    17:15. CORRECTION! The 2012 Porsche Cayman S has 4 piston brakes in the front, NOT 6 piston.

    Before changing out the entire shifter you might want to try WEVO Semisolid mounts between the rear subframe and the transaxle brackets; the shifting will change. If that is not enough for you, get the (orange) Function 1st poly urethane mount infill for the front of the engine. Still want a different shifter? install the Numeric unit. I've owned a 2010 Cayman S since October 2009 and have done quite a few mods and you've got a nice list going.

    • @DC5Brandon
      @DC5Brandon  ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow. Thanks for the tip. I was nitpicking about the shifter. I really do like it, it's just a little stiffer than expected on cold mornings. But I'll definitely make a note of your suggestion. Thanks!

    Quick note on why your Honda shifter might feel better: these 996, 986, 997, and 987 cars all use plastic shift bushings. Its fairly easy to swap them out for metal bearings/bushings, or swap the whole assembly out for a shifter from a GT3 that uses metal parts from the get-go. That improved my 996 vastly.

    • @DC5Brandon
      @DC5Brandon  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're right. I'm all too familiar with the shift cables of the 987 after my incident. The shift feel is really not that bad except for if being excessively difficult to shift when cold. I've been eying new shift cables and shifter for a few years. I may do the conversion next year.

    • @henryatkinson1479
      @henryatkinson1479 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DC5Brandon Stiff shifting when cold is something my 996 has as well. I've read its just the way these gearboxes are. New cables certainly wouldn't hurt. I'm going to be rebuilding my transmission soon (2nd gear synchro is dying a slow death), so I'll probably do it then.

    Good overview of a great car, thank you! I did smile when you discussed the shifter push pull cables. I too was completely unaware this was a common failure until mine went in 3rd gear on the motorway in Switzerland. Luckily I was stuck in 3rd and managed to limp home without stopping, and as this was in my 1st week of ownership, the dealer replaced the cables FOC with the ‘new’ Porsche design.
    After a few months of driving on the new shift cables I noticed a progressive stiffness during changes, particularly on cold start up. I suspected cable stretch, so purchased the Porsche ‘special’ plastic green tool for a couple of Swiss Francs, and reset and balanced the cables. Access is easy and was done in 30 mins. Afterwards shifting hot or cold was silky smooth, so if you’re experiencing these symptoms, then highly likely the cables need rebalancing.
    Other than this failure my 987.2 has run fault free for 7 years with scheduled Porsche servicing. Absolutely wonderful car as a daily driver and serious fun up in the Swiss mountain passes without the running costs of a 911 and with the engine in the RIGHT place 😁 In country lanes the Cayman 987.2 is a 911 killer much to the dismay of their owners 😜

    • @DC5Brandon
      @DC5Brandon  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! I'll take you advice and upgrade the cables and bracket eventually. I wanted to let potential owners know about the cables, so they can replace them and avoid what happened to you. Scarry! Another commentator thought I was giving the Cayman bad review. On the contrary, I love this car as you do. Also, I'm jealous you get to drive your Cayman in Switzerland. My mother visited recently and thought is was very beautiful.

    • @Pete1390SDR
      @Pete1390SDR 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I thought your review was extremely good, very fair, and comprehensive… great job!
      Yes that cable, if it’s still the Porsche original, has a design fault that Porsche recognised and corrected as a spare part for those 987’s needing a change. My dealer replaced free, thankfully, but I understand it’s quite a lengthy job, so might be expensive in terms of Labour hours?
      I lived in Switzerland for 14 years… their roads, even minor ones up in the hills are excellent for bikes and cars, and the scenery is stunning. Perfect habitat for nimble sports bikes and the Cayman which is a much overlooked outstanding car. Its advantages over the 911… weight and engine position. On the edge it dances under you with absolute predictability, and on smaller roads I found it more agile than 911’s. Keeping engine revs in the sweet spot you can power on early and accelerate hard off apexes. It’s supremely balanced and hydraulic steering close to perfection. Porsche’s best kept secret 😁

    Nice video, great job. I recently picked up a 987.2 pdk boxster and drove over 1300 miles over 3 days in the pacific nw on the way home. The car was a beast, handled liked on rails over light snow, 50+ mph wind gusts, and heavy rain throughout. It's def. not as comfortable as a 981/991 (also owns a 991.1) but it's wasn't too bad as I averaged over 300+ miles daily. Too me, 987s are more raw and analog. I just love that, plus I didn't want another car with the same driving dynamics similar to my 991, which is the same model generation as the 981. The car really shines when RPM exceeds 5k. Have fun!!

      Glad you liked the video! I will always have eternal love for a manual, but Porsche gave me a 718 base PDK Boxster as a loaner years ago, and I really loved the PDK. I would love a PDK Boxster in the stable as well.

      Your welcome. Some viewers have pointed out the price for replacing the TPM sensors was too high. They're somewhat correct. I was replacing brake pads at the time too, so the labor estimate I quoted in the video may have included both of these jobs. These sensors can be cheaper depending on where you buy them and although they can be swapped easily yourself, the labor is not that much. Also, as I said in the video, your estimate may be different based on which shop does your repairs.

    Loved the video! I picked up a 2011 Cayman S also in 2017. I just passed 40k this past summer so that service will greet me when I take it out of storage this spring. The one thing I noticed is that you should have an ipod hook up under the arm rest. I think they added them in 2011, but I have a cable plugged in there with an old apple dock connector. I put a dock to lightning adapter on it, an then got a lightning extension cable so I can plug in my phone and keep it in the nook under the climate controls. Looking forward to seeing how the rest of your mods go.

    • @DC5Brandon
      @DC5Brandon  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes! I always just plugged in a USB drive with MP3s under the arm rest. I actually point out the iPod arm rest dock in some footage I took last year where I show most of the Cayman's quirks and features (although I since replaced the radio). That vid should be posted in the next few weeks. I'm actually a few months behind releasing content, so the mods have already been installed. That content is coming soon too. Good luck with your 987.2!

    I'm only 10 mins in and I think based on all your 'complaints' on the Cayman you should have just tracked out your RSX. You basically got a low optioned Cayman with no PSE and no PSAM, and basic seats. Many of your initial compliments would be remedied if you had those options - sound, handling, and comfort of your back. FYI you need an PSE or aftermarket exhaust to really compliment the flat-6 of the 987.2. Ok I went forward to your mod section, and see you got the fab speed exhaust. Good job. I just don't think the Cayman was for you. Maybe the new Acura Integra will fit your bill?

    Great video! My family babies manuals so we hit 150k miles before having clutch issues. Is it different with a high-revving sports car?

    • @DC5Brandon
      @DC5Brandon  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question. Maybe. I just recently started to heel-toe, but I don't double-clutch either. 60K - 70K miles is what I read online and I believe it's the same average for my other high-revving car, the RSX. Granted, I don't rev either to the limit everyday, but both are occasionally revved out on a track, autocross, or street. I also wonder if the flywheel has anything to do with it. The Cayman's is legendary at approx. 32 lbs for a dual-mass flywheel and the stock RSX is 16 lbs, albeit with much less power.

    Got a stop you at IMS bearing on 987.1. If you watched the PCA extensive video on by ? Engineering. The 987.1 received the 3rd generation of the IMS bearing. This bearing is sealed and because of the larger diameter, it's located inside of the shaft. As opposed to front end like previous generations. If you want to change IMS bearing that's inside, you'd have to dismantle the engine. ie. engine rebuild. Basically, Porsche has designed IMS to be permanent and do not touch. The failure rate is > 1% so you'd pretty well have to win the lottery and you can therefore go ahead with dismantling/rebuild your blown engine. I would say, owners of 987.1 should focus their attention on bore scoring. Using less to no ethanol fuel with high detergents, consistent oil change and no excessive idling are some of the things you should do to prevent it. Also, make sure you're car is warmed up before you throttle it to red line.

    • @DC5Brandon
      @DC5Brandon  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You've got some good info there. Bore scoring is an issue for some of these cars, but I've not done the research on how or why. I don't remember what I said about IMS in this vid, since I covered the same topic extensively in another similar 987 vid. The source I read indicated only certain versions of the engine were susceptible to a total engine rebuild while others just required a retrofit. My source may be wrong, but it's worth noting for the record.

    • @josephlim8941
      @josephlim8941 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DC5Brandon All 986 engines received the first two generations and maybe retrofitted. Porsche made the switch to 3rd generation irreplaceable IMS late 2005. If the engine is blown, then it’s too late to do retrofit and will need engine rebuild.

      987.2 Caymans don't have sport modes other than PASM which is mostly suspension. Although I have heard other owners upgrading the cooling, I never had to. Later models may have those issues, but I focused more on the specs than the ownership issues of the later models.

    Ok review although I think the expectations of what Porsche provides for the money are misconstrued. It's a Porsche not a Honda. It's a performance car not an appliance. There will be quirks and compromises to drive and maintain this car just like any other. The magic is in the handling which is easy to understand once you crawl under it and marvel at the design and technology. I'm not sure what the failure was with the shifter. I do know from my experience and online content that the forward gears shift cable fails at the swage at the transmission connection. it is easily remedied by installing Numeric Racing replacement cables. My car has the Porsche short shift mechanism and with the Numerics the shifting is like a bolt action. I'm also curious regarding the TPMS. I purchased HUF sensors from Amazon and had them installed at the dealership. Not a big deal. My original sensors lasted 8 years and the PPI should have provided a system report indicating the estimated remaining battery life. The Sport seats are excellent and although they lack the lumbar adjustment I find them to be very comfortable and have made a 400 mile trip without any trouble. My service history includes regular oil changes using Mobil 1, brake pads and rotors, engine and pollen filters, coil packs and plugs, the shift cables and the thermostat under CPO warranty. The car is remarkable for it's daily use and performance at an affordable price point.

    • @DC5Brandon
      @DC5Brandon  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Even though I "reviewed" my experiences, I don't believe I was giving a subjective review. If I remember this vid correctly, I thought the language I used was quite favorable in the beginning, although listing my troubles with the car may have seemed I was being negative. Everything you said is true and I don't think that contradicts anything I said in the vid. I did say "your results may vary" when using the seats. The cost of my TPS may have been exaggerated, since I was also replacing brake pads and flushing brake fluid, so most of that estimate was for labor - other viewers have also pointed that I paid too much tor TPS replacement. I did mention my mechanic got the cheaper ones like yours. Regardless, my cost for only a TPS replacement estimate was incorrect, since other work was performed at the time. If there's any message I want to convey to the viewers is that maintenance will cost more than a Honda or simiar car, but just because it's a Porsche, doesn't mean it's better than a Honda. It has it's own set of problems and quirks as you say and I want to relay that message. I was unaware the shifter cable bracket was a commom point of failure and I hope this informs other potential/current owners, so they can replace the part before it fails. I did mention one of the solutions was getting aftermarket cables like yours. The handling is quite impressive as you say, but why Porsche didn't use a more superior double wishbone in the front is perplexing. Other companies do this to save production costs, which is why I think they decided to use an inferior shift bracket on the transmission. That being said, I LOVE this car and have many more videos on my channel about it. I didn't buy this car on a whim. I specifically sought out this make, model, generation, facelift, and with the right options. I wouldn't sell it for x2 what I paid for it. I love Porsche's as much as I love old Honda's 😁
