The "polyphonic singing" I think was a misunderstanding and it just got spread around. In her performance of "Wicked Game" on this same show, the backing track has some vocals which sound like Diana's voice, and if you listen, it kind of sounds like she is singing multiple notes simultaneously. Also, concerning her dark tone, The Fairy Voice Mother pointed out "She has a MASSIVE larynx"!

I’ve seen lots of fans say she sings polyphonically, but she has never said this (to my knowledge), and I’ve never seen a vocal professional say that she does it.

I think the polyphonic label occurred, much like the dramatic contralto designation, because we lay people are not operatic nerds or music experts, so it only takes a couple of reactors to say and its cannon and its all we have to describe Diana's stupefying amounts of resonance. Like anything that's new or different, people apply labels that may serve a short term purpose but damage or hinder long term as they display inaccuracy, as long as Diana gets to move forward in a positive way, I'm not worried about how anyone describes her voice :)

She did an amazing sort of polyphonic sort ot effect on a slide in Can't Help Falling In Love and rather than grant it to her you slandered her saying it was a trick done in post production.
I'm leaning more towards it being deliberate use of reverb now that one commenter pointed it out honestly. Wasn't trying to rip her to shreds by any stretch, just commenting with the knowledge that I had at the time, and I'm always learning and refining my opinions anyway. Having seen spectrum analyses of her voice patterns when singing what many consider polyphony it is clear that she just has access to insane amounts of harmonics that she can switch in and out on demand through her command of her entire vocal apparatus. Most people have interpreted this as polyphony but, clearly, it isn't. What it is is the normal overtones present in any voice are exaggerated by Diana to such a degree that they compete with the fundamental note. So, not normal but not polyphony as there aren't two distinct fundamental notes. Does it matter? Does it degrade my enjoyment of her performances? No, of course not. Working this out for myself, through my own efforts and watching professional analyses such as yours, has helped me understand better what I am seeing and hearing and this ultimately adds to my overall enjoyment of this performance, any performance really. She has been singing for many years and has obviously devoted herself to this and this is why we see such professionalism at this age, and earlier for that matter.

The background of the song is essential to know. The title of the song is "Ornery (or "Fastidious" or "Finicky") Horses". The song has nothing to do with horses in reality - the horses are being used as a metaphor for life. (I am not a professional but I have compiled information found on Diana's official website, in interviews and in reactions from singers and musicians)
Your astonishment is not exceptional! Diana is an unique contralto (dramatic contralto) her comfort range is C3-C6 but in constant evolution. Diana uses many vocal techniques rarely used in pop music (like overtones, yodel, and some from lyric chant....). The one that seems to amaze people the most is multitonal (polyphonic) voice. The root notes are enriched with powerful harmonics which can give the impression that there are several overlapping voices or an artificial effect which gives this result.
This technique is used in Slavic folk music, like Bulgarian vocal groups or artists like Pelageya (th-cam.com/users/OlegSemyonov73videos), the Russian folk diva. I cannot tell you exactly how these artists achieve this result, I was just told that it is linked to the simultaneous use of the different resonators of the human body and that such a mastery of the voice and of the breath with such a fluidity requires years of work, Diana has been singing on stage and has been taking singing and performing arts lessons since the age of 6!
She has become famous in the broadcast "You're Great!" ("You are Super"), a song contest reserved for children who have had a difficult start in life. This is the case of Diana who was mistreated and ended up in an orphanage at 3 years old.

Yes, you will hear/read a myth or two about Diana's voice (as if it wasn't unique enough as it is). Anyway, thanks for a nice reaction video.
The "polyphonic singing" I think was a misunderstanding and it just got spread around. In her performance of "Wicked Game" on this same show, the backing track has some vocals which sound like Diana's voice, and if you listen, it kind of sounds like she is singing multiple notes simultaneously. Also, concerning her dark tone, The Fairy Voice Mother pointed out "She has a MASSIVE larynx"!

Diana has a lot of very prominent overtones in her voice. I’ve seen lots of fans say she sings polyphonically, but she has never said this (to my knowledge), and I’ve never seen a vocal professional say that she does it.
She is a total stage animal. To be able to repeat that yodel, consistently, whilst also being lifted into the boat.

This is Diana’s “Non Je Ne Regrette Rien" (No I don't regret anything) and "Jodel Time" at age 13 at the local karaoke night. I think the polyphonic label occurred, much like the dramatic contralto designation, because we lay people are not operatic nerds or music experts, so it only takes a couple of reactors to say and its cannon and its all we have to describe Diana's stupefying amounts of resonance. Like anything that's new or different, people apply labels that may serve a short term purpose but damage or hinder long term as they display inaccuracy, as long as Diana gets to move forward in a positive way, I'm not worried about how anyone describes her voice :)

I think her polyphonic is not controlled, I think caused by her vocal cord structure. Seems to appear at a certain active range.

you might not be a good metal singer, which is not bad, or you are humble, which is the best, but your analysis are pretty damn good, i can give you that. that yodeling finesse that you can hear in diana's singing is, as a lot other ornaments in her technique, are from traditional slavic singing. i suggest you to explore it, it might even help you craft your own singing style and expression. best regards my man, cheers!

She did an amazing sort of polyphonic sort ot effect on a slide in Can't Help Falling In Love and rather than grant it to her you slandered her saying it was a trick done in post production.
I'm leaning more towards it being deliberate use of reverb now that one commenter pointed it out honestly. Wasn't trying to rip her to shreds by any stretch, just commenting with the knowledge that I had at the time, and I'm always learning and refining my opinions anyway.

Thanks for your reaction and analysis of Реченька (Re-CHEN-ka) by Diana Ankudinova (if you're interested it's: dee/ānā ăn/koo/DĬN/uh-vah). Regarding polyphony, I'm on your side in this. My take is that Diana has high levels, alright crazy levels, of enhanced harmonics. Having seen spectrum analyses of her voice patterns when singing what many consider polyphony it is clear that she just has access to insane amounts of harmonics that she can switch in and out on demand through her command of her entire vocal apparatus. Most people have interpreted this as polyphony but, clearly, it isn't. What it is is the normal overtones present in any voice are exaggerated by Diana to such a degree that they compete with the fundamental note. So, not normal but not polyphony as there aren't two distinct fundamental notes. Does it matter? Does it degrade my enjoyment of her performances? No, of course not. Working this out for myself, through my own efforts and watching professional analyses such as yours, has helped me understand better what I am seeing and hearing and this ultimately adds to my overall enjoyment of this performance, any performance really. She has been singing for many years and has obviously devoted herself to this and this is why we see such professionalism at this age, and earlier for that matter.
