  • Finals were in Atlanta Georgia. The Garfield Cadets glowed golden like Gods as they introduced the world to the next level of Drum Corps winning the world Championchip. We had a stunning year ourselves in the Freelancers, we were the best fed corps of the year with our own mobile kitchen (Chuckwagon). We gave the gaurd 20 sapranos and taught them how to play ballzondo whole notes to the opening "You're still a young Man" by Tower of Power. We were arguably the loudest Corps of the year. We also did singing/vocals as a first, at least to us in our era. Back in the Day, California had 5 of the top 12 , and a few more in the 24. This is most of our show, I had to cut a couple of minutes so it would fit on TH-cam. Have you seen Drum Corps Lately? these kids are marching and performing in this day and age what seem inconcievable to me from our basic styls. Wow !! Enjoy. You can see me at 9:27 part of this video playing saprano wailing away. Thanks for enjoying, its a great feeling to contribute. Thanks DCI and IAMAI
    Post Script: John Zimney, great decision to add that last lowering at the end, so much emotion with that kiss. Thank you are you and your brothers help in my childhood development. I don't think I could have been a Firefighter for 30 years without the experience in the Drum Corps.

    The single season of DCI that I marched was 1994, ten years after this, so this show is "before my time". But I have loved, loved, loved this show after discovering it a couple of years ago! (It helps that I am a huge Tower of Power fan!) The Freelancers were amazing and are missed! Thanks for sharing this video -- I'd only ever heard audio of the show until finding this video!

    This is one of my top ten drum and bugle corps shows of all time, and I was in the activity for more then 50 years, the music selections, the overall production, and corps general appearance was simply stunning. I just want to thank and congratulate everyone who played a part is such a enjoyable, historic and truly crowd pleasing show. It is my true belief that the Freelancers never got the true recognition or ranking that they deserved by the D.C.I. judges. Maybe it was all simply over their heads.

    As a 13 year old trumpet player who lived in an isolated rural south Georgia discovering dci and particularly THIS show I was able to take the inspiration and go on to march dci and receive a college scholarship. But it all started with this show and the soprano and flugle and baritone soloists and that Billy Preston number! Thanks Freelancers and for posting this. You never know where the music will reach!

    One of the greatest all time dci shows I've ever witnessed, the music was outstanding and performed excellently by all sections, the soloist were unbelievable. Honestly the Freelancers were one of the greatest corps in DCI history, but then back then the Corps were much better over all then the corps of today, and the music was much more entertaining for the crowd.

  • @richmondmk

    The mega forte's came from 16 more horns! Freelancers taylored 16 cadet uniforms so the male rifle line could quickly tear away (velcro) sleeves. The guard's uniforms change @115-120. Watch the Sop's rank rotate to the No1 side/20-45 Yd front side-line.

      You Contras always impressed me. Never could complain about holding a soprano, all I had to do is look at you guys and I had no standing. We always seemed to be like heroes getting to play the melodies but we on the top of the register always knew who the true heroes were. First thing I ever did to size up a horn line was count the contras.

    This was one of the most well rounded, musical and beautifully performed productions on the DCI Field that year. It took one from the sizzling heat of "Tower of Power's You're still a young man" opening fanfare to one of the most Beautiful Arrangements ever performed on the field of "Billy Preston's With you I'm born again. and I would have stopped there but then they added a closing fanfare as if to revive you. In truth and my opinion, that was one of the best shows, if not the best show on the field that season, if not ever. That was straight forward, in your face drum and bugle corps long before started to DCI lose its mind and throw all of it class, history, and tradition totally out of the window some three decades later. And, went from a bunch of different Corps with individual Styles and Music. to a homogenized Bunch of glorified marching bands that all sound the same and are blindly following each other into the overpriced, demise of what was once the standard of musical marching art activities around the world. SAD!!!

    • @cicook7
      @cicook7 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      So much to say about the class that was Freelancers, then we kinda made bad statements about people doing what this inspired.
      Let's not let our expectations and experience privilege our tone of voice to what the activity is today.
      It is what it is because of what was. Try to enjoy how it has all been done to make it what it is today.

      @@cicook7 what it is today is a marching band no longer a real drum and bugle Corp. Former member of the Long Island Sunrisers 1964 through 1968. Today is December 31st 2021.

  • @askmeif
    @askmeif  15 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    DCI put us on tour, and there was a show or two we would win because we went to shows where there were no real contenders. Freelancers peaked in 1983 I think in 8th place. We took 9th in 82 and 84. It was really cool beating Vanguard in marching for some of the early shows, then they just took off ... Zoom

  • @askmeif
    @askmeif  16 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I marched in 82, skipped 83 and then again in 84 so I don't think we ever met. If you were like me, you were probably pretty familiar with the 84 show, like I was familiar with the 81 show when I first marched in 82. The guys would warm up with last years show riffs, and it was a great motivation to see last years show and wonder if I could ever do something like that.

  • @newtojo
    @newtojo 15 ปีที่แล้ว

    The corps was short on red Cadet jackets, so the cymbals had to give theirs up. The following year ('85), Freelancers switched to those crazy multicolored, multi-flap velcro unis.

    When we (BD) first saw sops being tossed like guard gear we were stunned...then we realized they were being thrown around by MEMBERS of the guard AND they were old valve-rotors, so we relaxed.
    However, the corps smashing their horns into their chest buckles on parade rest in the retreat block always made us cringe en masse...we babied our horns.
    Always kinda wished they've done the opening vocal in French at the Montreal show.
    Yes...the Freeloaders/Flearanchers/Freebasers (heh)....not a bad corps at all.

    In 1988 The Freelancers were having some difficulties and as a result several horn players joined us in Concord and Mario was one of them. He played the soprano solo in the opener Happy Days Are Here Again. He was a very nice guy and well liked. If you go to the BD site and look under Alumni "Through the Years" there is a roster for each year and I think his e-mail address is there.
