Super late to the party but pro-tip for anyone watching this years later: stainless steel welding rods make AMAZING blocking wires.
You can buy them by the pound. I think I got something like 30 wires for $15 a couple years ago.
They have to be stainless because you'll be wetting them when blocking.
When you get them, wipe them down REALLY WELL (make sure there's no oil or dust from manufacturing) and sand the ends a bit to make sure there are no burrs or snags.
I use 1 yard rods for blocking everything I make, lol.

Yes, you should make a corset cover. It is a very necessary garment. I would put in one more tuck, just to raise the hem up a little bit. It looks amazing! Well done. And don’t worry about it being heavy. That is very historically accurate.

A corset cover helps conceal the hard edge of the corset and keeps the bust looking like a uniboob the way the fashion demanded at that time, I would say do one with a knit lace trim because a fully knit one would be rather warm! I’d also say you might want to wait on adding a tuck until you finish your skirt so you know if you need to add only one or perhaps two. The length looks pretty good to me as most skirts of the time are almost brushing the floor, but then again the knit may stretch a bit. Are you thinking of adding some ribbon into the insertion lace? It would add a pop of color to the petticoat if you do! Happy knitting and enjoy your new craft room!

A Gypsy Circle I second your comment. The corset cover protects the corset but also ensures the lines of the bodice are soft. Highly recommend.

True in all points. Also, historically, no respectable lady would have worn their dress right over the corset without a corset cover - that's why there usually are quite a number of them in the underwear section of the old magazines.
And you get to do another one of those cute insertion laces with the blue ribbon :)
Also, I usually use the corset cover as a mock-up for my bodice pattern, so it's not all "wasted" effort ;)

A Gypsy Circle, you are a girl after my own heart. I was going to suggest the same things, both the corset cover and to wait on adding any tucks until she had the final skirt completed. Great minds think alike.

That petticoat is so lovely! It also looks like a good length to me. But maybe keep the more tucks in you mind after the walking skirt is done so that way you can make sure everything is the right length. I think a corset cover would be lovely and it helps with smoothing out the line of the corset and the torso. Plus it was another excuse to put more lace onto something lol.

Using tucks on a petticoat helped growing girls and young women whose families had tight budgets. Most families incomes were small and there were usually a lot of children to clothe. Good job with the knitted lace!

I love your outlook on mistakes! I just made my first pair of crochet mittens, and they came out somewhat misshapen on the fingers part. You're right though; it gives them that hand-crocheted look. :)

If you want to practice sewing straight lines you could take a piece of paper with straight lines and sew over them without a thread. I had to do that and it helped me a lot.

I do think a corset cover is important for the line. Mine is an old lady style nightgown from amazon that i cut off and added a drawstring to. But I think you need it to fill out that shape and hide the top corset edge.
    Your lace is beautiful!

As a beginner in historical sewing, I noticed, making a walking skirt, how athletic this sewing is carrying tons of fabric, moving it from iron to sewing machine. But results are beautifull

Knit picks offers some lace blocking wires that would go really well with your blocking combs. They will also help keep your edges straight. If you don’t want to buy theirs there are plenty of others on the market too. I saw some that are also curved memory wire once upon a time on Etsy... how I wish I had those. Also if you need more matts, go look for the Matt’s that go under weight lifting or exorcise machines or even garage tools . If you go to Walmart or Sams or Costco you can find them in multi color or black. Much less expensive than the ones listed as knitting blocking mats and they are basically the same thing. Really enjoying you channel.

You need to sew a corset cover that is something that all women wore to conceal and hide the corset to help give the proper Victorian silhouette. To short the petticoat you can sew another tuck in and then it will be the right length.

I don’t know why the algorithm decided to put your journey through this project into my feed four years too late, but I’m so glad it did 😊
You really did a wonderful job. I can’t wait to go find the other parts of this project.

Lovely work! I would definitely make a corset cover. It's important for achieving the correct sillouhette. Plus it's another great opportunity to add some hand knitted details.

Love the way the petticoat turned out! I personally think it would be a good idea to make a corset cover as well to help disguise the corset under the clothing. I've been enjoying following you around on this journey, especially since I crochet and have done some historical work myself from The Art of Crochet :3 Hope you're enjoying your new space!

Oh gosh that's so beautiful!!! I'd leave the petticoat for now, and please do a corset cover! Since it's a (much) smaller garment, you might find you have the time to do a fine knitted lace trim - esp if you sew the rest of it, since yes, it's probably supposed to be a very light garment.
I'm probably just obsessed with lace. I've just got into lace knitting and done a few fingering-weight lace sections and I'm desperate to start doing something finer.

Wow, (almost) 30 feet of lace! I think it’s very understandable that you went for a chunkier yarn, and honestly I actually like the thickness for a petticoat for a winter ensemble. If you make another petticoat then it might be worth going for a thinner yarn and trying out different lace patterns, but overall this is so beautiful!

This video is just the right thing to start into the christmas holidays :) I personally think, that making a corset cover would be a good addition to your project, since it hepls a great deal with achieving the overall silouette. Your idea to shorten the skirt by adding one or more tucks is brilliant. Good luck for your upcoming sewing and knitting journey!
The pettycoat turned out beautifully with the lace!

You make my nerdy little heart sing. 😍
A corset cover would be a very good idea. And I think you can get away with 1-2 additional tucks. I usually prefer my peticoats to fal around mid calf or just below. Any longer and they tend to be very visible under the skirt and impede walking.

It’s so beautiful!! Congratulations on many hours of work. I was inspired by you to try the stockings. I’m only about 8 inches into the first one. Already it feels like forever! But I do love the fact I can just watch a movie and knit without thinking too much. Keep up the good work!
