I believe she was 15 here. I think she is now 19 so she has another 10 years or so before her voice is considered mature. As a true dramatic polyphonic contralto, I might have wished she had chosen to pursue a career in Opera, but she has said she has no desire to go in that direction. She doesn't sing a song, she performs it with her whole being.

This is a compilation of several folk songs. In the initial and final parts it is sung about the river. Here you can feel the smooth flow of the river and the echo spreading along the night forest shore. I’ll never forget hearing this for the first time. Diana Ankudinova at only 14 years old completely changed music for me with Rechenka. I’ve probably listened to it 50 times and still get chills. To me, this is musical perfection. Diana’s Rechenka has its own place in music history.
The song "Rechenka" (affectionate from the word "river") is a Russian folk ritual wedding song. There is a version that this song appeared before Christianity, and since early Christianity and paganism were closely intertwined, there are many versions of this song. It tells how an orphan girl comes to the river and prays to the spirits of nature. The song is about how my mother, father and brothers were killed by enemies, there is no one to take care of her. The river in Ancient Russia was considered the border between the world of the living and the dead. You hear an ominous whisper, it's the spirit of her late mother responding to the girl's crying. There are about 30 variants of this song, but the content of each of the variants is based on the sad appeals of the orphan bride to her deceased parents, asking them for "blessings" and help for marriage, for family, to strangers. There are other versions of this song, where the heroine appeals to her brothers and even to her parents with a call to return to earth in the form of a bird to her native home. At the end of the song, the girl sails away to a strange tribe, to a strange family. The roots of the song go back to ancient Russia, it is a very, very ancient folk folklore.

It's an over 300 year old folk song about a Cossack warrior who dreams of his death in an imminent battle. On Diana's face you see sadness, anxiety and pain of the soul of the Cossack warrior. One would swear she borrowed that soul to perform the song.

I believe she was 15 here. I think she is now 19 so she has another 10 years or so before her voice is considered mature. As a true dramatic polyphonic contralto, I might have wished she had chosen to pursue a career in Opera, but she has said she has no desire to go in that direction. She doesn't sing a song, she performs it with her whole being.

This is a compilation of several folk songs. In the initial and final parts it is sung about the river. Here you can feel the smooth flow of the river and the echo spreading along the night forest shore. In the middle part, the heroine tells crying that she is an orphan and she will be married soon, but no one will bless her.
I’ll never forget hearing this for the first time. Diana Ankudinova at only 14 years old completely changed music for me with Rechenka. I’ve probably listened to it 50 times and still get chills. To me, this is musical perfection. Diana’s Rechenka has its own place in music history.
The song "Rechenka" (affectionate from the word "river") is a Russian folk ritual wedding song. There is a version that this song appeared before Christianity, and since early Christianity and paganism were closely intertwined, there are many versions of this song. It tells how an orphan girl comes to the river and prays to the spirits of nature. The song is about how my mother, father and brothers were killed by enemies, there is no one to take care of her. The river in Ancient Russia was considered the border between the world of the living and the dead. You hear an ominous whisper, it's the spirit of her late mother responding to the girl's crying.
There are about 30 variants of this song, but the content of each of the variants is based on the sad appeals of the orphan bride to her deceased parents, asking them for "blessings" and help for marriage, for family, to strangers.
There are other versions of this song, where the heroine appeals to her brothers and even to her parents with a call to return to earth in the form of a bird to her native home.
At the end of the song, the girl sails away to a strange tribe, to a strange family.
The roots of the song go back to ancient Russia, it is a very, very ancient folk folklore.
Haunting and riveting performance by Diana ! Her vocals are so unique and very grounded in Russian folklore ! She is able to convey her sorrows through her singing and movements ! Diana's timbre naturally is on the dark side and you are immediately drawn into her conflict ! Thank you Marisa as always for your wonderful commentary and your explanations were spot on ! Sadly we only get to see Diana on You Tube as she performs basically in Eastern Europe mainly Russia ! Also the song Silent Lucidity official music video 1991. The original lead vocalist Geoff Tate was one of the greatest male singers in rock/metal music. He is a natural baritone but has unbelievable tenor range. Please check it out.
