Last thing you want when pouring concrete is dryness and heat. The concrete needs the moisture for the chemical reactions that set it, and heat can cause the reactions to go too fast, making for weak concrete.
the mix design was most likely not spec'd out to be poured on a 8+ inch slump, which in result can diminish the strength of said concrete by 10% of the designed strength per 1 inch over the spec

You should install 30 all season prefab yurts on top of wooden decks in various locations on the abandoned resort, at least the resort can be up and running to a certain degree while you build more permanent structures, should be able to do it relatively cheap too. 👍
One field glamping one field camping bathrooms that serve each field. Would be the best option after his event space in terms of investment & speed & numbers of people in. His admin building really is going to make it possible though.
Different areas with different themes. I’ve suggested getting those storage sheds that look like cabins. They have porches. You can make cute rooms out of them. Have an area like Curry Village tent cabins. There are so many possibilities. He has a blank canvas to work with.
We replaced the old wooden docks at Boot Key Marina with concrete docks and had to pump concrete hundreds of feet. That sometimes causes it to harden up while it's in the pipes and hoses. You can imagine how much fun that is.
You need to use Hydro seed on the walls of the firing range. In the long run, it’ll be cheaper than seed. It will stick better and it includes good fertilizer.
Mat the new smoker pit area i would set up an outdoor kitchen area so catering or staff can have a base for serving food during events. And not have to use main kitchen for serving foods
Why not bury the pit smoker to hide its ugliness. Is it still usable? then you would have a real 'pit smoker'. and save the above ground smoker! At first I thought it was an outdoor pizza oven and thought that would be nice to have too. .Make it to look like the big smoker's lil brother!
16:44 you really need to do some erosion control on that Berm if you want the good soil to stick and grow grass. Get some jute net and some wattles. Put that out and either seed it by hand, hydro seed it, or just throw some rye straw down that has seed in it and that would help even
I think Desperado Resort needs a desperado badass pool, like 10 times bigger than the one they have now. Any pool TH-camrs out there, this is a win-win!
Hey Matt, maybe you can try that grass seed stuff they spray on the side of the highways and interstates. It sticks really well and produces grass very quickly, like only a few days and it’s set and growing. Just a suggestion for you guys. Hope y’all are doing well! Keep it up Matt you are an inspiration to many!
I love that you still talk about Mar. I totally understand yall family decisions to have your family exit vidoes. Safety is number 1 but it's nice to hear about them from time to time. Love you all.
Concrete doesn't dry, it cures. It's an exothermic (heat generating) chemical reaction. Excess moisture is good for concrete. Keeping the surface wet during the curing process results in harder concrete.
I really really hope that Matt just chooses the cheapest labor every time he needs construction done because I almost never see white construction workers on his property and it’s quite concerning….
Matt, you seem to embrace grandiose ideas so here's a thought. You have a LOT of land. How about a private grass or gravel runway for well healed clients?
we should all care cuz we r supporting you because u care. plus i work in construction and its fun to watch how ppl build different in different areas.
Matt get a functioning Campground working along the river. Maybe get some Kayaks to rent out. Maybe make a Bathroom shower Building. That drain hole could be filling up your caves.
The key to get the concrete to set up faster is a product called high early (typically see 1-2% as an additive) Also, the slump of the concrete that was placed looked a little soupy. Decrease the slump to a 6-7 and utilize a concrete vibrator in the deep strap beam sections and you’ll be good to go! FYI using hydro seed with RYE to spray slops of topsoil at the range!
It would be cool to see what the landscaping youtubers like SB mowing could do in that event space! Maybe send them an invite just to see what happens 😀
if you put an aluminium pipe on the range banner, you can easily hook it up, take it off, and roll it up if you want to change banners. you could even make clamps on the telephone poles to easy connect
Matt..the Pavillion area is fantastic..I didn't realize it existed until now. Such an easy project..and would be the visual you use to confirm that your headed forward! Think of the cook offs or community dinners that could be held..or movie nite under the texas stars with a giant blowup outdoor screens...very cool. The administration building is looking breezy but good. I do have to state the obvious, the drainage tunnel that opened up right next to it is a bit concerning. You can always back the concrete truck up and fill it up..OOOOOOR you can dig it out and make your own "Matt-Cave", with your own Matt signal...EPIC, right?! Think about it. Keep up the momentum your getting there. We all have faith that you can get this done.
12:15 That would be a great place for a band to set up for some concerts. Imagine evenings in the month of December with a 'Christmas Concert at the Desperado Resort' (it's Texas it ain't that cold yet) with the outdoor fireplace going, brisket coming off the pit, people eating in the pavilion while others sit listening to the band or dancing. Garland decorations on the out buildings, hot chocolate, marshmallow roasting (love me a perfectly caramelized marshmallow). That is a great little venue within a bigger venue! Toss this idea at Mere and see if it would meet corporate approval.
That hang out area… first thing that came to mind was a camping area for Boy Scouts. If I camped there growing up, that would have been amazing. Camping and doing rifle, pistol, or archery merit badges with the troop. I know there’s a ton of troops around there.
You have come such a long way since you bought this. You are giving new life to a beautiful place and sharing it with the people. How cool. Great job! Have a great day.
Matt I have a recommendation for the grass out on the range something that normally works really well is throwing straw on the entire thing then seeding it cause the straw helps the seed retain moisture
To get seed to grow on the berm you may need to use excelsior mat or hydroseed it. Hydroseeding would probably be the best way to go. Of course it's more expensive.
You could do the pool sooner than later so that you have it during the summer for a good swim after a days work. Also nice attraction for family picnics and reunions. How many family reunion venues have a pool?

19:49 NEW CAVE?... MATT!... THE ALL AREA IS A CAVE LABIRYNTH...! YOU NEED TO BRING SPECIALISTS WITH EQUIPMENT TO MAP THE UNDERGROUND CAVE SYSTEM TO SEE IF IT'S WORTH OPENING UP THE MAZE ...!
idk if the pavilion is a great idea to start on. The other thing was smart to get taken care of fast, but, nobody is going to be coming having a wedding or reunion with construction in the background
i think the big benefit will be having a gathering area for people doing range events instead of just being stuck out in a treeless field around the range. that being said you damn will know there's at least a half dozen people just on this channel waiting to have their wedding there and that's enough to cover the costs of repairing it.
CURING CONCREET TAKES TIME!...we never rush it... we even water it to slow the curing process... curing generates heat, and we need to slow the process down to avoid cracks... ask your people, they know!...
Matt I would recommend putting ivy, packasandra not sure of the spelling of that one, or creeping juniper, weeds and trees will grow in the grass a ground cover choke out other plants and you don't have to mow
I've seen sloped dirt used around shopping malls and they place a fabric on the dirt with wire pegs before adding topsoil and mulch for grass. You should at least lay down some mulch, and dead leaves if you have any, to prevent soil erosion as the rain impacts those harder objects. Plus it's Texas, that mulch is going to be needed for soil moisture.
The concrete slump should be 5 to 6. Less water makes the concrete stiff and harder to work! That slab was soup. If you get cracking in the slab, that's why.

@@maxsmommy1500not for the brand new slab😂😂
@@Osamabintardin very true
We replaced the old wooden docks at Boot Key Marina with concrete docks and had to pump concrete hundreds of feet.
That sometimes causes it to harden up while it's in the pipes and hoses. You can imagine how much fun that is.
We appreciate your journey, thanks for taking us along! ❤
Seeing Matt being baby faced with a buzz cut in their first house. All the way up to this moment. He's doing amazing things.
Patience is definitely a virtue in the concrete world, the longer the moisture is in the concrete the harder it sets
Put that out and either seed it by hand, hydro seed it, or just throw some rye straw down that has seed in it and that would help even
So proud of ya'll. You're doing it! You got this!
I think Desperado Resort needs a desperado badass pool, like 10 times bigger than the one they have now. Any pool TH-camrs out there, this is a win-win!
Renovating the area surrounding the abandoned cave. We all know the cave is most important.
Block house and spiral staircase. Solar powered cannabis grow room.....
Spray on seed is available for sloped areas. It includes growth medium that helps it stick and root faster.
Matt, you should put the tile mural from the abandoned mansion somewhere on the resort.
Concrete does not DRY, it cures. The temperature outside has more to do with the time it takes than anything else.
Concrete curing is the process of drying and hardening concrete to prevent it from drying out too quickly. Concrete DOES DRY.
@@kountrygunz2032 actually concrete never "dries" there will always be moisture in it.
@@ChrisWijtmans but it still dries
Use straw mats on the burm, it'll help with erosion & protect your grass seed until it finally takes root.
Niccce. Two days in a row.

Plant 6 foot trees all along the top of the birm, the roots will spread out and hold the dirt in place
we should all care cuz we r supporting you because u care. plus i work in construction and its fun to watch how ppl build different in different areas.
From chaos comes order
Only when there is intelligent design. 😉
Matt get a functioning Campground working along the river. Maybe get some Kayaks to rent out. Maybe make a Bathroom shower Building. That drain hole could be filling up your caves.
On a positive note, longer cure time = stronger concrete.
That was some super wet looking concrete, but thankfully it did cure. Crazy you found a new cave!
Matt I'm so proud of you, we bought a camper! See y'all soon.
We are planning an event with DR. Hopefully you can join us!
We love our guns and 2 toy aussies! We had a condo on the Comal in early 2000, can't wait to head your way!
if you put an aluminium pipe on the range banner, you can easily hook it up, take it off, and roll it up if you want to change banners. you could even make clamps on the telephone poles to easy connect
Renovation and car stuff are like a breath of fresh air after all that cave hoopla
I’m excited to see how the first amenity on the resort turns out
12:15 That would be a great place for a band to set up for some concerts.
It ain't ever cold in Texas. LOL
Hi Matt keep up the awesome videos. You got this!!!
Shotgun shells loaded with grass seed, you’re welcome ☺️
Dont forget thd wildflowers in tbere too...support your local pollinators!
That hang out area… first thing that came to mind was a camping area for Boy Scouts. If I camped there growing up, that would have been amazing. Camping and doing rifle, pistol, or archery merit badges with the troop. I know there’s a ton of troops around there.
Notification squad! Demo Squad!
You have come such a long way since you bought this. You are giving new life to a beautiful place and sharing it with the people. How cool. Great job! Have a great day.
"It's gonna be very cheap" Famous last words.
Matt I have a recommendation for the grass out on the range something that normally works really well is throwing straw on the entire thing then seeding it cause the straw helps the seed retain moisture
I'd buy a, "Don't Tell Mer," t-shirt in a NY minute.
To get seed to grow on the berm you may need to use excelsior mat or hydroseed it. Hydroseeding would probably be the best way to go. Of course it's more expensive.
Open the pool and pavilion and rent them out for the summer.
You should try crownvetch for the shooting range hill. It is used on highways to cover steep sides along the highways, helps hold the soil.
If only the government knew how to build back better like Matt!
You could do the pool sooner than later so that you have it during the summer for a good swim after a days work. Also nice attraction for family picnics and reunions. How many family reunion venues have a pool?
I also think you should utilize the already built giant fireplace by adding a height adjustable and removeable cast iron grill grate, it looks like it would be awesome for large barbecue events. 👍
I love that! Could hang a giant kettle and have a chili party too! 😮
I’m glad you put the altro back in Matt everytime I watched a video and it didn’t play it would just remind me of the whole negative situation with crappy people that caused a big part of the channel to go away
19:49 NEW CAVE?... MATT!... THE ALL AREA IS A CAVE LABIRYNTH...! YOU NEED TO BRING SPECIALISTS WITH EQUIPMENT TO MAP THE UNDERGROUND CAVE SYSTEM TO SEE IF IT'S WORTH OPENING UP THE MAZE ...!
New life goal: to visit this ranch at some point in my life.
idk if the pavilion is a great idea to start on.
Look the other way....out over the river. Unlandscaped, meh, but once landscaped and fixed...very nice indeed.
We would!! 🥰
Hoping you and your family are staying safe in the horrible weather.
CURING CONCREET TAKES TIME!...we never rush it... we even water it to slow the curing process... curing generates heat, and we need to slow the process down to avoid cracks... ask your people, they know!...
Just keep the faith, just one day, one project at a time. Can't wait to see how it turns so we can visit!!❤
I’ve been so excited for this huge leap forward for you and the crew! So happy for you all!!
It's so cool that you're able to see the light at the end of the tunnel. And it's looking bright, my friend. Take a breath. You got this
Those wildflowers are so beautiful if you had weddings there it would be so nice for photos ❤
That corner of the wall by the big ireplace has a magnificent view! I can imagine that as a beautiful place for a wedding.
You are an inspiration Matt!! Thanks for sharing your process and your dreams with us!!
You should look into pellets wood smoker I have one and love it. You can get apple flavored pellets or any kind of. It tastes way better than propane
wind dries things faster than sun.....for the shooting range banks...wild flower seed along with a tough running warm season grass like Kikuyu
