With all due respect of our current players. Some of the players we had under Rafa were among the best in the world in their positions. And some of them have moved on and achieved great things later in their careers. It's such a shame the club and Rafa's project was destroyed by those horrible people that came in 2007.
Rafa made his own mistakes too of course, particularly with Xabi, but having such a great player play for the club was an honour and a pleasure to watch.

2009 was a year of bloody heartbreak! Losing out to the mancs was hideous (but not before we'd stuck it to them 4-1 in their own back yard on March 14th!!!) Then losing Xabi Alonso in July, one of our best midfielders ever and a club legend, was purgatory...!!!

Alonso's biggest contribution to an already good squad was the settled 'shape' his inclusion brought, this was particularly evident during the season we came oh-so close. Now I can't name another Liverpool player, historically or currently who complimented those around him, so much so that individuals gel and partnerships are bonded. The squad aren't daft, they can feel the difference too - a self-belief and they were consistently superb week in-week out. Collectively the team with Alonso in WAS the difference. Everyone played 'better' when he played and Liverpool weren't the same if he didn't. He's a Liverpool Legend and he's been one hell of a Red.

I watched Alonso more than any other player when he used to play for Liverpool. Not only was he world class at his ball control and passing, he had very good awareness and positioning.
We had the best midfield pairing in Europe back then. Mascherano was a terrier with his running and tackling, while Alonso stifled opposition attacks and initiated many of Liverpool's with good decision making and by being in the right place. Alonso also took a lot of the midfield load to free up Gerrard to make more creative plays and score goals.
A Liverpool legend.
What a player Alonso was!! he will always be greatly respected by Liverpool fans (and he also played a part in demolishing the Gooners with Bayern last week ha ha!)
