  • in this video we run through final tuning stages of our 2.3 pinto, we run it on 45 does with huge 40mm chokes, 48 does with even bigger 42mm chokes and finally fuel injection and make some pretty decent power figures along the way

    What a banshee on the 48's, still climbing at around 8k. Superb engine build, I'll be honest in I didn't know these could be pushed this far, even in a race build. Almost brought a tear to my eye hearing her just want to pull on.
    Ok, quick edit. I've seen the next pull but still beyond impressed with the engines desire to pull on, outstanding. 230hp and 190lb man, a cossie was 202 hp/lb iirc with a turbo. Mental.

    Helpful info on the choke increase without needing the jet change. Its probably unlikely on the kart, but nice to know its a possible situation.

    • @PenguinMotors
      @PenguinMotors  ปีที่แล้ว

      The I did change the air and emulsion tube, so that could be part of it, but I suspect them main reasons are that the 40mm chokes were too big to function properly on the 45mm carbs, whilst on the 48s with the straighter intake manifold considerably more air passes through the carbs

    Quick question I see a lot of Picture's of Webber Carburetors where the Trumpets have no Filters fitted as is the case on this One,doesn't this allow dirt and dust enter the Carburetors?and cause blockages to the Jets.

    • @PenguinMotors
      @PenguinMotors  หลายเดือนก่อน

      There an extremely small chance of that, 99.9 % of fuel jet blockages will be via fuel contamination. Even then as the jets are upside down with a gap under them it’s rare for anything in the fuel to find its way into a jet.Assuming you have the screw on jet covers fitted ( which I don’t bother with for dyno use) the only way airs could get blocked is if something finds its way through the hole next to the intake through the internal passages and up past the jet assemblies then turns 180 degrees to go down a jet holder. Much more likely anything going through the hole would simply end up in the bottom of the float bowl. In short you’re way more likely to end up with foreign material causing actual engine damage than blocking carbs

    man... I had a 90's Sunbird boat with the 2.3 OMC. it was rated at 128 hp due to no emission controls. it ran great but man if it had some of these modifications it'd be scary on the water. I could only get it to rev to 4800. I imagine a hot cam and better carb would've woke it up. 160 hp sounds very doable ;)

    I hear ya on the intake length. So what total induction length did you end up with? The math suggests 13,5-14" but it would be interesting to hear what the engine liked IRL.
    Did you play with the header to see if a different layout would make a difference?
    Is this engine allowed to run an open header, or is there are noise regulation involved ? (I expect there is)
    As a note to find even more usable power. A couple of Swedish tuners are pushing 250 hp out of the Pinto for track race engines, so there is something to be improved on. Those engines are lots of £££, Cam is a result of numerous attempts, heads are a work of art, but its possible.

    • @PenguinMotors
      @PenguinMotors  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Inlet length from head face to outer end of ram pipe was about 10.5 inches which is less than they normally like. Didn’t try open header as car cannot run like that. There is always something more to be had, this engine is conventional in every sense, so I’m sure more could be found, in fact we would have had more power if we were not in a heatwave when it was dyno tested, or could run better fuel to run higher compression

    • @torbenalstrup3902
      @torbenalstrup3902 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PenguinMotors So that´s something like 12,5" from valve to ram pipe opening. - Yes, its not "long" for sure, but not too far from the math either. OK on the other stuff. There are almost always limitations.
