I was making coffee just yesterday thinking “I do hope there’s a new Mylar drop a coming” and this hit the spot. Smack bang wallop. Oof! It’s a bloody belter. Some of your finest patches to date I reckon. The woof section alone. Proper !!!
this will be the video that people make the decision to buy this based on. wow, you really did it justice. i learned about this thing less than a min ago, jumped to footwerk patch and yup, that's a winner.
Ha, I did feel the need to make a reference to it in the vid - defo similar spirit/universe that they occupy although of course different implementation and tone
mmmm! I was very pleasantly surprised to see just how surprisingly small the overlap between the two is, and that they both still have their own places, still. Ace video as always btw! I'm less active these days but it's nice to see you're still killing it 😎
That was filth! Loved it. I used to have Akemie’s Castle, another 4 osc fm synth, it had some sweet spots but a lot searching for them, plus that Yamaha chip wasn’t really my thing…. THIS is my thing! Seems like the stepped osc eliminate a lot of the searching for sweet spots.
Very cool! It sounds not disimilar to the wonderful Twisted Electrons MegaFM to my ears and the only reason I never bought one of those is that they are as non-modular, non-patchy, and as isolated as a synth can get. Props for the embedded irony, served up dry btw.
Awesome demo! Does this module offer anything that the Vector Wave doesn't? You've given me tonnes of ideas for my Vector Wave, but is this worth buying in addition? Is it just like breaking out one of the voices? and giving it a bit more hands-on control?
Oh, I’m so glad the shift button lets you fine tune the oscillators rather than being limited to neat multiples/fractions for the harmonic relationships. Coarse and fine tune is THE method for linear FM, IMO.
Oh my days! Alex, what are you doing to us? Unless I'm very much mistaken - I can make Drum & Bass with my modular as well!!!! Plus an RYK ALGO...? Finest quality Mylar.
Any chance of a little more detail of whats going on during the hellscape acid bit at the end , just got an algo after seeing this and wanted to try to recreate that filth 😊
ooof really nice video, great explanation of FM and superb gnarly sounds in the demo patches! Might just have to pick one of these up now. Was initially put off by the 'hold button and plug/turn' but it seems really useable!
Great video mylar! I recently got into wavetable osc and got one at awasome price, but this makes me maybe switch that for some FMy thing like this hah. Btw, cant seem to wonder on all of your newer vids, can we expect soon that Buchla system demos? 😬
Great sounding module! I'm not 100% sold on the interface though - seems a little too "hold this while pressing this/plugging this" for my tastes. I feel like I'd forget half the functions. A few extra buttons with mode LEDs might have been a better option?
I know what you mean but it’s pretty simple in use - it’s an either/or situation regarding which button to press to get the alternative function once you do it a few times, vs other modules where you have like eight buttons and various combos within them. There’s only two!
@@mylarmelodies Well, it's only two buttons, with their own functions, but also doubling as two different shift buttons for combinations with multiple other knobs or sockets. Labelling for those isn't great either. Only 10 mins after watching the whole video and I've already forgotten what 90% of the shift combo functions were, so respectfully, I'll stand by my criticism. Great demo though Mylar! Love your work.
@boydw1 For sure, it’s not going to stick after watching something once - but I find once you’ve been physically using something yourself for a few days, you learn.
@@mylarmelodies yeah, but there's a difference between What you (or I at least) can remember while actively using something, and what I can remember coming back to it after a couple of weeks break. Even just properly labelling the shift function with different colour texts could go a long way to improving this. I don't make criticisms just to bag manufacturers - I genuinely hope companies like RYK take note, and make better, more obvious interfaces, for everyone's benefit.

Oh hell. I really love my Akemie's Castle and I'm not sure I want to give it up for anything... but there is a LOT to love here. I'm enough of an FM addict to have both. But I've got like 4 flagship oscillators and a handful of great smaller ones, how many VCOs can one mortal even use?
Great module and great jam ! Last one is crazy ! Love that Is it possible to tune the module and the steps of harmonic intervals with somthing different than 440 Hz ? Maybe 432 or even 430 ? I don't see that in the manual. Thank you.
Best thing about your videos is how damn musical they are...Especially loved the Aphex Bass patch. Lovely. Bravo! Module sounds ace. But just like many Mutable modules I just cannot remember any Hold this and turn that stuff. How would you compare this to something like a Mindphaser in terms of usability ? I know different... But similar sonic landscapes?? Anyway. A really wonderful video. ❤
Never used a Mindphaser but I can say that the deeper functions aren’t hard to remember once you learn them, as there are only two buttons so if it’s not one, it’s the other.
Thanks Chris and haha yes indeed, that snare made my tummy tingle - it's actually the OG Tiptop SD808 module into the low input of a Music Thing Minidrive! Weirdly I fed the 6m0d6 into the High input at the same time to sort of smash it all together. I was so stoked with that snare sound I actually sampled it and put on my Patreon FWIW - link in description. Paid members can grab it - but the recipie is SD808 > MiniDrive.
The screaming Aphex Bass part made me poop my pants.. wow this makes FM synthesis a lot easier. Must have a few thru zero oscillators behind the panel no?
A fine piece of gear with impressive sound and spotting the pricing on the website, really competetively priced as well! - But to be quite honest: Although a little detail to some, I really don't love stereo-jacks as outputs. Give me that sweet double-jacks and save me the money for another special cable.
@@mylarmelodies Of course it‘s not the worst, but I find it comfortable to sit in front of a system that just asks for the correct length of a cable for a certain connection and nothing else. @@mylarmelodies I might, yes. In the end of the day, hardware is something you get for the enjoyment of the process („I could do it on a computer […]“). I must have off sick on the day the school was teaching FM synthesis. Thanks for the lesson.
