I think an important thing to note here is that this is the first time many younger people have really taken notice of this conflict, e.g., quite young individuals who aren’t old enough to remember older flashpoints.
In contrast, older generations have witnessed this conflict persist over the years and often hold more entrenched viewpoints.
There are a few other reasons as well:
Antisemitism: Many people simply don’t believe that Jews have the right to defend themselves or to exist at all.
Political ignorance: A significant number of people seem unaware that Hamas isn’t just a terrorist organization; it governs Gaza. So when Hamas attacks Israel, it essentially means that Gaza, as a region, has attacked Israel (even though ordinary Gazans often have no say in Hamas’s actions).
Historical ignorance: Many individuals live such sheltered lives that they’ve forgotten the true nature of war and are unaware of the complex history of this conflict. Often, they are influenced by one-sided PR contents pushed by Arab countries and Hamas.
The Oppressor-oppressed narrative: Jews are a successful minority. If you tend to view the world through the lens of power dynamics and make the presumption that all you need to explain human relations and history is the narrative of oppressor and oppressed, then the success of the Jewish community can be quite challenging to reconcile. Typically, minorities are expected to fail when oppressed, yet the Jews succeed wherever they are, and, of course, there are complex reasons for that.
White guilt: A lot of people on the far left see all Israelis as Jews and all Jews as white Europeans, so they see Israel as a European colony oppressing the indigenous brown people, and project onto them all the guilt they feel about what their colonial ancestors did. However, this perspective often overlooks the following facts:
1. About 20% of Israelis are not Jewish, with many being native Druze and Bedouin who are passionately loyal Israeli citizens.
2. Half of Israeli Jews are not of European ancestry and are a mix of Middle Easterners, North Africans, sub-Saharan Africans and Asians.
3. Some of those purely Middle Eastern Jews have never lived anywhere other than what is now Israel for thousands of years, but have been there since Biblical times.
4. Recent converts aside, even “European” Jews test out as 50-60% Levantine in origin.
Covert racism: The people who see Jews as white Europeans also see them as therefore civilized beings who can and should be held to a high standard, but in their innermost heart of hearts they think all brown people are “wogs”, primitive and childlike, and so can’t be blamed for massacring babies because they’re not morally responsible for their own actions, the poor simple creatures.
From the very beginning, Hamas has been engaged in a bloody and an ongoing war with Fatah and has eliminated, or evicted Fatah and the Palestinian Authority from Gaza in the Fatah-Hamas conflict of 2007, during which 600 Palestinians lost their lives in the crossfire.
Given this complex situation, when someone proclaims support for the cause of “fighting Palestine,” it begs the question: which vision of Palestine are they referring to? Fatah’s Palestine, Hamas’ Palestine, the PLO’s Palestine, Islamic Jihad’s Palestine, or the PA’s Palestine?
Therefore, when keyboard warriors and demonstrators take to the streets, influenced by one-sided PR content promoted by Hamas and Arab nations, and chant slogans like “Save Gaza” and “Free Palestine,” I can’t help but wonder: save them from what, or from whom, exactly?
You can support the Palestinian people instead of Hamas. Supporting Hamas is the worst thing you can do to the people of Gaza. Hamas leaders are religious fanatics and money-suckers whose only goal is to get rich through aid money and exterminate all the Jews to establish a wider caliphate. They don't care about any civilians and are delighted by the high death numbers.
Here, I’d like to clear up a common misconception: the notion that “Jews deliberately expelled Arabs”. That’s just not the case. These events took place during the 1948 war when the “Arab higher committee” urged Arabs to vacate the area so that the Arab armies could launch war against Israel.
Majority of them left voluntarily upon learning about the impending war and receiving promises from Arab leaders that they would defeat Israel. Yes, some Arabs were indeed deported by the Zionists in response to attacks by Arab militants following Israel’s declaration of independence.
The UN has partitioned a Palestine Arab state for them as well (while also safeguarding the “full rights” of Arabs, Bedouin Arabs, and Druze who wanted to stay in Israel many who also helped Israel conflicts, unlike in Muslim countries where non-Muslims are treated as second-class citizens and were required to pay Jizya) which the Arab countries spoiled.
Some may argue that Gypsies don’t have their own country and they were also persecuted by the Nazis. Perhaps that is evidence of further injustice against the Roma and Sinti peoples and not evidence that Jewish sovereignty movements were unnecessary.
Militant Palestinians evidently convince themselves that war serves their purpose. Motivated by the anti-imperial spirit spreading throughout the Middle East, they mislead whole generations by promoting a false stereotype of Israelis as settlers and colonizers without ties to the country and therefore bound to run away from it as soon as they face resistance.
Educated imams preach with conviction that Jews are descendants of apes and pigs. To a committed Muslim, bargaining about territory and sovereignty would be a sinful surrender in the devotional and eschatological struggle against great spiritual enemies.
Islamic theology and law make it unmistakably clear that the proper response of Muslims to Jews is jihad, the term for war against unbelievers. Nothing else will do.
The high and mighty in Palestine, as well as the poor and humble, have to act in ways that gain honor and avoid whatever might bring shame down on them. That is how all-important public opinion is determined.
Repeated defeat at the hands of the despised Jews is a shame so absolute that only military success is able to wipe it away. Supremacy is the desired end. In the circumstances, bargaining is out of the question.
Any Palestinian who conducted himself according to the Israeli value system of compromise would become a self-declared loser, disgraced and humiliated by the shame of it and immediately rejected by his society. Any normalization of the relationship with Israel is considered a crime.
In his day, Yasser Arafat exploited peacemaking as an opportunity to deceive. The assassinations of King Abdullah I of Jordan and President Anwar Sadat of Egypt serve as a warning to anyone tempted to act outside the traditional values' system.
Outsiders have no means of knowing if Muslims secretly repudiate jihad and would make the same sacrifices for peace as Israelis but are too intimidated to say so aloud.
The real moral of this polemic is that those with responsibility for the good order of the world give priority to Islamic codes of behavior, and this doesn’t work out well.
