It isn't sped up, but the car has a lot of downforce. It sounds a lot faster though, because the transmission set up is very short, so that he can accelerate out of turns much faster.
In the 1970s & '80s I wrote about & photographed rallyes for publications around the world. I twice took leave of my senses and rode Navigator to get the inside story. The first time the article was called "Green Grows The Navigator". The second time was in practice on the still dirt Pikes Peak Hill Climb. That story became "I'm Too Young To Die!!!"

I just realized that when the co driver covers his face during a wreck - that he likely isn’t covering his face. But it’s to keep the notes on the same page, and probably helps him hold them altogether. I may be way over analyzing this - but I’ve seen it so many times.
