It’s been 50 years since I’ve touched a Huey. And every time I hear one it all comes back. The Cobra was amazing. I remember the first time I saw one in person on a flight line. I went up to it and couldn’t believe how narrow it was. I mean tiny. But it was a beast. Two of the greatest helicopters that ever where
I went to basic in 83 and then to ft. Eustis for AIT on the Cobra. I remember during the first week, we watched a film about how the Army told Bell they wanted everything on the Huey but squeezed into an airframe no wider than 36 in! It sounded impossible at the time but they did it! On the downside, it made working on some stuff a total pain in the ass! Like putting safety wire back on the#2&3 bearing oil strainer! Worst task ever to try to do! Especially out in the field! After I got back from Korea my last assignment was as an instructor at the school teaching powertrain and Rotors to the new mechanics. It's funny...I forget what I had for dinner the day before done times but I can still tell you the torque on the pitch change rod retaining bolts on the Cobra: 1250 -1550 inch/lb I miss those aircraft! You could always hear them coming too! That low rumble that eventually turned into a loud chopping.
@@ColdWarAviator the Cobra was a bad ass for sure. When they came flying in look out. Last time I rode on a Huey was 1970, but you never forget the sound. Like you said, I can remember details about the inside of the Huey, the smell, the whinny start up like it was a hour ago. Ask me what I did last week? Lol. I gotta really think about that. Take care brother
Remember them both well, Texas Army National Guard unit I was with had the Huey and AH-1 S Mod 5.56 mini gun and 40 mm grenade chunker, F Model 20 mm, graduated to the AH-64 Apache. Got rid of the Hueys and got brand new Black Hawks.
I love both look at my description Cobra - Guided Missiles And Camera Can Shoot Raging Fire Machine Gun At The Side Or Behind Camera Has The Same Landing Pad On The Side Huey - One Little Machine Gun On One Side And a Long Machine Gun On The Other Side And With Only 8 Passengers Same Landing Pad With The Cobra
Fly that fuckin beast. My hat is off to those pilots who flew those fuckin UH-1H's. I know that all the guys on the ground (11-bravos) were glad to hear that wop wop
Run, Charly, run...😄 Great Helicopters. I'm from Germany, and here are the Huey's grounded. You only can see them in static Display. Only a few are still in service, but the end is near. So sad. I love the Huey.
The cobra is wow but that huey sound is known world wide i never even saw one up close but they must have been a welcome sight to troops waiting for pickup or evac
Sorry but other videos keep on saying that the huey was given up for something more reliable!?! How can a chopper thats been battle tested for 10 years+ and save so many souls from the jungle meat grinder ever possibly have a superior upgrade? UH-1 for life!

We had the honor of seeing these 2 pieces of history fly at the Olympic Airshow in Olympia, WA yesterday. Fantastic video!
Beautiful video. The sound of the Huey is forever.
Nothing sounds like an inbound huey. They have their own distinct sound.
…and when you were in a firefight, there was NOTHING better than that inbound sound.

The UH-1Y is the modern era new build of the icon....They call it the Venom, but its still a Huey.
I got that answer for you: politics 👈😒
@@angelisreal were are they because we barely saw them in Iraq and Afghanistan, Blackhawks is what all of the branches are using.
@@lcfflc3887 the USMC is the only branch that operates them.

honor and salute to americans militarys services...
both AH-1 Cobra and Bell UH-1 Huel Iroquois helicopter needs 4 blades on the top...
not 2 blades
UH-1Y has quad rotor rotor...USMC flies 'em!☝️😎
Hollywood uses the rotor sounds of a Huey on helos that don't sound like it in real life because the sound is so iconic.
And then when they do show a Huey, they use the sound from a Robinson. lol
