  • April 14 was an eventful day, even aside from the late night collision. From Christian Services to dinner parties, Sunday was the biggest day of the voyage.

    ... so much detail.
as a kid, before this ship was found, I read every book I could find about the titanic (sometimes twice) ... and I never learned half as much detail as this guy uncovered.

If I recall correctly, part of the reason Phillips got annoyed with Californian's wireless operator was the fact that the short distance between the two ships meant that the transmission from Californian was quite loud in Phillips' headset.

I cannot thank you enough for your channel. Over the past couple of years the information you painstaking research and share turns on another light that illuminates this 107 year old disaster a little more. As such, those involved become more human, not just a name in history books and movies. If forces one to ask “what would I have done that night? How would I have reacted? With stoic bravery, stunned silence, uncontrolled panic...? I think of parents trying to comfort their children knowing they are not going to survive the night despite wearing a life vest. I think of the survivors in the lifeboats listening to the screams of the dying in the water knowing their loved one was among those suffering a slow, painful, horrific death. And then the silence that followed. Every single person on the Titanic had a story. This channel brings all that and so much more into focus. Thank you for your unprecedented research.

I really feel for Phillips. He worked extra hard for such a long period of time, and then he has to work even longer and more frantically to send distress signals. And in the end he ends up dying as well.
If I recall correctly, an ice warning that was recieved but not delivered was because there is a particular header a message is supposed to have when its a priority message from another ship to be delivered to the bridge or captain and this warning did not include that foreword, (and that could have been the Californian's message but I dont remember).

It was _Mesaba's,_ at 9:38 PM.
_Californian's_ message from 10:55 PM (less than an hour before the collision and less than twenty miles away) wasn't even copied down. Phillips just told Evans to fuck off and go to bed, and that's exactly what Evans did.

The weather was Diamond Dust that night according to one documentary I saw. That would have made visibility very low, even though it looks clear. Diamond Dust is a real problem today, but wasn't a known phenomenon in 1912. Its basically when the air is filled with tiny frozen water droplets. So small, their near microscopic. This would explain why Titanic couldn't see the ice berg until it was too late.

One thing about Phillips brushing off the final warning from "Californian" that is rarely mentioned is HOW Evans attempted it.It was considered a standard practice if you were attempting to contact another vessel that was in communication with someone else, to tap out a request to 'break-in' to their communication. It was the Marconi equivalent of putting up your hand before talking.
Cyril Evans didn't do this. He just barged right in with the ice message. That was likely what upset Phillips: that Evans was violating operator's protocols so thoughtlessly. Evans later admitted he had erred in not asking to cut in first. That was why he took no real offence from Phillips' response: he knew that he himself had screwed up in a really basic way and likely had earned the rebuke.

In a minor defense of the Californian, one note made their message unique - everyone else had reported the ice, but for the first time, a ship was stopped by it. Now, agreed, Phillips was overworked, exhausted and had just almost had his eardrums blown out by Californian’s spark, she was so close. So the irritability is understood. And let’s be fair, if nothing else had happened that night, it could be just written off as yet another ice warning.
Except it was the last. And it was different.

The last day she ever saw daylight. If one thinks about it had they done the Lifeboat drill the iceberg that was floating in Titanic's path might have floated away harmlessly by the time Titanic reached the spot. Because I don't know how many hours it would have taken for the lifeboats to lower and then be raised up again but surely it would be enough to prevent disaster.

I wondered that. They certainly had the technology (even if incandescent bulbs weren't yet sufficiently bright, lighthouses had been using kerosene lamps, parabolic reflectors and Fresnel lenses for years). Seems surprising that such a high-tech ship was still reliant on a lookout with a pair of field glasses.

Hmmm, what about the theory that Murdock saw the iceberg before Fleet...
There is one thing that contradicts that theory. And this is the testimony of the quartermaster Robert Hichens.
He claimed that his watch was "uneventful" before 20 minutes before midnight, when the bell was heard from the crow's nest. I know his reputation is not good, since he was the guy who had a fight with Molly Brown in boat 6. But anyway he was the only survivor of those who were on the bridge during the collision. Too bad Murdock and Moody died, and they were not able to testify.
IMHO, somebody between Fleet and Murdock made a mistake.
I mean, captain Smith ordered to the watch officer Lightoller to be notified if the conditions change. At least half an hour before the collision the conditions DID CHANGE, a haze was noticed on the horizon. But captain Smith WAS NOT notified about this, so...

Rayno Raynov they keep ignoring Hitchens testimony and I cannot understand why. Their hypothesis is interesting but it could be much more valid if they say why they are ignoring that conflicting testimony...

Watching this on the 14th from Australia, here the collision would of happened 107 years ago exactly in seven minutes

It’s already 5:15pm here in the UK so I’ll probably have to catch up on your new Real Time sinking tomorrow. As for tonight, I’m gonna stick with my original plan of having both your original sinking video and the 1997 Titanic movie on at the same time.

Today I jumped into the Atlantic on the cost of PAB Newfoundland in memory of the sinking. It feels so cold and I found it hard to get back to shore.

It’s now 2:20 am in the UK. Exactly 107 years ago the Titanic plunged under the surface of the ocean. Over 1500 people are left to drown in the freezing water. What’s even more creepy is it’s the exact same day (Monday) that she sank aswell.

In your local time it sank, but accurately just 5 mins ago on the ship's time it struck the berg
