Thomas and friends is what awakened by love of trains and railway’s in the first place.
I still remember watching cranky bugs for the first time and how charming the early episodes of the show were.

I think we all acted like that. Personally, I have my late, beloved grandfather , who was a former railwayman, to thank for getting started with model trains.
Robert Jones , same here , my grandfather's passion was Lionel model trains , and he worked for the Maine Central Railroad, for some time, though he didn't really like working on real locomotives.

Thomas was also how I got into real locomotives within time so much in fact, they created a fictional railway that’s heavily based off the railway series and an honor of the original creator of Thomas the Tank Engine. The great London British Ireland and Scottish railway I think the original creator of Thomas the Tank Engine would consider this an honor do you agree?

NWR astrotrain , Your layout sounds very impressive.
To add to that, I’m glad they acknowledged how Thomas propelled the hobby back to the mainstream world. So many people seem to sniff at the creation of Rev. Awdry, but one could argue that his characters saved model railways.

I always love watching someone using live steam and live diesel as well as electric trains, mainly because it felt SO REAL!..
Thanks for reminding me why I'm sad I never saw or experienced this, as a teen in 2019.
Wonderful documentary thanks for the upload. It brought back a whole host of very happy memories and I thought it was a comprehensive and well balanced view.
It just about encapsulated all my own experience having started with Hornby O gauge clockwork, then Trix Twin which was a really good system albeit cruder than Hornby Dublo but technically advanced, then I went to Hornby and then Triang and finally Lionel as O gauge always seemed more realistically hefty. As for scale versus toy trains I'm in the latter camp. All those working accessories and other gimmicks just add to the fun. Lionel is too expensive in the UK just as over here in the States Hornby is a bit too pricey for me now though I'd like to have another Hornby layout.
Ian was a great modeller and wrote many great books on the subject, sadly he died in 2022

This documentary was suprisingly fascinating even though I've never been captivated by model railways myself.
I was reading Railway Magazine for 1936 today and there is an article saying that fun is made of adults 'playing' trains even though they are scratch built. This is different when model ships are referred to. I have scratch-built my models since the 1980s, working to EM gauge (18mm) and working in metal, soldering and doing my own casting. I still get referred to as playing with toys from a grown-up son. I built two 1/16 full size (9cmm gauge) from scratch but I do not tell anyone what my hobby is.
A good summary of how we got to where we are today in the hobby, but omits the resurgence of early tinplate models by manufacturers like Ace, Darstaed and ETS. The North American experience would take another series altogether.

10 people with no imagination, no enthusiasm to build and create. Many out there that think all should be ready assembled. A lot of work can go into a model railroad. But in the end it is that work that makes it all fun and creates a world from your mind to the plywood.

Same. In fact, I think it's safe to say that a large proportion of young railway enthusiasts owe their love of trains to Thomas. Whatever other people might think of him nowadays, he's been a godsend to railway enthusiasm, and that's saying a lot for a children's character.
Our Hornby Triang from the 60s is very limited but still works. But the issue for me and my lad is how to add to it in a digital age.....
+Christopher Wright I'm pretty sure you can solder it so you can add the dcc chip. Just check online at Hornby I hope I helped
Christopher Wright Unfortunately, a lot of them are split frame chassis locos and wouldn't work well with DCC.
Although I prefer to run Triang stuff the classic way. Ozone and all!
Nil desperandum, chaps! There's still plenty of second hand Triang and Hornby Dublo around, including original track and points to turn your single oval into an empire! Forget digital, it's all the king's new clothes. Keep it vintage!

In 1960s Australia I used to do model railways based on Hornby, Triang and some kit bashing and scratch building and I would have been ~20 before I even heard of Lionel. I knew of the German brand Marklin and a French brand Jouef though. I'd have given real money, which of course I didn't have for a Bassett-Lowke model. US magazines just didn't circulate in the British Commonwealth, except the Sat. Evening Post which was pretty much only in libraries.
Codenwarra Cove I see. In America theyre pretty much synonymous with the hobby. I assumed theyd be mentioned in an historical overview...maybe how one influenced the other.
So it does happen both ways! I've seen so many people complain about how American documentaries don't mention the contributions of the British, looks like the same is true for British documentaries not mentioning American contributions.
I am 15 and I still love Thomas the Tank engine. But still I hate the miller era.

Odd beliefs, I’ve always modeled about a half Century or more before my time. I’ve never liked the railways I grew up in nor live in. I’ve always modeled early 1900s and cheat and add motive power from the 1940s as the newest. All heavyweight coaches from the era. British trains are the same about 1910- 1940 that I model. BR never even exists yet on my railway.

Love for model railways requires one to appreciate the art and elegance of the lost age of steam or the industrial grind of a modern suburban route. If that makes one a dork, than I’m happy to be one.

To what extent is this a displacement activity; recreating a 'nicer' Britain than we currently have instead of making this present world better? Have these blokes withdrawn from what they _should_ be doing, or is it at least something? Retreating from the problem into a fantasy world?
I love the hobby. However I think this hobby is dangerous if used incorrectly. I see many people go beyond using these trains as a means of entertainment. I see these people using the miniatures to remain stuck in the past. It keeps their mind, mentality stuck in the past, like a coping mechanism. Guys who model a specific year and refuse to run anything but prototypical equipment worry me.
