    Was not disappointed :)

    I'm a 64-year-old man and, surprisingly, I found this video both entertaining and informative. And you say that you sewed and knitted all those pieces by hand?! Incredible!

  • @EngineeringKnits
    @EngineeringKnits  4 ปีที่แล้ว +166

    Edit: Hello and welcome everyone coming from Karolina's post - thank you for stopping by and I hope you enjoy! 😊I'm overwhelmed by the lovely response, thank you so much!
    I can finally wear my entire outfit all together! What do you all think?
    A few notes:
    - Lace-up shoes were available in the 1890s, and are likely also very popular, but I did find many examples of buttoned shoes as well!
    - I meant to say that 1890s corsets were split-busk! My corset has a busk, it just doesn't open at the front like most would have in 1890!
    (and I'm sure I made so many more mistakes - this is my first ever historical costume and I've learned so much already!!)

      I’m just so glad you found a project you could work so hard and do so much research on! Karolina Żebrowska recommended this video to me, and I hope more and more people come see this video, because it’s so respectable to see someone make a historical garment (and for the first time!) like this. I hope you keep doing this in the future, I love seeing this stuff.

      Yes, Karolina Żebrowska just posted the link. Hopefully many more of us will watch, comment, like & subscribe to show appreciation for your hours and hours of hard work.
      Is there a link for paterns in the description? I am interested making woolen ruffles, like your fascinator has.

    Lovely! I imagine there were a couple of ladies who loved knitting as much as you do, and would have worn this many knit layers! They probably weren't common, as you mentioned, but they had to exist! :)

  • @michellebyrom6551
    @michellebyrom6551 4 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    Directed here by Karolina. Beautiful work. Subscribed.
    I've been trying a mesh patterned 1940s vest. Pretty stitch of twisted rib on knit row and larger needle on purl. Lost at least 10 stitches over 10"/25cm of back piece pattern. The rib lines kept moving too. Turned it into a hot water bottle cover instead. Lol.
    That's why knitted stockings and combinations impress me. Lace I have to crochet to get right.

    I've been watching your videos for weeks now, originally looking for some knitting ideas and very quickly falling in love with vintage knitting. This is the first time I've watched you wear this whole ensemble, after seeing you slowly piece it together in previous videos. I know this about 2 years late but WOW it's so exciting to watch the final results of all your hard work. Mad respect!!

    1 year to sew/knit for 1 person only! How did women manage it, when they had an entire growing family to sew/knit for? No wonder people had only few garments, rather than today's FAST FASHION! I'm 68 and a sewer, the few garments I've managed to sew for myself, I love more than anything I buy! In fact I buy very few clothes..Knitting, crocheting are my upcoming hobby too! Mum sewed all our garmenst (4 of us in the 1960's)

    From reading through memoirs and reference books, hand knit undergarments were actually quite common. It was rare for a woman to be the only woman in the house, so she had sisters and daughters to help with large knitting projects, and even some boys were enlisted on rainy days. Some people would also take old hats, scarves, and gloves and weave them into these large garments to save on knitting time.

      I was acknowledging that different locations have radically different weather. Our "spring" is extra hot this year, trying to be summer already. I try to hide in the shade, grateful that it isn't also humid, or snowing instead. Still, new plants dehydrate so quickly that I really should consider a "watering" system. I hope that your winter is not too uncomfortable

    You did such a beautiful job! The pieces all look wonderful! You could probably actually wear the blue ensemble in summer if you just change the undergarments and accessories for summer ones, since wool is not only good for keeping you warm, but lightweight wool was used to keep you nice and cool in hot weather too. (The weight of the blue fabric looked quite light to me, but it's hard to tell on camera)

    I have >thoroughly< enjoyed watching this playlist and seeing your progress in sewing! Like you, I'm not an historical seamstress, although I do have moderate sewing experience. I am 10 different kinds of impressed that you tackled these sewing projects! You're my hero for the week! Your entire outfit is absolutely stunning! Also, like you, I knit...but I'm fairly certain you are light years ahead of me in that skill. ;-) I found a beautiful knit shawl around which I want to plan a Victorian or Edwardian outfit. You have bolstered my confidence in that idea greatly! I would also like to add another point. You say that you're not sure a lady of the Victorian Era would have owned quite that many hand knitted items. However, I would assume there were quite a few of the lower class ladies who would have had to knit their own pieces. While the middle or upper class could purchase those items...if a Lady of lower social status wished to be fashionable...AND warm...I bet she'd have been very industrious and set about making her own items: both knitting and sewing. Maybe that could be another project: to research how much the materials you used in the making of your ensemble would have cost in 1892. (like you need another project! lol ) I have download the 1892 Victorian Knitting Pattern book, as well, and I have 2 projects going now. Thank you for that resource! ...and yes, interpreting the instructions can be challenging. I find I usually just have to try it a few times before I can figure out what the author is getting at. Again, VERY good job on >everything< and thank you for your time and efforts in videoing and sharing. Great work all around!

    Beautiful work! I love seeing the whole ensemble. You'll have to tackle a corset pattern next. (I recommend Redthreaded as being very friendly for beginners.)

      Great suggestion! I am planning on doing a corset at some point, I've been eyeing their patterns!

    It’s funny, the other thing to think about is that without central heating, the difference between outside and inside temperatures would have been less, so people wouldn’t not easily overheat if they went inside to call!
