  • There are all sorts of expensive home security systems with sensors, alarms, base units, and all sorts of complications. But what if you just want a single door sensor, perhaps for the front door of your apartment or storage unit? Tech expert Dave Taylor of www.AskDaveTaylor.com/ tests the standalone "Pumice" WiFi Door/Window Sensor with smarthome app and is surprised how well it does work... with some limitations.

    Good video Dave. You did a good job explaining the magnet gap issue, that is a common problem. The gap gets even narrower on metal doors, windows, etc. About three years ago I sold my residential alarm business. I could see the writing on the wall with all of the DIY alarm products coming out and knew my small company wouldn't be able to withstand that. This technology has really made it easy for anyone to protect their property. Thanks again for doing the video.

    Dave thank you for such a nice clean description. as you mentioned there are many options. I will check out your channel for more. not everything has to be the best but has to work for what it was designed . the YoLiink does sound interesting. So my issue is that I have been looking for a way to provide mom with an emergency cord in the bath room and by the bed etc. and the systems seem very expensive when resureshing or they are wired. which is nuts in this day and age. Humble opinion. I am seriously thinking of hot glueing a small washer for the magnite to stick onto and tie a string to the screw hole. pull it and the alarm goes off. These sensers are so universal and so simple. Any way what do you think. ? again great video.

      @AskDaveTaylor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a great question and you're right, the 'pull the chain to summon emergency help' function does seem really simple given all these wifi sensors. I wonder if it's a reliability issue, so they're monitored remotely, therefore the cost? I mean, you wouldn't want to set it up, have your Mum need help, pull the cord and... nothing happens. :-|

      @@AskDaveTaylor I set up cameras and security systems and wired cameras are always more stable. But the new technology is just incredibly good. The only issues with wireless cameras are having to replace batteries and check things out every 2 months. I did buy some units and we're testing them out now. The moment they working excellent with battery life being the only issue

      @@AskDaveTaylor existing technology is hardwire technology even if there is a little bit more variability just think about how many people have absolutely no resource. Can you paint them or can you get them in dark colors?

    • @AskDaveTaylor
      @AskDaveTaylor  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Only available in white, far as I know, but since they work by magnets, I imagine that you could indeed paint them. You will occasionally need to pop the bigger unit open to replace the battery, so make sure you don't seal it as the paint dries!

    • @AskDaveTaylor
      @AskDaveTaylor  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      These are really inexpensive standalone units. They're definitely not weatherproof nor are they designed for outdoor use. But... you might be able to get away with it in some climates if your doors are protected from the elements.

      Just so IT'S COMPLETELY CLEAR, as I say in the video, it's an app for your phone that produces the notifications after pairing with and configuring the sensor. 🙂

    It's nice video. But for the door sensor use the WiFi is not good option. One the range will not be good, the second reason, the battery life would be only last for around 1 year for WiFi sensors. I bought 8 LoRa wireless door sensors installed in my house, the brand name is YoLink which you can find from Amazon. It's easy to use and covered all my 4000 sf house, the YoLink door sensor's battery life last for more than 5 years.

      New to these devices. Do you need a hub for Yolink? I'm looking for a door sensor to put on hotel doors when traveling for security reasons.

  • @siriustechxu

    The WiFi definitely is not good choice for Door sensor, Leak sensor and other battery powered sensors. The zigbee, ZWave is better. The new LoRa wireless technology will be best solution for the smart home sensors.

    • @AskDaveTaylor
      @AskDaveTaylor  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interesting. Do you have any references on LoRa and why it's better?

    • @YoLinkbyYoSmart
      @YoLinkbyYoSmart 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@AskDaveTaylor LoRa is quite new wireless technology which is owned by Semtech. LoRa has 10 times more wireless distance coverage than other popular wireless like WiFi, Zigbee. Also it is very lower power consumption. Since the LoRa doesn't increase the RF transmit power to increase the range, it has more than 20dB receive sensitively than other wireless tech. I started research the LoRa and convert this application from industry to smart home application. We created a new protocol called YoLink. A lot of my customers used YoLink products and give us the feedback, they changed the Samsung and SmartThings to YoLink system, since YoLink have much better coverage and longer battery life, and much easy to use.
