    1. Please watch the whole video before saying anything about Blade Runner in the comments section--I hold off talking about it until the very end.
    2. If you're not in the loop, this video was supposed to go up on July 13th, but it got a copyright claim and I didn't have time to re-edit it and re-upload it at the time, so I just disputed it and waited for it to clear.

      I was just gonna say how this takes elements from the Novel, infinity welcomes careful drivers, with the crew unknowingly being trapped in their fantasy, ending with lister driving off to be with Kochanski, minus the open ending on whether or not he choses to stay.

    Fun fact. During his role on Coronation, Craig Charles received a six month suspension from the show after a scandal emerged that he had blown thousands of pounds binging on both drugs, booze and prostitutes. His final scene before his hiatus was him heading off to the toilet. When he finally returned to Coronation Street after those six months, his opening scene had him returning from the loo. This has gone down as the longest toilet break in TV history.

    There was a missed opportunity here to write in a parody of the Roy Batty speech in Blade Runner
    Lister - I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Getting attacked by human-hating simulants and defeating them in an old west video game. I've shot a planet into the nearest star with a pool cue. I've met, drank with and screwed my female parallel universe double. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in a vindaloo. That reference to Saturday evening programming, pointing at freaks and laughing at them, is a reference to variety shows. Saturday is "variety night" in the UK, and all the shows like Britain's Got Talent, The X Factor, The Voice and Strictly Come Dancing, all air on Saturday

    Sweet, the video's finally public again! Excellent work as always. :D
    The only thing I feel I can add about Back to Earth is that the Coronation Street involvement was definitely a lot more of an in-joke for British viewers (maybe slightly too much?). Corrie is the longest running TV soap in UK history - it started in 1960! - and is still incredibly popular, so even people who've never seen the show would be vaguely familiar with a lot of the actors and the titular street itself. Craig Charles was arguably more famous in 2009 for playing Lloyd in Coronation Street than he was for playing Lister in Red Dwarf.
    A detail Back to Earth doesn't really make clear is that the street, the shop and the pub at the beginning of episode 3 are all just sets, because it's such a permanent production that they decided to use The Truman Show method (sans the baby-kidnapping... as far as I know). You probably picked up on it, but BtE definitely seems to assume you already knew beforehand.
    I also think Chiggins_ is being way too harsh in his assessment. Coronation Street is on all year but it consistently gets 5-10 million viewers per episode. Saying that some of the most recognizable faces on British TV are "Z-list celebrities" is like saying that Jim Parsons is a nobody just because you hate The Big Bang Theory.

    I think that the Tyrell Naylor character's pretenses of ending the series on a profound and bittersweet note was somewhat intended to reference the way that the final Blackadder series ended. That has been seen as a high watermark for comedic works that want to tie things up with a bit on inverted bathos (silliness becoming serious expectantly).
    Of course Blackadder is a historical comedy that lends itself well to tragedy, but I like the writer taking a moment to jab at his own pretenses of profundity.

    It’s too easy to hate on Back to Earth. Not perfect by any means but I still got a soft spot for it. Plus if it truly was that bad then Dave would never have commissioned the seasons after it, so at the very least it was important for the series future...

  • @kickingroses8925
    @kickingroses8925 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    16:25 - Hey now, I was watching Red Dwarf when I was three! It had no damaging effects on me....except when I told my playschool teacher to smeg off. Luckily, she was a fan, but she had to have a word with my dad. XD
    17:40 - the one time I laughed out loud during the whole special.
    19:00 - Yeah, this is the cringe worthy equivalent of Dimensions in Time (the Dr. Who and EastEnders crossover). Soaps and Sci-fi should really stay far away from each other imo.
    20:55 - Okay I want that doorbell.
    I'm kinda with SF Debris on this one, I've only seen Blade Runner once but I still found the references repetitive. I kinda wish they had parodied a mix of sci fi films rather than focusing on one. I did like all the little RD call-backs and easter eggs. Also this paved the way for the reboot seasons which I love so I gotta thank it for that.

    • @M-E_123
      @M-E_123 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interestingly this wasn't strictly true then, and is completely false now.
      UKTV has always been part owned by the BBC through BBC Worldwide (the commercial part of the BBC that sells BBC shows to broadcasters / networks / streaming platforms in other countries) - the idea behind the UKTV network was originally to show old British TV shows on channels offered as part of a Satellite / Cable TV basic package (later also on digital "freeview" TV) - and later branching out into making their own new shows (which is how Red Dwarf got new episodes after the BBC no longer wanted to make them & after the film failed to get funding) and it would make money from getting a cut of subscriptions & adverts (the BBC doesn't run adverts as it's funded by the TV Liscence).
      UKTV was essentially founded by BBC Worldwide to commercially exploit old BBC programmes on the (at the time) new TV platforms introduced in the UK during the 90's & they partnered with other TV companies / outside investors to raise funding for the required infrastructure / staffing - BBC supplied the shows, the partners covered the start up / initial running costs & they split the profits.
      I'm not sure if the BBC was always the majority shareholder in UKTV, or if they first started out as a minor partner in the venture - but it explains why UKTV has always had old BBC shows making up the bulk of its schedules.
      But now (like literally sometime in the last 1-2 years) UKTV has become wholly owned by BBC Worldwide as they bought out their partners (likely because profits have dropped due to streaming reducing viewers for broadcast TV - and so reducing ad revenue & the commercial investors wanted to cash out).
      We don't know yet what impact this will have going forward but potentially we could see fewer original programmes from UKTV channels going forward.

    • @TroyConvers5000
      @TroyConvers5000 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No, UKTV is part of the BBC, but a subdivision aimed at the larger commercial TV sector, like BBC Enterprises.

    So Corrie is a soap opera that airs about 8 times a week and has been going for nearly 60 years. It has like nearly 10,000 episodes and since it's a soap opera, you only need to see one episode to have seen all of them. They're all badly written and acted. But yeah, that dude and the girl in the shop are both actors in Corrie. They were on the set on the day Red Dwarf recorded there and were asked if they wanted to appear. You say they're "well known British actors", but nah, they're not. They're like, Z-list celebrities famous for being in Corrie and nothing else

  • @JamesPlaysGames95

    for the people not from UK/Ireland, the other show is Coronation Street. it is the worlds longest Soap Opera from 1960 to present day(yes. much longer than the simpsons and WWE). The show is set around the west side of Manchester in the fictional area known as Coronation Street.
    The "friend" of Craig is Simon Gregson who plays Steve McDonald in the show. I found it hilarious when they did the Manchester accents while talking Michelle Keegan(another cast memeber in Coronation Street) in the shop

    Back when I watched it as it aired, I enjoyed Part 1 since we got Red Dwarf back, but was put off by Part 2 and mostly Part 3 up until the reveal, since I've never been a fan of the 'go to real world and find out they're fictional' story element in things, and the Blade Runner references weirded me out since I didn't see that till years later. But after rewatching it (and seeing Blade Runner too) I learned to appreciate it more than ever, especially since it gave us several more series to love. One of those cases where it takes a while to come to grips with it, and by now I enjoy it the same as every other series. ^^

    Back to Earth was disappointing on first viewing, but now close to a favourite. It seemed such a departure from the regular type of stories, even though it really wasn't; more a big concept episode stretched over three parts. If I have a couple of hours free, Back to Earth is something that I can put on without any regrets. Oh, and I enjoy the Blade Runner call-backs, even having seen BR multiple times, in all of it's different iterations.

    To be honest, the whole "Rimmer's got music to listen to" thing was riDICulous and forced. At NO POINT in the show's history has Rimmer ever been in charge of watching a console of any kind, and then started listening to loud music, while finger dancing and ignoring the pleas of his shipmates! Although he could be a bit cowardly at times, and has recommended having panic attacks under scanner tables, he was always where he needed to be when he needed to be there in a pinch. He even tried to take out their future selves in an attempt to save all of their lives. Now I'm expected to believe that he has turned into a nerdly teenager sitting in his room, daydreaming about his most recent school boy crush...while his friends DIE below him! Come on....
    Although YOUR line...suddenly, testicles everywhere was TOP NOTCH! ha ha ha

There are some really funny jokes, the cast are great and it looks far more expensive than it was. I’ve been watching your RD videos and I’ve really enjoyed them. I’ve been a fan of the Small Rouge One since the start (or The End if you like) back in 1988. I was 11 and it has me hooked from Day 1.
    Did you know that another film that influenced the show was John Carpenter’s Dark Star? Maybe you’ve already mentioned it and I’ve missed it.
    Keep up the good work. You’ve done the Dwarfers proud.

    Back to Earth is easily the weakest installment of the Dave era... But even then, it's still damn fun. The actors were having a blast playing their most iconic roles again, and the story itself is a genuinely fascinating outing and solid companion piece to "Back to Reality", the best episode of the entire show. What keeps it from being as good as what follows in the Dave era is that the miniseries drags when they get to the Coronation Street filming set, and the lack of a live audience is very noticeable. Still, not a bad start to the era when Red Dwarf found its stride again.
    [Series X and beyond are much better, tho]

    I myself enjoyed parts of Back to Earth and have to thank it as without it we probably wouldn't have series 10 etc.

    The freak show reference Rimmer makes is most likely a comment on inane talent contest programs like Britain's Got Talent or X Factor some of which literally look and feel like 18th century exercises in public derision the way acts are paraded before a baying audience that either cheer or mock them. I'm really not a fan of Back to Earth, number one cos as per usual Doug Naylor does nothing to properly address the previous series' cliffhanger as if hoping everyone will just have forgotten it especially since it had been a decade since it happened in this case and number two cos when a show starts getting meta it undermines the conceit of the world itself when you start having nods and winks to real life so the less said about this episode the better for me frankly.

    My opinion...They should have used this to properly end the series. It kind of does-but it a similar way to "Only the Good"" where it doesn't really feel like it. A somewhat soft reboot. I hate to say it, but Red Dwarf for me has entered Supernatural/Simpsons territory of maybe being on too long for its own good.
