulwarks, and Reapers are dead by then though... Hope this helps!
You can change settings in the mod to hide the wordy label and instead set colors to identify dot types. This makes it much cleaner while still remaining as useful.
I had a concern that your build narratives, while super cool, would start to get repetitive for you pretty quickly. I absolutely prefer the deeper insight on talent choices during the actual video, and the new narrative intro is going to let you be even more creative with the flavor. Love this new style!
Seconding this. I feel like with the old format, it was impossible to weave in why some talents were taken over others (in a narrative fashion). Leaving the talent tree explanation and narration to be separate is a good call- keep up the good work!
Yeah, I didn’t like the narrative before. It felt weird and awkward. Just wanted to know the actual talents. I prefer narrative in the beginning and actual build/stats in video!
That uncanny strike technique using force push to guarantee a weak spot hit is AMAZING. I knew it was a weak spot hit, but hadn't connected the two together. 100% using that.
I took the same direction in the build after the unlocked & loaded, and I gotta say that it is amazing! I tweaked it a bit to make the blocking ability stronger, and now I can tank daemonhosts no without any problems at all, ,as well as hold the machinegun barrage for quite some time for my team to make some space. The hidden synergies are absolutely awesome, and you made psyker my favorite class to play! Awesome work on this video!
Congrats my man ! You just solve the major weakness of my Purgatus build : Carapace and Elites. Now i can really be a lord of Cinder against the corrupted. Many thanks ! 😉
If you are only after carapace and elites the mkIV dueling sword with uncanny strike is faster, though the cool factor of the force sword is more than enough to pick it especially since you don't have dome.
Dude, I love your lore crafting. It's what 40k is about for many into the hobby, while your perfect builds allow us to live out our 40k power fantasies in Darktide!
Normally I don't interact / sub to any darktide content but this build guide is absolutely amazing. Showing the combat tips along with in depth reasoning is very useful.
I love it and learned a lot! I never thought to pair assail with the purgatoris, my fire build with brain burst had always felt like it was missing something. I will try this out
If I am being honest, I do like this format for making the guide over the prior format with giving lore reasons per talent. So I am a "thumbs up" on the change
Absolutely superb build. It has something for almost every situation. About the only weak point is monstrosities which I've sat back and helped whittle down, but there's plenty of people who spec for big damage and can deal with them efficiently already.
Yea! Psykers, not matter how to slice it, struggle in Monster/Boss DPS department. That being said, Soul Blaze + melee is probably the best DPS the class can get, so I guess this build is about as good as you can get!
@@rykenxiv Not to mention that this is probably the best possible setup to maintain aggro from a Plague Ogryn or Chaos Spawn, seeing as you can block for much longer and stack a ton of dmg resistance in the process too. Plus, in beetween tanking hits, stacking Soulblaze on the thing also ensures continuous dmg while you keep blocking it. It's really very elegant i must say
Really nice tech on the force push + uncanny, thanks. One thing to note on bulwarks is that if you force push them 3 times you can also get them to open up.
This video is...amazing. I learned a LOT and I am really enjoying this setup. Loved the little cinematic at the start, very creative and adds some nice flavor.
Firstly, thank you for pointing out the connection between forcesword pushes hitting weakspots and uncanny! Coming up on nearly 2k hours maining Purgatus it isn't often I learn new tech, so thank you so much. What follows are some suggestions that I hope you try out as you continue to explore the surprisingly high potential of the Purgatus. While your build is good, I think it is missing out a lot by missing Psykinetics Aura (via Brain Rupture) and 4 stack Warp Charges. As you point out over stacking soulblaze does great damage, and the easiest method is shriek, which means shrieking as frequently as possible is the path to the highest damage output. You also gain 16% dmg boost to your dots with 4 stacks, which will be up the majority of the time even while ulting frequently. You don't want the peril resistance from warp charges, so picking up Essence Harvest means you can drop Soulstealer, and pickup the dubious but not entirely useless Wildfire (which is mostly useful for ensuring stack ownership against other Psykers to make sure your dmg boosts and uncanny get applied to the dot ticks). Psykinetics Aura reducing the ult cd for your whole team is really strong, as so many other classes have very strong abilities. You lose Assail's power to counter entrenched gunner packs, but more frequent shrieks easily fills that gap. With Brain Rupture you only want Kinetic Resonance, which gives you another way to do decent boss damage without needing to commit to melee. You don't want Kinetic Flayer because using the staff primary to push pox bursters is optimal (especially vs conga lines), and you don't want a random proc to blow it up in your face. That all leaves enough points to still dip over to Kinetic Deflection for peril block. If you slide forward while using primary fire you don't need run and gun and can get the more highly regarded Warp Nexus. Sliding while running at gunners also helps avoiding being shot by them as you close the gap. Crits make a good difference to damage output, as dot damage grows exponential(ish)y, meaning applying double stacks results is a fairly decent damage boost. For this reason I also run the 5% crit perk with Flak dmg. With enough crit and a little luck you can fairly often hit max staff stacks from one fully charged secondary. Venting shriek needs 85 peril to apply 6 stacks, and so a method of quickly gaining peril to that mark before ulting is fairly important. Assail is great for that (especially if animation canceling), but with BB you lose that option. Instead you want to craft a Deimos with as low warp resistance as possible, so that with 2-4 weapon swapped special charges up you can go from 0 to 85 peril very quickly, though most often you'll just be doing one to hit that 85 peril mark. While I'm talking about Deimos, I think maniac and unyielding are optimal, as it gets you easy one shots vs muties and as you point out unyielding helps with boss dmg. Deflector is fine, but can be substituted by effective movement and positioning, so my preferred pick is Superiority, as the stacks last a long time, only drop off one at the time, and persist through weapon swaps. The greatest (and unique) advantage of shriek with Purgatus is that you don't start blowing yourself up for going over 100 peril until you finish channeling out the secondary. So as long as your ult is up, or will be soon, you can safely push over the 100 peril cap to squeeze out more damage in the most intense situations. Fairly often I will start a full charge up from 100 peril. The more frequently your ult is up, the more often you can do this, which connects back to my earlier argument for Psykinetics Aura and Warp Charges. I've dropped toughness regen on my curios and instead take Corruption resistance, Gunner resistance, and Ability CDR. Ability CDR is the only thing you can put on a curio to increase your offensive power, which is great. Corruption resist helps keep you away from dipping to one wound when teammates blow up pox bursters in your face (which no amount of skill on your part can avoid), and also helps a little with a few other enemies. I think the most important staff tech to learn is sprint sliding and dodge sliding while charging up the secondary, as it lets you safely push into fights to get the most out of the Purgatus' limited range while remaining very safe. If I were making a guide, I would point that out. Again thank you for the forcesword push tip. I hope you take my suggestions in the friendly sibling spirit I intend them, and not really as criticism, as I'm sure you know there are many viable builds. I've spent maybe more hours than anyone on Purgatus, and so I like to share my reflections and refinements with anyone else who has an interest to listen.
Probably my favorite video so far, at least regarding builds. While the other kind of intro is impressive on its own, it’s probably something that will get stale. This also give you insight on another level. Love it! More pls :)
Bro u are something special. Its really rare to find someone putting so much effort and work and making such a complex yet functioning build in a game. Great work man!! Just created my first Psyker and will definetly aim for your build
I really like the narrative / build crafting combo. It's been a while since I last used the Purgatus -- this is a cool build, I'll try it tonight. Your content is a default upvote, thanks Ryker!
I knew that intro seemed familiar! I like this style more for the builds. Your explanation for the perks/feats/blessings is really nice and informative
You may not have a sexy voice to match, but I find yours very calming and engaging. I love that you put some lore and world building in your build guides and it inspired me to do the same to my own creations. Keep up the good work and you're one of my favorite Darktide channels!
The Deimos Deflector blessing + Kinetic Deflection tech is the reason I come back for every video, Ryken consistently teaches me new things about this fun game. Edit: holy shit this guy PSYKERS. This build has so many niche ways to fight, the soulblaze against the crushers is insane.
Damn... this is exactly the same weapon loadout I use but I was using different weapon perks and tree loadout. I used brain burst for ranged but the assail seems way better. One thing I was NOT doing was using the deimos properly... That example you used vs the crushers was amazing and big learning moment on what I've been doing wrong! Hell yeah now my build is even better, thanks!
I've watched quite a few of your videos. This one made me subscribe. I really like your videos and the way you present the information. Very well done.
Really good tip about the weakspot hits with the force push. I haven't used force swords in a while because I've been enjoying the dueling sword Mk IV so much, but I think I'll have to break out the old Deimos and try this.
I decided to give this build a shot to change things up. On the second pull got a 379 white. That white then went on to get 2/4 perks/blessing I needed and since I didnt havee run n gun on standby withheld changing the last blessing. Eventuall decided to just add IV warp Nexas and accidently clicked earn blessing and the throw away perk before realizing what I was doing. Stared at my screen for a good five minutes then glanced at my plasteel. Saw I had 2.5k plasteel and cried on the inside then just went for it. First pull 376 staff 78% burn then got 2/4 perks/blessing I needed. (flak was at 20%). The Emperor protects.
The Purgatus is better than it used to be like you say. It is more effective against elite melees, I can CC and kill ragers with it much quicker than a Trauma staff. I run it with Brain Burst as going down the Psionics tree like you did allows you to headpop very fast without having to worry about losing warp charges. It's my loadout of choice to solo Heresy/Damnation. I have different choices of blessings on my Purgatus, but to everyone their own :) The way I deal with bosses is by maxing soulblaze stacks with the Purgatus (16), then use Venting Shriek (which brings it to 20ish stacks). Venting Shriek after Purgatus means you can go above 16 stacks. If you use the Purgatus last you are stuck at 16 stacks. Then I BB, which is much less dangerous than going in in melee, and lets me stay back and look at the battlefield more easily and see if there are any other threats that appear that are higher priority than the boss. Also a Kinetic Flayer that pops at the beginning of a horde, means a kill on the horde which then gets suppressed and doesn't move. And since patch 13 it seems to be better at prioritizing elites when they are mixed in. I really like Deflector on my sword, like you. I value the "I am fending off for myself" more than just a tiny bit more damage.
Great video! One suggestion is to use a higher quality preset when you record the intro part, it might look a bit more professional then. Keep up the great work! 😁
Video-wise? The narrative specs were neat, but this style is more easily understood, because the explanation is kept with the layout. Also, I've never been much of a Deimos fan, but then, despite all my /played time, I never got into the useage details like you have. I'm going to have to practice these specific tactics with it (and other force swords). I definitely learned something about armor and also the Deimos here.
purgatus can literally control a horde better than smite, it's absolutely insane. The left-click has enough stagger to essentially disable 90% of the enemies in the game.
The staff doesn't work in auric missions because it's useless against carapace armor and you are forced to take assail which is the worst blitz to make it work (since you don't regain charges fast enough to deal with endless hordes), however it is a fun weapon and works well on malice and heresy
I was looking for a differnet build for my Psyker and after i built your talent tree i swaped between mine and yours... we had 2 talent points in a different spot lol. I know this build will work. time to test it anyways
Personally, when I use Purgation staff, I like to go pretty much straight down the left tree. I pick up the talent below Quietus that adds Soulblaze to nearby enemies when you kill an Elite (don't remember the name rn), Wildfire to spread more Soulblaze when things die, Creeping Flames on Venting Shriek, and Reborn in Flames under Warp Charges so any enemy dying to Soulblaze has a 10% chance to grant a charge. My only real reasoning is that this is the only time these talents are ever worth using, is with Purg staff, because if your sole method of applying Soulblaze is through those talents, it's just a waste of points. Purg is the only way to make them worthwhile, and they do pretty alright combined with it. As for the lack of Assail to deal with ranged... Meet Brain Rupture. Especially with the upgrade that makes it charge faster and generate less peril after using your ability - because with Warp Charges (and especially Reborn in Flames on it) you can use it pretty much whenever if you need to pop the heads of a few gunners or whatnot at range quickly, with more damage than Assail. But really the main idea is that I go all-in on the fire schtick when I take the fire stick, even if it's less optimal than some other builds.
As much as I do love the talent selection narrative, this way was much more helpful. Also I feel like you will end up re treading the same ground with the narrative talents after a while. Though to be fair you could do what ever, Im just hear for your wise words however they are delivered :)
What luck i just got done leveling my zealot and veteran so now im on psycker. And when i played on game-pass i loved the purgatus staff. Ill make sure to use this build once im level 30.
Quick charging is mainly to build up Warp Flurry stacks since you get a stack no matter how much or how little you charge! So if you are preparing to fight a horde, get a couple of quick charges off and for the rest of the engagement you'll be able to get a full channel much faster compared to only using full charges!
This is probably just my preference but I find the Mk 4 Duelling sword to be more useful in allrounder builds for the psyker. The high damage from the charged attack, combined with the moveset allows for solid weakspot hits, especially if you strip them of armor. I'd personally probably pick the bubble over Shriek (and thus the stagger) mostly for the team support aspect and to have some more breathing room when dealing with shooters. But aside from my personal feelings, this is a great build with a lot of explanations on the necessary mechanics.
Thoroughly enjoyed that! There is no other Darktide TH-camr quite like you, your builds always offer a unique perspective and creative approach that i greatly appreciate! The interplay of Uncanny Strike + Force Push + Soul Blaze is so smart and resourceful, i cant wait to give this a try. I was wondering though, is there a reason you cant stil opt for the Bubble Shield with this? I know you like to use the Venting Shriek as another way to safely dispose of Shooters but with the Bubble Shield i feel like Shooters are also way less of a problem in general. I personally have been using Purgatus in combination with the pretty standard Bubble Shield + Brain Burst + Empowered Psyonics setup. It feels pretty powerful, although it can be a touch awkward sometimes.
Without Creeping Flames as another way to apply Soul Blaze, you might be missing out on a lot of damage against Crushers, which reopens a gap in the weakness in Purgatus staff-based builds! While Assail can deal with shooters nicely without having to depend on Venting Shriek, taking Shriek also gives you a saving tool to help allies from afar - since the stagger goes through walls, you can help pounced teammates that are out of direct line of sight (just did this in a couple of games ago!) So while Bubble Shield is great for general defence, you have more utility and flexibility with Venting Shriek!
Really enjoyable content and fun to watch, keep up o7 (I'm personally not a fan of narated fiction for video game content, the rest of the video more than makes up for that)
Got a better staff with flurry and better burn stat and that's a huge improvement. Being able to get the alt fire off when you're under pressure, unsurprisingly, helps a lot.
This is really cool, but I'd consider making room for the weakspot kills to ranged cause crit, which your assail and melee will constantly be giving you
I thought about it too, but I think the guaranteed crit you get doesn't really benefit your loadout very much.. A guaranteed crit on 1 tick of the Purgatus is an extra stack of Soulblaze which is.. alright I guess. Assail getting a guaranteed crit is nicely for taking down specials, but I don't think I have the space to invest 2 more points to get there..
Thanks for the reply. I believe it would be ok to not go into Solidarity and Puppet master for the points. Also if you add Psychic Leeching you will get insane synergy when spamming Assail into those massed shotgunners/gunners. I guess the focus of these changes favors assail over the Purgatus. Thanks for the video though - I've been sleeping on the Deimos but after knocking crushers down from the heavy 2 I think it will get a lot more playtime from me
For those wondering how to see the stacks of Soul Blaze as I can - it's a mod! You can find it here: www.nexusmods.com/warhammer40kdarktide/mods/137
But if you aren't able to get mods, then a rule of thumb I use is that a fully charged up Purgatus usually deals around 9 - 10 stacks (assuming no crit).
Did you do any testing on the Blazing Spirit blessing for the Deimos Blaze Force Sword?
Also, did you test Wildfire?
You can change settings in the mod to hide the wordy label and instead set colors to identify dot types. This makes it much cleaner while still remaining as useful.
Great tip and great video. You're a big help, my friend. It is much appreciated!

This video is...amazing. I learned a LOT and I am really enjoying this setup. Loved the little cinematic at the start, very creative and adds some nice flavor.
Loved the narrative intro, makes the varlet build more interesting

Damn... this is exactly the same weapon loadout I use but I was using different weapon perks and tree loadout. I used brain burst for ranged but the assail seems way better. One thing I was NOT doing was using the deimos properly... That example you used vs the crushers was amazing and big learning moment on what I've been doing wrong! Hell yeah now my build is even better, thanks!
love the intro :D and in depth explanation
I never knew uncanny strike and force push synchronizes! This is now something I can use even on surge staff!
I've watched quite a few of your videos. This one made me subscribe. I really like your videos and the way you present the information. Very well done.
Glad you like them!
Actually i learned more about force swords and assail =) TY
Well just tried it out on a sub par Purgatus. Its very effective build!
I have different choices of blessings on my Purgatus, but to everyone their own :)
The way I deal with bosses is by maxing soulblaze stacks with the Purgatus (16), then use Venting Shriek (which brings it to 20ish stacks).
Fantastic video and build. Thanks again!
My pleasure!
You videos are awesome and I love your narratives.
Psyker is my last class to lvl to 30 so this looks like a fun build to try out 👍
Yaaaaaay I can enjoy my pysker again!
Honestly? Really cool intro, dude!
Glad you like it!
Awesome build! Just in time for my Psyker contracts this week 😂
Helpful video.
I dont know what people find in purgatus but if people like playing it, this is simply good content.
purgatus can literally control a horde better than smite, it's absolutely insane.
@@grubi450Well, Ryken literally says in the video that the build works for him in auric maelstrom, so might be worth giving it a try
@@grubi450 Uh, you watch the video mate? The build has a way to make the purgatus work against carapace through some clever weapon switching tactics
Horde control is amazing but how about horde deletion with voidstrike @@Skilow
I was looking for a differnet build for my Psyker and after i built your talent tree i swaped between mine and yours... we had 2 talent points in a different spot lol. I know this build will work. time to test it anyways
I love run and gun on my flame staff. You can get the lucky crits that increase your move speed to so you charge hella fast at enemies
Another Psyker of culture!
i think brain burst is better with purgatus
Intro was great!!
Great video! Thanks.
Glad you liked it!
What mod are you using that shows the debuffs on enemies like soul blaze and brittleness?
Debuff Indicator mod! I've shared the link in my pinned comment - along with some advice if you can't use mods!
As much as I do love the talent selection narrative, this way was much more helpful. Also I feel like you will end up re treading the same ground with the narrative talents after a while.
Though to be fair you could do what ever, Im just hear for your wise words however they are delivered :)
Been waitin for your uploads hell yea
I love the new intro!
Glad you do!
So much tech! Thanks
Run n gun purgatus is soooo underrated.
Damn right!
Good stuff man
What luck i just got done leveling my zealot and veteran so now im on psycker. And when i played on game-pass i loved the purgatus staff. Ill make sure to use this build once im level 30.
love your builds
With bulwarks if you burn the ground they run over they will begin to build soulblaze stacks and you can get around the shield that way
Great video. Just wondering about not fully charging staff attacks? More dps with cast at half charge? Thx
Instalike for the intro alone
While Assail can deal with shooters nicely without having to depend on Venting Shriek, taking Shriek also gives you a saving tool to help allies from afar - since the stagger goes through walls, you can help pounced teammates that are out of direct line of sight (just did this in a couple of games ago!)
So while Bubble Shield is great for general defence, you have more utility and flexibility with Venting Shriek!
Now if i could only find a way to get Warp Flurry blessing. Blessing farming is the hardest grind in the game
I really hope for an overhaul to crafting... Good luck on your hunt! May the Omnissiah grant you fortune!
Thanks
Thank you!! Appreciate the gift!
Pretty much how mine is set up but I personally run BB for my ranged, I can see how Assail can work a bit better though.
GZ nice intro!
I'm glad you like it!
Really enjoyable content and fun to watch, keep up o7 (I'm personally not a fan of narated fiction for video game content, the rest of the video more than makes up for that)
time for this to be remade after the most resent update heh or at least the trait tree
Would appreciate if you'd use the healthbar mod for these vids. Just to see how much damage the builds do in practice.
Tried this out today, my purgatus is not good but im out of plasteel and it's great.
Got a better staff with flurry and better burn stat and that's a huge improvement. Being able to get the alt fire off when you're under pressure, unsurprisingly, helps a lot.
Oh I been gone a minute… which setting allows me to see the soul blaze stacks on enemies 👀?
The mod that shows how many stacks of soulblaze you have on enemies as a text over their heads, is it "Debuff Indicator"?
Yes! I have also pinned it in my comment at the top!
It also works wonders with brain burst I managed to almost solo rinda Karnak with it
This is really cool, but I'd consider making room for the weakspot kills to ranged cause crit, which your assail and melee will constantly be giving you
I thought about it too, but I think the guaranteed crit you get doesn't really benefit your loadout very much..
Thanks for the video though - I've been sleeping on the Deimos but after knocking crushers down from the heavy 2 I think it will get a lot more playtime from me
nice poorhammer music, I immediately recognized it xD
