That's awesome! I am familiar with isoniazid as a serendipitous (as all the pathbreaking discoveries were until recently) discovery in psychopharmacology. IIRC, it was abandoned in favor of iproniazid, which was, in turn, abandoned in favor of isocarboxazid. Unfortunately, I only ever took one chemistry course in high school, so I don't understand much about the physicochemical aspects of all of this. Have you ever read a detailed account of the discovery of its antidepressant efficacy? It's an interesting story. I was wondering if you could briefly explain what it is about these drugs antibiotic effect especially effective for Tuberculosis, as I have never understood it. Hydrazine drugs are interesting to me because they have so many different effects. You can use phenelzine for many different conditions; it is also an inhibitor of SSAO, and its major metabolite, phenethylhydrazine, is a potent inhibitor of GABA-T and could be used as a GABAnergic drug in its own right. It probably should be, actually, as it is so much less toxic than vigabatrin. But I digress. Cheers!

@@ashiammi33351 Hi, i'm assuming you mean how this gets tested in the lab? They basically take a swab and try to grow it in a culture where multiple drugs at certain concentrations are added. There are defined thresholds set by WHO. If the sample manages to grow, it means it is multidrug resistant. They are also working on using genetic screening to predict the resistance level of a certain strain, but the culture method remains the golden standard for now.

This video is quite accurate, good job on it. I would add, because I think its important to why TB remains such a problem even to this day, that the current drug regimin the antibiotic course is 6-9 months long AND the drugs make you nauseous. This can obviously cause major issues with compliance. It is difficult enough to get someone in a developed nation to take just a full course of 7 days of antibiotics....imagine trying to get people in poor areas or underdeveloped areas of the world to commit to 9 months of a 2-4 drug cocktail (4 drugs for 2 months, then 2 of those for 4-7 additional months) that makes them feel terrible and lethargic.
I'm diagnosed with mdr tb 😔 it's already been a year I'm taking those medicine evn my complexion has become dark and now everyone is asking me why I'm looking so dark.. I don't feel like going anywhere and feeling very depressed😭
I had MDR-TB, few years back, around May 2020. At first i thought i was getting Covid but the doctor said it was TB. Spent a lot of money and 2 years of treatment but i pull through. Got it from my uncle, god rest his soul.
I had this as a child & tested positive on my first th skin test that we all take before school . No one knew I had even come in contact with it. I have latent tb variety.
Im 14 and found a ventilator in my room. I asked my parents about it and asked why i had it and why i used it as a 3 year old. Apparently I had TB and decided to do some research on it and im pretty surprised.
Hi can anyone help me please, I have lymph node and after 1 year 1st line drug it didn't go, no other symptoms at all, no problem, doctor saying might be mdr tb I am about to get married please tell if I can make physical contact with my partner or not ? Pls reply my question all the std test reports are negative
Mdr tb might transmit to people around you while talking, coughing, laughing etc. I hope you'd take great care. Wear a mask around people and stay in a well ventilated room. Also, have a healthy diet. It would help you to recover soon and will help your body to response to the medicine. I hope you get well soon. Take care.
Yes it can completely cured if you take the medication correctly as your doctor ordered you. It takes 18 months or 12 months to be completed to be cured based on which country you are. I used to work in MDR TB hospital as a Pharmacy manager.
How can it be spread by singing but not kissing? Frankly, I find that pretty unbelieveable. I'll buy the singing part but not that something spread by singing isn't also spread by kissing.
My wife has been suffering from a long time in her lower abdominal TB. After cesarean section operation my wife get affected with TB. Abdominal wall get affected beside the ovary , reproductive system get affected. Fast time by DNC used collection came out . Finally her overy and reproductive system have been operation because of long injury . TV drags continued more than 8 months . Now after operation some collection remains in lower abdominal area collection is going through the vagina. I don't know what will happen in her life at last. Please help me in this regard. I am from Bangladesh. Here most of the doctors are not good at treatment. I have spent much money but no result I get.
I don't understand how can you get infected by breathing next to an ill person but not by kissing, do you mean that it's not transmited through saliva?
Dave, I'm sorry. recently saw your haircut and couldn't help but notice that you were brutally dumped by your wife, Karen. You don't suck, you'll get through this dave. Love you
I'm studying biochemistry and actually did my bachelor thesis about isoniazid resistance in tuberculosis. It might actually get published soon! :D

Great video as always, one correction though, sputum and saliva are not the same thing, sputum is the mucus that develops in the lungs.

@ Professor Dave I would have wished for a bit more in depth explanation of the causes for the symptoms - like the infamous caverns in the lungs.

i was susected to have a mycobacterium, but my sputum test are all negative of tb.
Thanks Dave for the awesome work, are there any outcoming videos on current and passed Cancer meds?
maybe at some point in the pharmacology series!
So dying of consumption does not mean eating or drinking yourself to death?
I was *eating water* when watching this video
I then started *drinking water*

if Tb spreads by talking why it can't spread by shaking, kissing?

I don't understand how can you get infected by breathing next to an ill person but not by kissing, do you mean that it's not transmited through saliva?
@@kingt.hawkings32 But then why don't kissing transmit it too. Saliva is exchanged, is it that you can only absorb it through the breathing?
@@kingt.hawkings32 Thank you.
Because you have to INHALE the droplets into your lungs - which you usually don´t do during kissing.
@@kingt.hawkings32 No, the people in the latent stage cannot spread the disease at all, as their immune system suppresses the bacteria.
