My daughter was also a freshman and had a similar experience with being recruited by a church. She gave them my number and they called relentlessly until I put a stop to it. Always trust your instincts . Well done

Glad you found yourself and went back to your spiritual roots. This happens when beginning college. This is a normal process,trying to find yourself. I went through the same thing many years ago.
