The Untold Truth Of Whitesnake

  • Whitesnake was one of the most famous hair metal bands of the late ‘80s, but they have origins far removed from the music they’re best known for. The band was founded by David Coverdale, who had previously been the lead singer of Deep Purple, and Whitesnake’s early albums reflect his blues-rock roots. Gradually, Coverdale wanted to shift to a more heavy metal sound, and when his bandmates didn’t agree, he just replaced them. From the song they wrote for a blues legend to the three attempts at their most famous song, let’s take a look at the untold truth of Whitesnake.

My mother, God Rest her soul, who loved gospel and bluegrass music, it didn't take long for her to fall in love with the music of Whitesnake, and we'd jam out together back in the day listening to the radio. For that reason this band holds a special place in my heart

My favorite albums of theirs are definitely the 1987 and 1989 albums because they were more hard rock / glam metal sounding which appealed to me more then their early bluesy sound. Also David Coverdale did a fantastic power ballad to the movie Days of Thunder called Last Note Of Freedom which absolutely epic.

Back in January 28 1986 I was really down while I watched on TV the Shuttle Challenger blown out of the sky. The 10 years prior were just a memory. I ended up on the coast of Southern Oregon. 1971 El Camino $50.00 cash and 1/2 tank of gas. I was sleeping in a tent and using a Habachi charcoal fold-up barbeque which I still have after all these years. I was a subcontractor for a paint company when I bought a used tractor/trailer. I was a private contractor and went on to buy properties in Oregon and Alaska. White Snake came to the Salem Fairground to perform a concert. My tractor and I were across the street living in the campground.
The song Here I Go Again was on the FM dial when I was starting my new life.

I had the privilege to see Whitesnake live in 2019. Unfortunately, during the song "Still Of The Night" it started raining heavily and the wind blew uncontrollably. Now everytime I hear that song it reminds me of the awful weather from the concert. Luckily the storm started almost at the very end of the concert, so I didn't miss much.

I knew that they were around since the 70's, and that they'd been big in Europe years before breaking big in America. I knew an earlier version of "Here I Go Again"(MUCH different from the '87 version) appeared on an earlier album, as I've collected their back catalog(pre-'87), but I never knew what the song was truly about. I knew about the line- up in the '87\'88 videos not being the same as on the '87 album, and about the various line-up changes.

Neil Murray said once in a 1997 interview that Coverdale's claims of vocal problems during the making of the '87 album, were most likely due to psychosomatic disorder (in other words, Coverdale had an imaginary illness).

Micky moody left towards the more metallic sound .
Ainsley dunbar was just session drummer as i remember .
Sykes , unfortunally , was quite ( or still ) immature and impatient and searched troubles that lead to his eviction . While David was recovering , and tried to replace David with having some sort of leadership too .
      Not surprised he got fired.
      Neil murray wasnt called again.
Vivian campbell left on his own.
David disbanded WS in 1991 ...
      .

I would say acclaimed success in Europe and Japan too .
As usual , politic market of US doesnt want to allow much an european band unless you polish your music .
Personnally i like all sorts some of songs of WS but sorry i can't say that 1987 or Slip is particulery better than the earlier stuff thar was much balanced , raw and showed wider influences .
Such soul , funky vibe and even Jazz fusion acrobatics ( Try Nightawk ) ..

I have heard "Whitesnake" twice: First a concert on cassette in the year 1982 in a bus for the pupil exchange from Germany to France. Just terrible noise and that usual guitar solo at overlength. ABBA took over after that. Then I saw them on TV with "Here I Go Again". Cheesy hair metal sucking in excess. At school we, the boys, were into Hard Rock and Heavy Metal, but no Whitesnake fans anywhere. It must have been a girls´ thing like Def Leppard. Dave´s shlong, so long, so what?
