What people don’t know is this kind of storytelling/interviewing savvy is worth 10x more than any cinematography trick. I can teach anyone to put the lights in a good spot, but getting someone to open up on camera is genuinely tough.
Sometimes there comes a video around on TH-cam which might be more helpful than all the videos you saw the last couple of months. THIS one is definitely one of those videos. Thanks for sharing your professional insights. Much appreciated.
I've just decided to try my hand at filming a documentary solo for the first time, and your videos have been a huge help Mark! I was literally asking myself what kind of questions should I be asking in interviews, and lo and behold you gift a video the next day. Thanks for all that you do!
Thanks for the tips, I'll be using them this weekend on my first BIG commercial / documentary shoot! I'm too excited!!!! is that a thing? lol Nice Video Mark, as always!
G'day Mark I’ve encountered an issue with receiving the Question Template PDF and the Lighting Guide PDF. Despite signing up using different email addresses, I haven’t received them. Just letting you know
Really interesting. Would have been great for me to see this BEFORE I completed a 13,000km trek across Canada to do 14 interviews for an upcoming documentary, but great going forward, nonetheless! Hahahahhaa
Question. Since you are asking questions. Do you keep yourself in the Video as an off camera voice? Or so you cut from question to question trying to create a Story the person is telling? I am new to this and sorry for the stupid question.
You can, and it's a style. For some things it works, for others, not so much. A common technique to get around it is to prep the interviewee before you start the interview. Ask them to repeat the questions back to you, that you ask, in their own words, before answering. As an example from this video, if you ask: "How did that make you feel that day" The interviewee should respond with something like: "That day i felt like ...bla bla bla bla" That way the interviewee themselfs pushes the story forward. Hope it makes sense 👍
Yes that's how most of Mark's video are. Extremely generic information. Take a look at the first interview with those astera tubes and how cheap it feels. ChatGPT type of videos. And he is creating a new generation of generic "documentary" filmmakers who basically go and shoot portrait videos of some random people. "Be prepared!" , "Ask emotional questions!" .. Thanks man!
