    Another great build! The bookcase is beautiful, and I wouldn't worry about the missing footage. One thing I've seen others do is add sketchup animations to replace missing footage. That's something I'll likely try in the future.

      Thanks Jonny! Sketchup is a good idea, though I am pretty terrible with it. I'm more of a paper and pencil guy. Looking forward to seeing what you can come up with.

    Wonderful work as always, love your shop and the pieces that you knock out. Im curious about your milling process, as I have a similar set up. With your rough lumber are you skip planning everything and not doing a face and then jointing an edge? Id really like to improve my milling and efficiency as I feel like this is where it can all go wrong.

    • @shaunboydmadethis
      @shaunboydmadethis  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Cody, really appreciate it! Yeah, I do a lot of skip planing since I only have a 6" jointer, and I prefer to keep the width of the lumber. If a board is really wonky, I will set up a sled for the planer and shim it up to get a flat face. Would love to have a bigger jointer, but you have to work with what you've got.

    It's a nice piece. I liked your method of drilling shelf pins. I've always obseesses over getting them perfect and built dedicated jigs for each piece and I've bought a couple but was never happy with the spacing on the commercially available ones. I have a half dozen completely abandoned project videos because I missed filming important steps, it's so easy to forget when your focus is the work, not the documentation. Good job pulling it together.

    • @jeremyspecce
      @jeremyspecce 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Driftless Joinery I agree about the shelf drilling jig, very simple and once you establish the spacing for a project you can use it for the whole thing.

    • @shaunboydmadethis
      @shaunboydmadethis  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, shelf pins can be a pain. But just like you said, it is nice to make your own jig that works for the specific piece you are making. And yes, filming always comes second in my head when making a piece, and it finally caught up with me on this one. Glad you still enjoyed it.

    I wouldn't apologize -- I actually like this format, it adds some variety. And looks like you got a new camera and/or new lens? Footage looks improved compared to past videos.

    • @shaunboydmadethis
      @shaunboydmadethis  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, man. Really appreciate it! Trying to slowly incorporate more talking. I have actually had this camera for a long time (Canon 7D) I just rarely use it because of the extra time it takes to set up shots. No autofocus, no flip out screen to see what I am shooting, terrible audio. I am hoping to get something new soon, so I can get similar quality without sacrificing the extra time.

    • @modustrial
      @modustrial 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used the 7D for many years and after shooting a couple YT videos, upgraded to the 7D Mk II. That was before the 6D Mk II came out tho. I would recommend the 6D Mk II or 80D over the 7D Mk II because of the flip out screen on these. I highly recommend the upgrade because (i) adding autofocus during video is a HUGE timesaver (all three do this), and (ii) with the 6D Mk II or 80d flip out screen doing on-screen segments is so much easier because you don't have to do trial and error to get yourself in frame. I only went with the 7D Mk II because I do underwater photography as well, and there wasn't a housing option for the 80D.
      For any of these, you'll want a lav mic. I initially went with a $30 corded lav mic which sounded good enough, but the cord meant using it was a pain. Eventually, I decided to plunk down the cash for the Rode wireless lav (found one used on Ebay for about $300 USD). Expensive, but totally worth it. Now I can just wear it all the time in the shop, so its ready to go when I decide there is something I want to talk about on camera.
      Also, as interim solution for framing yourself, you can get an ipad or phone mount for $10 to attach it to your mic stand, and there is an app called DSLR controller that is $8, and allows you to see your camera's screen on your phone/tablet. This is what I'm using now since the 7D Mk II doesn't have the flip out screen.

    • @shaunboydmadethis
      @shaunboydmadethis  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, that is exactly what I am looking to get. Thanks for giving me all your firsthand info, there are only so many online reviews I can read. I used to shoot a lot years ago, and had a whole set-up for my 7D, but it was all based around being behind the camera and shooting someone/something else. This whole filming yourself thing has thrown me for a loop, it just feels so weird not to be able to see what I am shooting. And I used to love spending time setting up shots, but that was when the footage was my main focus, and now it definitely comes second to the build being my main focus. So I agree, autofocus, and flip-out screen are the two main things I am looking for. Thanks again for the info!

    • @modustrial
      @modustrial 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I hear you about it not being the main focus. Oh, and totally forgot to mention Canon just announced that new mirrorless camera that shoots 4k and has a flip out display. It definitely might be worth a look.
      One thing I've found is that I have slowly started to enjoy filming myself more, as I get the hang of it. I'm starting to see filming my projects a bit more artistically, and as a result am enjoying the process more. I think it is frustrating at first for folks like us, because it is somewhat like having to learn to walk again. But, it gets better. I was talking to Zach from ZH Fabrications and he is going through the same thing now... finally starting to view the filming more as an enjoyable aspect of the creative process than a chore. I'm guessing you'll experience the same once you upgrade to something. And selfishly, I can't wait to see what you produce when you do, because your videos are already really good!

    • @modustrial
      @modustrial 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      ps If you haven't already, I recommend watching some Peter McKinnon videos, and maybe some camera-oriented Jon Olsson videos, for some cinematic inspiration. I really like how the edit and cut to the music.

      Haha, I can't let a piece of furniture leave without giving it the official test.
      The Domino is an amazing tool, and has paid for itself countless times over. Since I make furniture for a living, time is hugely important to me, and that is where the domino shines. No regrets here.

    I have to ask... Do you source all the walnut locally or online? One aspect of your designs reminds of what come out of the 60s & 70s. One thing I will build in due time is a "Stereo Console" from that era. Update it with better speakers, blue tooth & some serious power.

    • @shaunboydmadethis
      @shaunboydmadethis  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I get all of my lumber locally from a supplier called Aura Hardwoods. A stereo console sounds like a great build, I have just dabbled a bit with audio, and it is always so much fun. Good luck with it!

    Nice job, bud - finished product looks great. Any concern with wood movement and that base? I suppose that panel isn’t very wide, just curious what your thoughts were.

    • @shaunboydmadethis
      @shaunboydmadethis  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, really appreciate it! You are right it isn't very wide, so there shouldn't be a ton of movement. I also elongated the pilot holes in the base to allow the screws to move a bit just to be safe.

    • @ataria5609
      @ataria5609 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Damn you actually read comments! I made myself sound demanding. Of course it was only a suggestion to put track information. However if you use free-licenced music it's a nice touch to give recognition to the artist.
      I would like to refer to another popular suggestion under this video - "talk more". Personally I love your current form of videos and I don't think we need more voiceover videos on youtube. Instead consider adding subtitles. Sometimes it's hard to understand what you're doing and why - especially for beginners. Additional info like what kind of wood we see on camera and what kind of tool (not talking about brand - rather what type and what for) you're using might help. Of course regular viewers would know all these things after several videos but don't worry - this is not annoying to see same things explained over and over if you do it subtle (and in form of subtitles :P). Again, just a suggestion.

    • @shaunboydmadethis
      @shaunboydmadethis  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No worries! One of the best parts about youtube is hearing suggestions from people and always trying to get better at what I am doing. I have had a couple other people suggest subtitles of some kind, which I think is a great idea. I might try to work that in at some point. Really appreciate you taking the time to give your feedback and suggestions!

  • @ebarekati
    @ebarekati 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very nice build! quick question! I noticed you didn't joint the lumber before planing it, was it because the pieces were too wide? were you worried about curved surfaces?

    • @shaunboydmadethis
      @shaunboydmadethis  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, my jointer is pretty small, so I don't always face joint my lumber. I take care to find straight boards, and can usually orient the boards during glue-ups to get rid of any bow. Definitely wish I had a bigger jointer.

    • @shaunboydmadethis
      @shaunboydmadethis  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You are one of my favorite new makers, but the repetitive techno music hurts.

    I ❤ your videos, but man, that music was annoying. You can narrate as a voice over; you have an excellent speaking voice.
