  • On November 2nd, 2014, Dr. Vandana Shiva spoke at Contois Auditorium at Burlington City Hall in support of Vermont's first in the nation no-strings-attached GMO labeling law.
The law will require labels on genetically engineered foods sold at retail outlets in the state of Vermont starting in July of 2016. The bill was signed into law on May 8, 2014. Unlike labeling laws passed in Maine and Connecticut, Vermont’s law does not require other states to act first before products will be labeled.
The day the bill was signed into law, a consortium of corporate interests including the Grocery Manufacturers Association, the International Dairy Foods Association, and the Snack Food Association announced that they would sue the state to stop the law from going into effect. Initial arguments in the case are expected to start in late 2014 or 2015. For more information please visit www.vtrighttoknowgmos.org

I read an article about no costs Solutions to drought in California, so I told them the simplest way to deal with any drought which is to cover up the soil by mulching the soil, which does a few things microorganisms like moist environments, retains water by up to 80% and blocks the Sun solar radiation which drys the soil. AdditionAl things you can do is to plant fruit trees, trees create Micro environments, in some cases those environments can create rain in small areas trees aid in that. Desertification can be stopped can be reversed but as long as we use chemicals on the soil you can put in as many resources as you want and you continueto lose the battle against droughts and soil loss.

@@DukeGMOLOL Your comments have mostly disappeared, so I will just reply here. Industrial farming may feed more people in the short term, but is it actually sustainable? Its one of the top users of fossil fuels. It exhausts the soil. And it seems to be make pests stronger (otherwise why the need for roundup). And even if industrial farming is "better", why can't there be labeling on which food contain genetically altered material? Its the consumer's right to know and choose. Why is their such fierce and expensive opposition to GMO labeling (California's Prop 37)? What is big ag so afraid of?
Also- That Genetic Literacy page- "science and not ideology" is chalk full of ideology. Not sure any of us can escape it. just saying.

      @@deskryptic --I can see them.
The soil benefits of organic are overstated deskryptic and the extra land taken from nature due to the lower yields dwarf the benefits of organic methods. Land is the most important input in agriculture. And if you add in the detrimental effects of using tillage for weed control it makes the soil claims even more overstated.
Here is a long form read that goes along with my previous link about there is not enough manure/compost to sustain organic ag methods. Here is that long form read link:
      thebreakthrough.org/articles/fixing-nitrogen
Here is a quote in this article that helps shed light on why organic methods do not overcome the burden of needing more land than conventional ag,
""Without synthetic fertilizers, farms need to grow additional crops - legumes - to provide nitrogen, and these require extra land. This "shadow land footprint" of organic farming and other agricultural systems that don’t use synthetic fertilizer is equally, if not more, important than the yield gap.
Taking it into consideration highlights how continuing to use synthetic nitrogen, albeit more efficiently and wisely, is key to growing food with minimal environmental impact.""
Here is that previous link that I had posted in case you can't see it.

The study linked in this article helps address your comment about fossil fuels in conventional agriculture.
      reason.com/2018/09/20/high-yield-modern-farming-better-for-the
Regarding the labeling of GM food the labeling law was passed and signed into law in the summer of 2016.
Please clarify your comment that "it seems to be make pests stronger (otherwise why the need for roundup)".
As for your comment about the Genetic Literacy Project please point out the ideology. And note that I did not attack your source that listed the attributes of organic farming. I dealt with with the data, not the source.

She spelled it out right there! You can't patent a natural organism, so you can't come back and say 'dont worry about GMOs it's all natural'...

Whatever we deal with nature, it is purely for money and not altruistic. People have mistaken by not acknowledging the fact that everything is evolving and no one can patent especially with nature and its creation. I bow Dr Siva for her efforts to teach everyone about this, forgotten due to illusion in this globalisation era.. Shame on Monsanto.....
